When did you start learning to play a musical instrument?I started playing at age 10 at school in Leeds, my family all played string instruments (I was the youngest) but I insisted on playing the trombone.

Who taught you how to play your instrument?I was taught by George Bradshaw, Head of Brass at Leeds Music Service. He was a former principal trombone at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and introduced me to the orchestral trombone repertoire.

If applicable where did you study Music?During my 6th form years I studied trombone at the junior department of the Royal College of Music with John Iveson and then when I was 18, I went to the Royal Academy of Music and studied trombone with Michael Hext and conducting with Colin Metters and Maurice Handford.

Which musical ensembles have you performed with?• While I was at school I played with the Leeds Youth

Orchestra, Yorkshire Schools Brass Band and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

• Professionally I have played mainly with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra but also on a freelance basis with many of the London based orchestras.

• Brass bands I have played with are Kirkintilloch, Marple, Yorkshire Imperial, plus lots of others.

What is your favourite food?Kum Po Chicken (hot Chinese chilli dish).

Who are your favourite bands or artists?• London Symphony Orchestra• Phillip Jones Brass Ensemble• Level 42• Jaqueline Dupre• BobbyMoore(definitelyanartist)

• What 3 things could you not live without?1. My bicycle (although I currently have 6, so it would be tricky

to choose)

2. My Trombone ( I have 11 trombones at the moment but that would be easy to choose, I’d take the 1957 Elkhart Conn 8H)

3. My family

What 3 CD’s or albums would you take to a desert island?1. Saint Saens Symphony No.3 (Organ Symphony)

2. Phillip Jones Brass Ensemble, “Easy Winners”

3. Maynard Fergusson, “A Message from Newport”

Favourite Holiday destination?Egypt (but not the beach resorts)

Favourite Concert venue?Royal Festival Hall, South Bank, London. I’ve been to see and played in some fantastic concerts there. It’s not so much the venue itself but the memories I have.

Tea or Coffee?Coffee,especiallyiffreshlyground(butnotStarbucks)

Interesting fact about yourself?1998, British Open Brass Solo Champion of Great Britain.

In April an African drummer called Moses visited Saddleworth School. My form was lucky enough to spend time learning how to play the African drums.

Percussion is a big part of African life. In the towns everyone can play, they are taught in school and by the community. They don’t use written music, instead they play from memory. Drumming plays an important part in ceremonies like funerals and they have an African drumming festival.

Moses demonstrated drum rhythms and African dancing. We wereshowndifferenttypesofdrumswhichincludedthedjembe.African Drums are often made of wood and are covered in animal skin, usually goat or cow hide. The drums are played with sticks or with your hands. We were told that the bigger the drum the lower the sound and the more tension in the drum skin the higher the sound.

I play the drum kit with my own band and with various brass bands and percussion groups. I do not think African drumming is verydifferentfromkitplaying, theyarebothbasedonthesamebasic beat. Kit Drumming is more of a solo experience but African drumming is more sociable.

I really enjoyed this experience and would love to do it again.

Woodwind Ensemble Primary Transition ConcertBy Lola Gladwin (7V)

The Woodwind Group is conducted by Mrs Pickett and includes flutes, clarinetsanddrumkit.Theaimoftheperformancewasto inspire and encourage younger children to take up a musical instrument. When we were there we played pieces for the school including: ‘I don’t want to miss a thing’, ‘Fame’, ‘Everything I do’ as well as ‘I wanna hold your hand” by The Beatles. Other pieces we played which the children seemed to especially enjoy were: ‘Someone Like You’ by Adele, ‘Wizard Wheezes’ (from Harry Potter and the Half-blood Prince) and two lively numbers called ‘Autumn Ballad’ and ‘Bouncing’.

In between the pieces Mrs Pickett talked to the school about the instrumentsinthegroupwhichwereflutesandclarinets.Shealso told the children about other woodwind instruments such as oboes, bassoons and saxophones. This concert was an enjoyable experience because we all enjoyed performing the pieces to the younger children and showing everyone the hard work that had gone into practising and perfecting the pieces.

On 6th July the Saddleworth School Woodwind Group went to perform at Knowsley Primary school.

Over a series of workshops the amazing dance students from the Northern Ballet School choreographed a dance with form to the chosen piece of music which involved every member. The dancers were enthusiastic, encouraging and very patient. The end result was spectacular!

Two brilliant musicians from the world famous Hallé Orchestra worked with each form to create their own version of the chosen piece of music. 7E worked with a cellist, Maya Kashif and percussion player, John Adendstern and 7T worked with a violinist, Catherine Landen and french horn player, Andy Maher. These musicians were very understanding of each and every students’ musical or non-musical abilities and ensured every person was part of the ensemble.

7T made Viking costumes out of pieces of material and they had card crowns which was very creative. Their dancing was outstanding and they musical skills were fantastic. I was really amazed by their confidencewhilstperforming.

7Ewereeitherpeasantsorsoldiersandtheymadetheiroutfitsfromfabric,paperandcard.Itwasveryeffective.Themusicthey created was of a really high standard and the way that they danced was brilliant.

WhileweallenjoyedagreatdayoffschoollastFridaybecauseof the snow, unfortunately it meant that 7E could not perform in their second concert on the 4th March with the full Hallé Orchestra. However 7T went earlier in the week and said it was a wonderful experience to perform on the Bridgewater Hall stage alongside such an amazing orchestra!

Thank you to Mrs Pickett and Mr Beckwith for helping to make this happen!

By Eleanor Whitehead (7E) and Madison Holt (7E)

Over the past few months two year seven forms, 7E and 7T, have been taking part in the Hallé for Youth project. They have had the exciting opportunity to work alongside extremely talented dancers, musicians and an artist.

String Ensemble at the Year 11 Leaver’s PromBy Libby Collard & Lewis Fowden (9E)

On Wednesday 22nd June, the Saddleworth School String Ensemble supported by teachers Mr Wadsworth, Mrs Knight, Mrs Drumm and Mrs Pickett played at the Year 11 Leaver’s Prom in Rochdale Town Hall. We all thoroughly enjoyed dressing up and playing at the special event. We played a large range of music including classics such as, ‘Autumn’ and ‘Winter’ by Vivladi whilst also playing new pieces such as ‘Make you feel my love’ by Adele. In addition, before the meal began, Hannah-Louise and Elise Siddiqui along with Delphine Alsop –Parsons and Libby Collard performed a number of solos and duets whilst the Year 11s arrived. The evening was a huge success and we all enjoyed performing at such a prestigious event. The night was amazing and we all hope to do something like it again in the future.

By Delphine Alsop-Parsons (9N)

On Wednesday 22nd June, Saddleworth School’s String Ensemble was invited to play at Friezland Primary school to encourage younger pupils to take up a string instrument such as the violin, viola or cello. Weplayedavarietyofpieces, alldifferenttypesof music and these included pieces such as ‘Autumn and Winter’ by Vivaldi, ‘Rock Around the Clock’ by Bill Haley and the Comets and ‘Hedwig’s Theme’ from the Harry Potter movie soundtrack. We feel that the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience since they participated

with enthusiasm and eagerness, and were also curious to learn more about the instruments and the music by asking Mrs Pickett lots of questions. We hope that when they join Saddleworth School, they may be interested in joining our growing String Ensemble which could one day turn it into a school orchestra.

Today has been simply INCREDIBLE!Year 9 Student

It is the vision of the Music Department at Saddleworth School to provide outstanding musical learning and performance opportunities for our young musicians. This year we have had the opportunity to present many excellent experiences for our young musicians to enhance their musical skills by interacting with professional musicians.

The Music Department have also invited the Saddleworth School musicians of the future (instrumentalists from our partner primary schools) to join us to share and experience these fabulous musical opportunities in a live capacity.

On Friday 29th April the Music Department were very fortunate to be in a position to host the Guards Brass Ensemble at Saddleworth School to perform concerts and work on a one-to-one basis with our brass students. The Guards Brass Ensemble is a 10 piece brass ensemblethatismadeupofmusicianswhoarethefinestbrassplayers in the British Military Bands that make up the Household Division – on this particular occasion we were graced by players from: the Grenadier Guards, the Irish Guards, the Coldstream Guards and the Coldstream Guards. These musicians regularly perform in concerts, state ceremonies, parades, celebrations and concert tours all over the world.

The concept for the Guards Brass performance at Saddleworth School came about many months ago and the project has involved months of planning between Mr Beckwith and his lifelong friend Gavin Hall (Principal Cornet of the Grendier Guards) who hails from Meltham and is a product of the great Yorkshire Brass Band movement having studied from an early age with Saddleworth’s very own Brass legend Bert Howarth. Gavin’s rise to the rank of Principal Cornet / Trumpet with the Grenadier Guards started as a member of the Meltham Junior Band Band, the Meltham Band, via the Sellers Engineering Band and the famous Brighouse and Rastrick Band with whom Gavin won every major honour available at the highest level of brass banding in the UK. Gavin joined the Household Division as a Cornet and Trumpet player in the Coldstream Guards Band staying in the band for 12 twelve years before moving across the hallway to the Band of Grenadier Guards. During his time in the British Military Gavin lists the annual remembrance events at the Albert Hall and the Cenotaph in Whitehall as engagements which ‘no Household Division musician wants to miss. But part of the pleasure is never knowing what might come along’. For example, last year he appeared in a 36-piece fanfare team at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert alongside Robbie Williams.

The incredibly versatile brass ensemble performed two concerts during the day and also worked with all the brass musicians at SaddleworthSchool.Thefirstmorningsessionconcertwasinfrontof a packed Saddleworth School Main Hall – approximately 230 primary school children from our partner primary schools attended theconcert.Forsomeofthesestudentsthiswouldbethefirsttimetheyhadexperiencedbrassmusicplayedthiswayanddifferentto the traditional Saddleworth Brass Band tradition. Many of the performers from the Guards Brass and the bands that make up the household division are products of the Brass Band tradition themselvesplayingwithsomeofthefinestbrassbandsinthecountry as well as their military band commitments. The feedback from the highly entertaining and informative performance was fantastic – every student in attendance enjoyed the experience and some primary students even got to try on the traditional British Military Busby at the event.

Following on from the morning session Saddleworth School brass musicians were treated to some expert guidance from instrumentalists from the Guards Brass. The Saddleworth School Brass Xplosion and Brass Ensemble received some valuable ensemble coaching from musicians Gavin Hall, Steve Clarke, OwenDuffieldandSimonHall.Itwasheart-warmingtoseeourtalentedyoungmusiciansperformingwithconfidenceandgusto

totheseprofessionalmusicians–theadviceofferedfromtheGuards musicians was extremely useful and encouraged our youngsters to get the basics right including playing tips that are relevant to every brass player. At the same time as this ensemble sessionthedifferentbrassplayingsectionsallattendedamasterclass / workshop on their particular instrument led by the following: Trumpets & Cornets: Ben Beavis & Ray Plant, Horns: Troy Taylor-Smith, Trombones: Paul Hooper, Simon Hall & Steve Clarke, Percussion: Kevin Miles, Tuba: Ian Shepherd and the Euphonium masterclass was jointly led by Mike Altree and the ensemble musical director Andrew Porter formerly and outstanding Euphonium player with the Leyland Band and the hugely successful Yorkshire Building Society Band in the 2000’s. The advice, passion and inspiration shared at these sessions was a real showcase of the musician’s art form passing on the knowledge they have gathered over their professional careers.

ThefinalsessionofthedaywasanafternoonconcerttoSaddleworth School musicians and parents, it was wonderful to see so many instrumental students who do not play brass instruments in attendance soaking up the phenomenal music making by the Guards Brass Ensemble. The ensemble performed fieryLatinAmericannumberssuchas‘TheChildrenofSanchez’byChuck Mangione, Gavin Hall gave a masterclass in cornet playing performing the beautiful lyrical cornet solo ‘Don’t Doubt Him Now’, original music in Purcell Fantasy’ composed by the groups tuba player Ian Shepherd and I must mention the blazing scream trumpet playing of Ben Beavis in Bill Conti’s ‘Gonna Fly Now’ from Rocky… to hear this quality of playing live was just sensational! In addition to the performance given by the Military musicians there were short performances by the School’s very own Brass Xplosion and Brass Ensemble demonstrating the pieces they had developed earlier in the day – it was a very proud moment to see our young musicians playing alongside these world class artists. A huge thank you goes to every member of the Guards Brass Ensemble for engaging and inspiring our musicians.

Theentiredaywasaterrificsuccessanditishopedthatwewillbeable to hold a similar tutoring day again in the future that will allow ourcolleaguesoutsideSaddleworthtobenefitfromthewonderfulexperience of hearing these musicians performing live, as well as gaining valuable performing experience and instrumental tuition from some of the very best in the business. Quote of the day from a year 9 brass student… “Today has been simply INCREDIBLE!” Please keep your eyes peeled for more top class music making at Saddleworth School in the next academic year.

National Youth Orchestra InspireBy Hannah-Louise Siddiqui (10V)

Over the February half term, I travelled to Liverpool University for a three day residential with the National Youth Orchestra Inspire. The orchestra was made up of over 100, specially nominated string players from across the UK, who had all come together to play challenging repertoire and receive tips from NYO tutorsandmusicians.Wefocusedonplayingunusualpiecesthatportrayedadifferentsideto string instruments, which I found extremely interesting to learn about. After 3 enjoyable and hard-working days, the orchestra performed to family and friends in the Guild building within Liverpool University.

• The Repertoire:• Mein Weg (Arvo Part)

• The Archer and the Stag (Freya Ireland)

• Orchestral arrangement of The Girl with the Flaxen Hair (Claude Debussy)

• Shaker Loops Movement I (John Addams)

NYO Inspire has opened my eyes to orchestral music even more, and made me feel part of something exciting. Being with other people who share my passion for music is something that I will never forget. I have made so many friends as a result of NYOInspire, whichfulfilleditspurpose.I am indeed inspired by this amazing experience!

On the evening of Tuesday 1st March, Year 10 and 11 GCSE Music students showcased their talents by performing either an individual piece or a group piece as a practice for their up-coming Performance exams. The evening took place in the Drama Studio and was watched by around 30 members of their families and friends. The students have worked hard in preparing pieces for this evening and for their exams and this showed in the excellent performances given. All students are wished the best of luck in their exams: Year 11 on the 7th and 8th March and Year 10 on the 23rd and 24th May.

Thisyear’ssummerconcertwasslightlydifferenttopreviousyearsin that the event was promoted, planned and hosted by the Year 10 BTEC Music class – this planning and preparation of a musical event goes towards their coursework grades. This group of students did a sterling job on the night and the concert ran very smoothly due to their input – a special mention must go to Jonathan Walton and Niamh Connor for hosting the entire evening.

Our gifted musicians gave splendid performances throughout the evening including performances from the Saddleworth School Brass Band, Concert Band, Brass Xplosion, POP Choir, Guitar Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, String Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Woodwind Ensemble and the debut performance of the Session Orchestra. The programme included fantastic performances from two rock bands both made up of Key Stage 3 students: Year 9 Band HER (Eve Matley, Rowan Heywood & Hollie Appleby) gave a wonderful rendition of the Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson anthem ‘Valerie’ – year 7 bandDEALWITHITgavetheirfirsteverperformancebypresentingaconfidentperformanceofJustinBieber’s‘LoveYourself’.

Huge congratulations go to our fantastic soloists on the evening: Hannah-Louise Siddiqui and Bridget Atkin gave a beautifully expressive rendition of Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’, Niamh Connor performed admirably in ‘Say Something’ by A Great Big World, Maddison Potter-Farrants delighted the audience with her skilful performance of Leonard Cohens ‘Hallelujah’, Annalise Kingston-Taylor also gave a moving musical performance of ‘Ghost’ by Ella Henderson, Eve Matley & Rowan Heywood took the stage to feature in a beautiful performance of ‘Songbird’ based on the Fleetwood Macversionofthisclassicsong.Lastbutbynomeansleastourfinalsoloist of the evening was last year’s Donald Clarke Award winner Delphine Alsop-Parsons who presented a powerful, mature and highly expressive performance of the ‘Glasgow Love Theme’ from Love Actually.

Each school ensemble proved that their hard work over the entire yearreallyhasbeenpayingoff–thevarietyofrepertoireofferedat this concert is a testament to the dedication given freely by ensemble directors at Saddleworth School. The concert featured an eclectic mix of music from Neil Hefti’s 1950’s big band chart Cute, the Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble represented the 1960’s in high quality performances of music by the Beatles, a quick trip through the 1970’s by the Brass Ensemble performing their favourite ABBA Medley and the Guitar ensemble’s version of ‘Mama Mia’ and

the Alman Brothers tune Jessica (recognisable as the theme from Top Gear!). The 1980’s had their moment with the POP Choir performing the Bon Jovi classic ‘Livin’ On A Prayer’, the Brass Xplosion performing their take on Kim Wilde’s ‘Kids in America’ and the wonderful Concert BandofferedamedleytitledEightiesFlashback.The1990’sand2000’s were well represented by our soloists and rock bands, the String Ensemble who performed music by Adele’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’ and the school Brass band who gave us their rendition of the Take That hit ‘Rule the World’.

TowardstheendoftheconcertourannualawardswereofferedtostudentswhohavemadearealdifferencetomusicatSaddleworth School either as a performer or by demonstrating fantastic commitment to music at the school. The 2016/2017 music department awards were awarded as follows: Oliver Bates (Mostprogress&EffortAward),LolaGladwin(100%attendanceto instrumental lessons), Bridget Atkin (Outstanding Contribution Award) and our highest accolade the Donald Clarke Award for the most Improved Instrumentalist was awarded by Patron of the School Donald Clarke to Year 10 GCSE Music student, Violinist & Vocalist Hannah-Louise Siddiqui.

The 2016 Summer Concert was a wonderful event that truly showcased the musical talents we have at Saddleworth School and we should be rightly very proud of the hard work and commitment demonstrated by every young musician who has taken to the stage this year. We are already looking forward to Christmas 2016…. But until then may I take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a wonderful and restful summer break.

Our final performance of the academic year saw the musicians of Saddleworth School perform their final showcase based on the theme Rock and Pop music. By Garrath Beckwith
