Latino Cultural Center

Our Vision and Mission The Latino Cultural Center envisions a more inclusive campus, where we can respectfully challenge each other to uphold principles of human dignity and ensure the nourishment and protection of cultural diversi-ty. Our mission is to engage the UIC campus and local communities to deepen understanding of the diverse cultural heritages and identities of Latinos, issues affecting their lives, and creative solutions they are using to improve community life. To accomplish our vision and mission, the LCC identifies, creates and promotes opportunities to:

Program Series The Latino Cultural Center (LCC) advances its mission through programs and initiatives that feature cultural and artistic expressions, intercultural and civic dialogues, scholarly presentations, and first-voice stories. Our programs and initiatives draw on cultural heritage to address contemporary issues, connect cultural and en-vironmental sustainability, and build partnerships across diverse students and communities for positive so-

cial change. Click one of the programs listed below to learn more or see upcoming events HERE.

Women in Science and Engineering The goal of the UIC Women in Science and Engineering Program, WISE, is to increase the number of women, majority and minority, students pursuing and graduating in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines, and to promote the recruitment, retention and advancement of women who have chosen academic careers. WISE supports women undergraduate and graduate students in STEM by sponsoring activities that foster a positive educational and professional environment, and enable excellence in scholarship, teaching and service. UIC WISE includes in its mandate the fields of biology, chemistry, earth and environmental science, math, physics, engineering, medicine – basic sciences, and technology.

WISE Pre-College: In order to foster the next generation of STEM students, we work with K-12 schools, community groups, Girl Scouts and others who want to expose young people, boys and girls, to STEM ca-reers through campus visits, WISE visiting the community and visits to Chicago’s scientific institutions.

WISE On-Campus: In order to maintain a supportive community on campus, the WISE program offers a variety of activities including peer mentoring, the WISE Wing, monthly events, WISE Ambassadors, WISE Chicago, WISE Data and scholarships.

WISE Guys: Are men welcome to join? Of course! All WISE events are public and men do attend. They want to know what it is like to be a neuroscientist and how to get into graduate school too. We have dubbed them WISE Guys.

FAFSA

How and When to Apply

The application is available online now for the Fall of 2018. For those of you who want to get a jump start on the application process feel free to begin completing the application by going to Transfer Application. Be sure to complete the UIC web application (not the common application) by clicking on the box that says “Fall 2018 – Transfer, readmission, & second bachelor’s application”. Remember, as long as you have maintained the 3.0GPA you are guaranteed admission. You will still need to include your personal statements and submit any other written materials required by your individual UIC college. This information can be found in your application. I would suggest you go into the application soon and take a look at the requirements and write down the personal statement questions. You may exit and return to the application at any point in time. Your application will not be considered until we receive your transcript that includes this

semester’s (Fall 2017) final grades so DO NOT send your transcripts until January.

Your deadline to apply is February 1, 2018. The deadline to submit supporting documents (your transcript(s) and fee or fee waiver form) is February 15, 2018.

Transcripts can be ordered online through Parchment and sent electronically to the University of Illinois - Chicago. They already have our email address so no need to worry. You may also have your registrar print out a copy and you can either mail it or drop it off to us a the Admissions Office in SSB. Please be sure they are unopened. For those of you who have a few credits from other institutions please be sure to submit these official transcripts as well. There is no way around this. You must include ALL coursework even if you feel it will not transfer. Without this information your application will be considered incomplete and you will be denied.

Note: You may receive emails from UIC stating that the deadline to transfer is March 31. This does not apply to you if you intend to be admitted under the Guarantee. The GAT application deadline will always be February 1. You are able to apply to the Honors College through your general application. The link to apply to the Honors College will be located on the left of your application page.

Feel free to contact Patricia if you have any questions or concerns. [email protected]

programs. If you are in need of financial assistance, you are highly encouraged to complete the

FAFSA

The Aid Process

FAFSA: In order to be awarded financial aid at UIC, you must complete a Free Application

for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year. The FAFSA will be available on October 1st each

year— UIC’s priority filing deadline is December 1st.

PIN/FSA ID: You and your parent, if applicable, must have a Federal Student Aid Personal

Identification Number (PIN) in order to be able to sign your electronic FAFSA. Students and a par-

ent, if applicable, must have a Federal Student Aid ID (login) to sign the electronic FAFSA. You

can get your PIN/FSA ID here.

UIC’s School Code: 001776

You must list UIC’s school code on their FAFSA. Otherwise, UIC will not receive your FAFSA

information and cannot award you financial aid. UIC’s school code is 001776.

Student Status: Students are considered dependent or independent based on the infor-

mation provided on the FAFSA. Most undergraduate students are considered dependent. All grad-

uate and professional students are considered independent. Dependent students must report pa-

rental income information on their FAFSA. Dependency is not a status of choice. Dependency sta-

tus for financial aid is not based on whether or not: a student lives with a parent, a student is finan-

cially self-supportive, or parents claim a student as a dependent on their taxes.

Student Aid Report (SAR): After receiving your FAFSA, the federal processor will send you

a Student Aid Report (SAR) electronically (unless you filled a paper FAFSA). The SAR lists all the

information you submitted on the FAFSA and explains the EFC calculated from that information.

Review the SAR for accuracy. To make any corrections, log on to the FAFSA website.
