Xavier China Experience 2010
Mr. Brian Maraa - International Programs Coordinator
Its finally here. Many of you have been waiting a long time for the XCE. You filled out applications, wrote essays, and went to
interviews. You waited for weeks as your teachers and administrators chose the participants. Then you waited some more while you
submitted documents, paid fees, and attended orientations.
Now its time to leave, and I know that many of you have mixed feelings. On one hand, you may be excited to experience new
things. You may have heard about how fun XCE is, and you want to have fun too. On the other hand, you may also feel nervous.
How will you survive for so long without family? Will you get along with your roommates? Will you be able to speak in Chinese?
It is just right that you feel these things. I can guarantee that the XCE will be a positive and happy experience--something you
will remember for the rest of your lives. I can also guarantee that it will be very difficult--maybe one of the most difficult experiences
you have had in your lives so far. So how will you manage the difficulty? Allow me to give three tips.
First, be flexible. Not everything will go the way that we plan or hope it will. Be willing to adjust in case things change. Be will-
ing to compromise with your roommates, as they might have different ways of doing things.
Second, be open. As you can read in our Tips for a Good Roommate Relationship, being open about how you feel will make
it easier for people to adjust to you. Be open with your group and your mentor. You have very helpful and and caring supervisors
who are willing to listen to you and guide you. Do not hesitate to talk to them. Be willing to share your thoughts, feelings, and ideas.
Finally, be proactive. This means that you should find out what you need to do on your own, and do it even before you are asked
to. Dont wait until the last minute to do things. Take charge of your experiences.
I pray that your journey will be a safe and memorable one. Take care and Luceat Lux!
Mr. Maraa
MESSAGES
Ms. Aimee Apolinario - Grade School OIC
Dear XCE boys,
There is so much to look forward to in the next six weeks, but don't let the excitemen
let you lose sight of the more important things you have to do and learn from the XCE.
While you are away from home, you will probably enjoy the independence that you
will experience. This, however, also means that you are expected to be more responsible.
No one will fix your things for you and no one will be there to pick up things for you.
When tasks are assigned, you are expected to manage your own time. Of course, your
teachers will be there to guide you, but the whole China experience will not be complete
you simply rely on others.Because of the different learning environment, you are most likely to have fun. This
actually good, but do not forget to take your school work seriously. The program is de-
signed to allow you to learn about the content of the different subjects but also about
China's culture, language, and its people. More importantly, the program aims at helping
you learn more about yourself and your identity as Xaverians and as Chinese-Filipinos.
We all pray for your safe trip and we will await for your exciting stories about China
when you come back here in school. Meanwhile, we shall journey with you through the
web so please keep in touch by posting updates and pictures. Take care of yourselves and
of each other to make this trip a fruitful and unforgettable one. Luceat Lux!
Yours truly,
Ms. Apol

Checklist
A rush of thoughts came to me as I walked into my classroom. Would our teacher be
strict? How would classes be conducted here? Would I be able to learn properly here?
Questions like those went to my head as I entered the classroom. All nervousness faded,
however, when I saw my teacher. - Anton Lapez

avier High School Student Handbook Revised Version 2006, the schoolority to discipline students in the following places: at school-relatedn the school bus, during games, picnics, field trips, assem-or similar events.
isions written in the handbook shall apply to all XCE students during theo the offenses written in the handbook, a few particular reminders aree unique nature of this school activity. They are as follows:
GeneralBehavior /Conduct
Given the unpredictable nature of travel, proper conduct is of utmost impor-tance. Students are asked to remember that they are representing the school, and their language, clothing, attitudes, and behavior, should reflect that.
Students are asked to treat each other, their faculty team members, and all thepeople they meet with the utmost respect. Chinese laws and customs shouldbe observed always. The general rule is to act as if you are a guest in some-ones home.
Since students will be spending a lot of time exploring and seeing new things, itis important that they follow directions and instructions carefully. Failing tofollow instructions or participate in activities may result in a sanction, depend-ing on the gravity of the offense.
Supervision/ Curfew
It will be important for Xavier faculty to keep track of students locations atall time. Students must not leave the designated venue (wherever they aresupposed to be) without explicit permission from the supervisors. Leavingthe venue will result in severe sanctions.
Similarly, green slips may be given for breaking away from their assigned groupwithout permission.
There is a strict curfew of 9:30pm. Everyone must be in the dorm by 9:30pm,unless accompanied by a supervisor. Breaking curfew will result in sanctions.

In the most severe cases, such as the possession of drugs, blatant destruction ofproperty, physical assault, or any case in which the student is a danger to himself orto those around him, Xavier reserves the right to send a student home. In such acase, the parents will shoulder the cost of flight arrangements for the student andaccompanying faculty member

1. Close your door when you leave the room, and always bring your key. If we see a door open
and the room is empty, we will close the door.

WHEN OUT OF THE DORM
1. Use the CR before we leave.
2. Move quickly and efficiently. Watch where your supervisors and classmates are going. Ifyou need to stop for any reason, let your supervisor and your groupmates know.
3. If you're sitting on the bus or subway and an elderly person boards, offer your seat. Takenote especially if you are sitting in a seat reserved for the elderly or handicapped.
GENERAL BEHAVIOR REMINDERS
1. Be on time. Be prepared. Always check the schedule, so you know what to expect.
2. Watch your language, even when you think that no one around you understands. Plenty of
people understand English, and you never know if there are other Filipinos in the crowd.
3. Our goal is not just to follow rules and social customs. Our goal is to be models and exam-ples of good behavior. Let's aim to inspire others with our words and actions. Luceat Lux!

1. Do your laundry regularly. Dont wait for it to pile up! A good rule of thumb is to wash
every six or seven days.
2. Make sure you give yourself enough time. Set aside about an hour and a half. Althoughthe washing time is only about an hour, you still need to put the clothes / soap into the ma-chine and take everything back out. Then you have to hang your clothes to dry. Youll havemore time on weekdays. Many people will want to wash clothes on the weekends.
3. Sort your clothes into colored clothes and whites. This might mean two loads of laun-dry. You might want to combine your clothes with a roommate so that you dont waste aload of laundry (combine your colored clothes together in one machine and combine your
whites in another machine).
4. Turn the machine on and place detergent first. This allows the laundry detergent to
dissolve properly. Place your clothes in after you see the detergent has dissolved (after just10-20 seconds).
5. Do not place too many clothes in the machine. Gently place your clothes into the ma-chine. You should not have to stuffyour clothes down. If you place too many clothes intothe machine, none of your clothes will be cleaned properly.
6. Be ready to get your clothes early. Other people will want to use the machines also. Ifyour laundry is unattended, it may be taken out of the machine and placed on the floor. Ifthat happens to you, you will have to wash all over again...

The first time that I did my laundry, I felt like a newborn baby who didnt know anything. I
didnt know how to take out the dust and dirt from my clothes. I tried scrubbing, but I blis-
tered my hands especially when I got to the denim pants. To make it easy, I left the clothes
soaked on bleached water overnight and hoped that it would work. Guess what? The next
day, the water was black and my white shirts became colored! I felt as stupid as a goldfish
because I knew that I shouldve separated the coloreds from the whites. I forgot about this.
Now I have gotten used to doing my own laundry, no matter how hard it is. Because I tried, I
learned what and how to do my laundry. - Jon Chongson
TIPS for a GOODROOMMATE Relationships
You will be living with two or three other roommates for
six weeks. It is very important that you make an effort to getalong with them. Pay attention to the way that you act (howyou arrange your things, how long you spend in the bath-room), and be aware of the effect that your actions have onyour roommates.
Conflicts with your roommates may arise. Do not worry.Try your best to talk to the other person and resolve thesituation in a calm way. You do not need to tell everyone elseabout it or complain right away.
Here are some concrete tips that you can follow tominimize or avoid conflict:
1. Be clear from the beginning.Let your roommate know as soon as you can about your
little quirks and preferences. (like pressing the snooze button10 times every morning, or being a neat freak, etc.) It's notfair to expect him to pick up on them right away, and commu-nicating what you need is one of the best ways to eliminateproblems before they become problems.
2. Address things when they're little. Is your roommate always forgetting his stuff for the
shower, and taking yours? Addressing things that bug you whilethey're still little can help your roommate be aware of some-thing he may not otherwise know. Addressing little things is
much easier than after they've become more serious.
3. Respect. This may seem simple, but it's probably one of the biggest
reasons why roommates experience conflict. Respect meansasking permission if you want to borrow, use, or take any ofhis stuff, giving each other the private space and time that oneneeds, or simply just listening to what each one has to sayabout anything.
4. Be open.Be open to new ideas and experiences. You should e
to learn, grow and change, and the same should happyour roommate. Realize that things will change for boyou. Be comfortable addressing things that unexpectedly up, setting new rules, and being flexible to your changing
ronment. Keeping communication lines open will helpresolve any issues that may rise.
5. Follow the Golden Rule.Treat your roommate in the very same way you would
want to be treated. Remember that you cant control otpeople, but you can always control how you will relate wthem.

When you go abroad youre going to experi-ence new cultures, people, food, music and probably anew language. All of the newness, combined with thelack of familiar people and things, might cause you tohave some anxiety. This anxiety is called culture shock.Expect to experience some degree of culture shock.Culture shock can be put into four stages. Once youbecome familiar with the stages you will be betterable to combat it.
1. Honeymoon Stage The first few days after your arrival in a newcountry is usually easy. You are still excited and eagerto learn about the country you are in.
2. Frustration Stage After sometime your initial excitement maydecline. You may also start to feel frustrated. for vari-ous reasons. SInce your excitement diminishes, youmight start to feel disinterested about your surround-ing. Homesickness will start to creep in and you might
feel anxious about adapting.
How to handle the frustration stage Dont blame the host country or its people for
your feelings. Your anxiety and frustration happensto many people who study, work or travel abroad.
Remember, youre in a new environment and get-ting accustomed takes time. How you handle thisfrustration that determines how you grow.
Dont be negative; itll make things worse. Stay positive. Think about what youre learning
about new people, food, and culture.
Try keeping a journal chronicling your experiences.
3. Understanding Stage After a while, you will be used to your envi-ronment. This happens when you develop a morebalanced view of your experience. You become morecomfortable in your environment, gain new friends, become less homesick and handle situations better.
4. Acclimation Stage When you reach this stage, you feel that youbelong to the environment that you are in. You feelless like a foreigner and start to consider the countryas your second home. You can be objective about thegood and the bad aspects of the host country.
Once you reach the acclimation, youll have
the satisfaction of knowing that you can
live successfully in two cultures; this is a
huge milestone.

Stereotypes area set of assumptionsabout a certain group of peoplewhose actualbeliefs, habits and reali-
ties more often than not disagreewith the assumptions.
Stereotypes are usually basedon factors such as exaggera-tion, ignorance, racism, cul-tural factors or even histori-cal experiences.
Stereotyping is therefore a negativeway of seeing people. This is eventrue of what are called "positivestereotypes." A positive stereotype iswhere we use a blanket expression
for a whole people, i.e. all the Chi-nese are great at math, all Germansare well organized or all English peo-ple are well mannered. Although theintent behind the statement is posi-tive, it still does not reflect the truth.
The following are a few ways to getpast stereotypes:
1. Break AssumptionsEveryone has assumptions aboutothers. Assumptions are beliefsrather than truth and are usually in-fluenced by a number of factors. Peo-ple need to look at their assumptionsand ask themselves why they holdthose ideas or beliefs.
2. EmpathizeIn order to come to appreciate andunderstand people from differentcultures, empathy is vital. Throughputting yourself in someone else's
shoes you come to see or appreciatetheir point of view.
3. Avoid Herd MentalityHerd mentality refers to the idea ofsaying what everyone else is saying or
just thinking what everyone else is
thinking. Such a way of thinking limitscreativity, innovation and advance-ment as people are restricted in how
they think, approach and engage withpeople or challenges. Cultural com-petency can only develop if peopleare encouraged to think as individu-als, bring their cultural influences tothe table and share ideas that may beoutside the box.
4. Shun InsensitivityPeople can and do behave in cultur-ally insensitive ways. By attackingsomeone's person, you attack theirculture and therefore their dignity. This is divisive. When insensitive be-
havior is witnessed, it is the responsi-bility of all to shun it and ensure itremains unacceptable.

Communication Tips
http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/cultural-services/articles/intercultural-communication-tips.html
Working across cultures is a new experience formany people. Intercultural communication can bea dynamic and creative affair but occasionally dueto the inability to interpret people correctly it canbe a challenge. The following intercultural com-munication tips are provided to help peopleworking in international and multicultural envi-ronments get some basic insight into dealing
more effectively with people and not letting cul-ture become an issue.
1.Be Patient: Working in an intercultural envi-ronment can be a frustrating affair. Things may notget done when expected, communication can betiresome and behavior may be inappropriate. Pa-tience with yourself and others helps move be-yond such issues and address how to avoid similarincidents in the future.
2.Ask Questions: When you don't under-stand something or want to know why someonehas behaved in a certain way, simply ask. Askingquestions stops you making assumptions, showsthe questioned you did not understand them andhelps build up your bank of intercultural knowl-edge.
3.Respect: The foundation of all interculturalcommunication is respect. By demonstrating re-spect you earn respect and help create moreopen and fruitful relationships.
4.The Written Word: Sometimes peoplewho do not have English as their mother tongue
will read more proficiently than they speak. It is agood idea to always write things down as a backup.
5.Humor: In an intercultural environment oneman's joke is another's insult. Be wary of differ-ences in the sense of humor and also the accept-ability of banter and the like in a business envi-ronment.
6.Always Check: The easiest way of minimiz-ing the negative impact of intercultural communi-cation is to check and double check. Whetheragreeing something or giving instructions, a min-ute spent double checking all parties are 'readingfrom the same sheet' saves hours of work lateron down the line.
7.Be Positive: When faced with incidents ofan intercultural nature steer clear of blame andconflict. Stay positive, analyze the problem areasand work as a team to build strategies and solu-tions to ensure the same never occurs again.
8.Self-Reflect: A good intercultural communi-cator not only looks outwards but also inwards.Take time to reflect on your own communication, management or motivation style and see whereyou can improve as an individual.

Formation
It was a very hot day, but it was rain-
ing. This weather made it difficult to
dry my laundry. This got me worried,
but I let the days passed without
thinking about it. I felt all right until
it was time for me to decide what todo with my clothes. I was torn be-
tween washing my clothes or simply
hanging them to air dry. I decided to
wear my clothes twice that week.
When I woke up the next day, I knew
that something wasnt right. When I
got up, I washed my face and hair
and brushed my teeth. Then I got my
shirt and it stunk so badly! In the
end, I washed it including the others.
That day taught me a lesson to be
hygienic at all cost at all time. In-deed, that day was truly a really
memorable experience that I will
never forget. - Raoul Anonas
Keep a journal to record your experiences while abroad. This will not
only be a way of remembering your experiences when you return, but
will also be a manner in which you can measure your adjustment to the
host culture or progress in a foreign language.

liberty
Take all my will, my mind, my
memory
All things I hold and all I own
are Thine
Thine was the gift, to Thee I all
resign
Do Thou direct and govern alland sway
Do what Thou wilt, command,
and I obey
Only Thy grace, Thy love on me
bestow
These make me rich, all else will
I forego.
I WILL SING FOREVER
I Will Sing Forever
I will sing forever of Your love, O
Lord
I will celebrate the wonder of
Your name
For the word that You speak is
a song of forgiveness
And a song of gentle mercy and
of peace
Let us wake at the morning and
be filled with Your love
And sing songs of praise all our
days
For Your love is as high as the
heavens above us
And Your faithfulness as certain
as the dawn
I will sing forever of Your love, O
Lord
I will celebrate the wonder of
Your name
For the word that You speak is
a song of forgiveness
And a song of gentle mercy andof peace
I will sing forever of Your love, O
Lord
For You are my refuge and my
strength
You fill the world with Your life-
giving spirit
That speaks Your word
Your word of mercy and of
peace

IN HIM ALONE
In Him alone is our hope
(in him alone is our hope)
In Him alone is our strength
(unto him i pour out my heart)
In Him alone are we justified
In Him alone are we saved(he alone will save me with his
love and mercy)
What have we to offer
That does not fade or wither
Can the world ever satisfy
The emptiness in our hearts
In vain, we deny
(refrain)
When will you cease running
In search of hallow meaning
Let His love fill the hungerIn your soul till it overflows with
joy
You yearn to know
(refrain)
WE REMEMBER

We remember how you loved us
to your death
and still we celebrate, for youare with us here; And
we believe that we will see you
when you come in your glory,
LORD.

Here, a million wounded souls
are yearning just to touch you
and be healed.
Gather all your people, and hold
them to your heart.

bring the bread and wine to
share a meal.

Lord it would be peace here on
earth

Of living in confusion
When will we realize
That neither heaven is at peace
When we will live not in peace
(Refrain)
Verse 2:
Grant me serenity within
For the confusions around
Are mere reflections of
what's within
What's within in me

ANIMA CHRISTI
Soul of Christ
Sanctify me
Body of Christ save me
Water from the side of Christ
Wash me, Passion of Christ
Give me strength

Hear me Jesus
Hide me in thy wounds
That I may never leave thy sideFrom all the evil that surrounds
me
Defend me and when the call of
death arrives
Bid me come to thee
That I may praise thee
With thy saints forever
