Community and visited the exhibition by Diploma Engineering students at Ahmedabad.
19th November, 2011, AMA Auditorium
Dr. Samir K Brahmachari came down to the Ahmedabad Management Association to
address the Diploma engineering students and other members of the GTU community about
innovation. More than 400 students, faculties, industry people and GTU authorities participated
in the function. Dr. Akshai Aggarwal, Hon. Vice-Chancellor, GTU, welcomed Professor
Brahmachari and Padmashree Prof. Anil K Gupta, Executive Vice-Chair, National Innovation
Foundation, India.
The director general of the CSIR, in his address at AMA, said that CSIR is considering
opening its laboratories for validation and value addition of selected innovative projects of
engineering students of GTU. Apart from saying that CSIR will consider lending support to these
projects of GTU students from its 39 national laboratories, Prof. Brahmachari said that CSIR will
also create a fellowship for such innovative projects. He said that the idea is to foster
innovations which are Gandhian in nature and attempts to address the needs of the
economically underprivileged people. Professor Brahmachari also pointed out that the country
needs a special social networking system for technological innovators. He said that such a
networking will help in solving the issues of the 800 million Indians who are economically
underprivileged.
Dr. Brahmachari shared his innovative ways of developing CSIR labs across the nation
and harnessing the top scientist capacities into a new orbit and urged that each single faculty
even from Diploma engineering bears the capacity to lead towards path breaking socio-
technical innovations as per present need of the nation. He termed the current age of R&D and
innovation as the age of collaborative research driven on open source pedagogy for developing
frugal innovations. He said that socio-technical networking will be key aspects of next
generation of innovation development. He appreciated the efforts made by GTU Innovation
Council and shared the vision and action agenda of CSIR where students can play a critical role.
He shared that a creative mind is quite impatient and has a positive spirit, which brings forth

Professor Anil Gupta also addressed the audience and praised the efforts of Hiranmay
Mahanta and other young persons in making the function a success within three days.
Padmashree Prof Anil K Gupta, IIM-Ahmedabad shared his insightful thoughts and envisaged
that the steps taken by GTU Innovation Council and Techpedia will set new standard of
benchmarks in the decade of innovation driven by young minds inside colleges. He shared that
in many instances “The minds in the margin are not marginal minds” and the small town techies
are at par innovative than that of at big cities and established higher learning institutions. He
shared that the faculties must take utmost care to pose enough challenge to the budding young
minds even at polytechnic level to harness the best of their delivery capacity. He stressed on
developing collaborative, frugal and co-creative lateral innovation development stages where
young minds can contribute meaningfully to national challenges which are century old and
hence by overcoming the patience over inertia in living with the problems kept unsolved
indefinitely. He declared the Gandhian Engineering award which will be given away by
Padmabhushan R.A.Mashelkar at IIM-Ahd on 1st march 2011 to young technology students for
developing frugal/Gandhian innovations for masses.
As a part of the event, an exhibition was also organized by GTU Innovation Council and
Techpedia at the new campus of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A). The
exhibition displayed various prototypes of innovative ideas like generation of electric energy
from dance floors, combining home appliances to save energy and other innovations for
industrial purposes as well. After the address, Dr. Samir K Brahmachari went to the exhibition
He interacted with each of the students personally as he saw their innovative projects.
Engineering students with innovative projects stand a chance of making their way into the
national laboratories of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) or bagging CSIR
fellowships.
This function was one of its kinds because students from polytechnics of GTU
showcased their fully working innovation models at national stage visited and were able to
personally interact with the DG of CSIR. Mr. Hiranmay Mahanta said that the concept of
Gandhian Engineering & sciences /Frugal Engineering & sciences and innovation was for
“Creating more from less for more". He shared the progress report of GTU Innovation Council
with the audience. He shared that the efforts to democratizing the innovation management
process at GTU Innovation Council both in terms of scale and penetration have been unique in
any place in the world. (GTU Innovation council has bagged world education forum award in

2011 for unique and significant effort in forging linkages between industries-academia and
innovation.)
Techpedia is trying to develop ecosystem for scouting, nurturing and disseminating such
innovations via young technology minds. Quite a few colleges under GTU e.g Parul Polytechnic
Institute, LCIT Bhandu, Hashmukh Goswami college of Engineering, Govt. Polytechnic Surat etc
showcased the innovations done by Diploma engineering students in an exhibition at IIM-A
which was visited by Prof Brahmachari. He appreciated that GTU Innovation Council is trying to
foster the technology innovations at various colleges in Degree, Diploma and pharmacy colleges
in association with Gujarat Technology University. 25 Innovation Sankuls /clusters created at
GTU Innovation council have brought significant change in the mind and mindset which is
jointly driven by GTU and Techpedia. 300 plus innovation centers lead by Engineering faculties
and students in this mission at GTU Innovation Council has democratized the innovation
management process even at very ground level for the 1st time in the country.
