GTT- Specializations
Flight and Space, Energy and the Environment, and Medical Detective
GTT Advanced – Unit 4 Flight and Space
Unit 4: Flight and Space
Lesson:
1 – History of Flight and Space
Unit 4: Flight and Space
Unit 4: Flight and Space
Lesson:
2 – Aeronautics
Unit 4: Flight and Space
Additional Resources
• Whiteboxlearning.com
– Glider and rocket simulations
• Pitsco wing tester for airfoils
• Be sure to keep up with upgrades- airfoil tester is airfoil3 now
Whiteboxlearning.com
• Gliders 2.0 • A cloud-based virtual
modeling STEM application that guides students through an engaging, realistic glider development process capped by a very cool virtual airshow. Then, students can print custom templates to build their actual gliders.
Whitebox Learning Rockets 2.0
Virtual rocket design and flight simulation

Unit 4: Flight and Space
Unit 4: Flight and Space
Lesson:
3 – Traveling and Living in Space
Lesson 3 – AstroEngineer: Moon Rover Simulation
Use the design process to create a rover capable of different jobs
Design Process- now 6 steps
1. Define the Problem
2. Generate Concepts
3. Develop a Solution
4. Construct and Test a Prototype
5. Evaluate the Solution
6. Present the Solution
Energy and the Environment
Lesson 3.1.1- Energy comes in many forms
Mechanical Chemical Electrical
Heat/Thermal Light/Radiant
Nuclear
3.1.1 Add-ons
• The Next Frontier: Engineering the Golden Age of Green- a free DVD for educators
• www.thenextfrontiermovie.com/dvd.htm
• Preview it first
• Free resource- Spigot Science- online magazines for students that are free to download http://spigotsciencemag.com/site2
Lesson 3.1.2 Energy Crossroads
• The Energy Crosswords movie- about 50 min and there are questions that go with dvd- part about a brewery about 42 min into movie
• Carbon footprint- what is it, etc.
• http://www.myfootprint.org/- allows students to go on-line and calculate theirs and find ways to reduce it.
Lesson 3.1.3- Use Energy efficiently
• Finding household energy costs- make parents aware of what information kids need to collect
• We Energies has lessons and pamphlets with activities, worksheets, and experiments free
• Renewable energy and energy efficiency
Lesson 3.1.4- Measuring Energy
• Kidwind kits- • Order from Kidwind website - http://learn.kidwind.org/
Advanced Wind Experiment Kit -Classroom Pack $349.00 3 Turbines, Extra hubs, blade consumables, power output device Blade Design Consumables - $129 Balsa Wood, Corrugated Plastic, dowels Hobby Lobby, Lowes, Home Depot, or online might be cheaper Ordered 2 of the advanced wind kits ( 6 stands and plenty of extra hubs) for two classes 26 kids in a class. Get extra washers as well also ordered an extra blade consumables kit and I was glad I did. Another suggestion would be to "charge" the kids fake money for the consumables like they do in the Penguin Dwelling activity and the Oil Spill lab. That way kids will not be as wasteful.
Lesson 3.2- Energy Expo
• Students investigate different forms of energy and build a model and do a presentation using prezi, glogster, or powerpoint
Lesson 3.3
• Water Audit- good on-line calculators
• www.csgnetwork.com/waterusarecalc.html
• Product Lifecycle-sample posters can be downloaded and printed
• Make a Difference- http://earth911.com- an eco-friendly site
• Penguin dwellings- be sure to charge kids and keep track of their spending for materials
Penguin Dwellings-
While you wait for them to “ cook” there are videos in teacher notes about global warming
Medical Detectives
• Lesson 1 - Vital Signs-Temperature
• Logger Lite software and Go!Temp temperature sensors- use 1 liter and 2 liter bottles- 1 Go Temp sensor for every 2 kids
• Fever video- www.teachersdomain.org
• 8 minute TED Ed video on pandemics
• Chicken pox out breaks- use colored dots or water, baking soda, and phenolphthalein
• Used to simulate the different ways a disease can spread
Heart Rate and Blood Pressure
• Heart rate and blood pressure- school nurse may be able to help get some equipment
• Compare among group and talk about
• How body temperature relates
• To blood pressure and heart rate
Medical Detective 8.1.5
• Mystery Illness- identify food borne illness
• Print the patient description documents for students ahead of time
• E. Coli, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, Shingella, Monocytogenes
Medical Detectives 8.2
• Human Senses lab- sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch, and smell- Carolina Human Senses Kit
• Could find materials locally if have time
Human Senses Lab
• Taste- map your tongue’s taste buds for sweet, sour, bitter, umami, and salt
• Sight- blind spot test, dominant eye, color blind
• Smell- peppermint and clove oils
• Sound- tuning forks and clapping
• Touch- toothpicks and skin sensitivity
Medical Detectives
• Human Brain Anatomy vs sheep brain Anatomy
Sheep Brain tips
• Order the sheep brain with dura matter
• Give kids a lemon drop or peppermint before they start to dissect
• Make the labels for brain parts the day before to maximize time in the lab
• Brain disposal- check with janitor, but they can be double bagged and thrown out
Genetics
• Mystery Disease Diagnosis –Huntington’s disease
• Pedigrees
• Genetic Testing
Medical Detective- Murder Mystery
• Time of Death- 2 different sizes of plastic bottles
• Virtual Autopsy- brain removal no longer an option
• Suspect identification- Carolina exploring electrophoresis and forensics kit has a dvd that is a good resource- distilled water and 3-5 nine volt batteries
Murder Mystery
• A body is found on elevator and there are 3 suspects
• Collect DNA samples from each one and compare it to a blood sample found at the scene
• Using a gel medium and electrophoresis to see which one matches
• There is a video for teachers to watch to help set this up
Electrophoresis
