Based in Barnstaple, Devon, ND PrecisionProducts is marking its 40th Anniversarywith a number of positive actions. Havingtaken on three new staff from nearby TEConnectivity (formally Tyco Electronics)to cope with the demand for its precisionengineering services, the company has also invested in PSL Datatrackadvanced production control MRPsoftware, and additional CNC machiningtechnology is being assessed to furtherenhance efficiencies.

A hands-on, family-owned business, NDPrecision Products now has the thirdgeneration of the Squire family workingunder its roof. Managing Director, NickSquire, recalls: “When my fatherestablished the company in 1973, therewere just two employees equipped with amilling machine and a lathe, providingtooling and engineering support for anautomotive component manufacturer.”

Today, ND Precision Products provides afar broader service. Having invested inCNC turning, milling and high speedmachining centres, wire and die sink EDMmachine tools, and surface and cylindricalgrinding, its services have expanded tocater for almost every industry sector. Itprovides injection and compressionmould tools, multistage progression presstooling, complex fixtures and precisionmachined components, for demanding

customers in the aerospace, defence,pharmaceutical and medical, automotiveand motorsport, metrology, food andbeverage, subsea oil and gas sectors, aswell as providing support for generalprecision engineering companies.

“From a complex multi cavity mould tool toa simple punch and die set, every enquirywe receive is given a thorough review, andwe will often go the extra mile to ensure weoffer the customer an effective solution at the right price. We have even invested in laser marking and heat treatmentequipment to address customers’requirements,” Nick Squire explains.

A further example of the company’sforesight is evidenced by its investment inadvanced laser etching and weldingtechnology. The first large subcontractmachine in the South West, the laserwelder can accept workpieces up to350kg and is operated by staff withalmost a decade of experience, which isessential to getting any repair ormodification work right first time.

Expanding into new markets has been oneof ND Precision Products’ keys to success,and it was the first UK toolmaker toexhibit in Russia, as Nick Squire says: “Wetook the opportunity to exhibit at aRussian mould and tool show, where wepresented examples of the solutions wehad developed for a number of ourcustomers. It was extremely well receivedand we have quoted on a number ofprojects of various sizes since the event.”

Running machining centres at night andweekend should be a standard requirementfor modern production machine shops.Unattended small batch, high mix,production is a standard provision withEROWA automation.

When machining a high mix of parts Erowacan help with more unattended hours.

A standard pallet based handling systemis the key to achieving a substantiallyunattended production facility. Standardpallets can support a whole range of partswith their own individual fixture. Therequired mix of parts is then loaded intothe handling magazine ready to run.

At this point, the Erowa cell checks thatthe NC program exists and the correctcutting tools are available. Prioritising thejob order is the final task.

SSAB is a world leader in the specialistarea of abrasion resistant and highstrength steels which are marketed underthe well-known brand names of Docol,Domex, Weldox, Hardox, Armox andToolox. These steels have acquired areputation for high and consistent quality,and in spite of their hardness andstrength they are easy to bend, weld andmachine. In their heavy plate mill inOxelösund SSAB manufacture heavyplate being quenched and temperedupon delivery from the mill.

With respect to Toolox, engineering andtool steel, SSAB are the only steelproducer in the world who manufacturematerial in this totally unique waycompared to conventional tool andengineering steels. Therefore, exceptionalproperties are given to the steel using themetallurgical processes in the productionline. Made from pure iron ore, vacuumdegassed and continuous cast (using aspecial process developed in Swedencalled Controlled Soft Reduction) it isthen rolled, quenched and tempered tomeet the very exact specifications set bySSAB. Due to the high metallurgicalpurity, the cleanliness and very lowsulphur content achieved Tooloxcorresponds to ESR quality material.Every plate is uniquely produced, andeach plate is tested for hardness,toughness and homogeneity.

Toolox shows very low residual stresses,even after heavy machining of both gradesit is dimensionally stable and normallyrequires no stress relieving. Which isespecially useful with long thin sectionssuch as gear racks etc. Even if machinedmainly from one side the material staysextremely flat requiring no straighteningand no secondary machining.

Toolox can be fabricated into varioussections even tubes, it is very easy to welddue to the low carbon content whencompared with traditional tool steels,Toolox will also withstand temperaturesup to 590º C without any significant lossof room temperature toughness orstrength. SSAB recommend a stressrelieving operation after flame cutting,welding and spark erosion.

Toolox 33,300 HBW has an equalhardness to P20 (1.2311) but will machine~40-50% faster than 1.2311.It has a typicaltoughness which is about 5 times higherthan 1.2311. Toolox 33 also has THREEtimes the impact toughness of 42CrMo4and due to the lower carbon content it ismuch easier to weld.

Toolox44, 450 HBW (~45 HRC) , has beendeveloped from the company’s wellreputed steel Hardox, but due to it’sunique production process it can be usedas a hot application wear part up to 600C.It also has extremely high impact strengthbut can be readily machined and is veryeasy to weld. Both grades can be optically polished,nitride and PVD coated if required totailor-make surface properties .Forexample a surface hardness between 60to 65 HRC can be achieved after nitridingfor very high wear resistance applications,or a coating suitable to counteractcorrosive attacks, whilst still retaining avery tough core strength that is not proneto cracking or chipping.

WS2 is a problem solver for the Plastics Industry!

Many plastic injection moulders andtoolmakers are finding WS2 low-frictionsurface treatment the answer to theirrelease, flow and pick-up problems.

Indeed, the number of tools whereproduction was either difficult orimpossible being transformed by WS2 toa working condition continues to increase.

Many moulders are specifying WS2 onnew tools as a means of cutting the timespent on ‘getting the tool working’ whilereducing production ‘down time’ andcycle-times to a minimum.

WS2 is used on plastic injection moulds asa permanent release agent and ‘coated-on’ lubricant. WS2 is finding particularusage with unscrewing cores, injectionmould cavities and cores, inserts, knifeblades for film cutting, blow moulding,head tooling, clean room mouldingoperations, hot runner valve gear andenhancement of flow-in moulds with filingproblems. When used on stainless steelsit can eliminate pickup and galling onmetal-on-metal sliding parts.

A Midlands Electrical Switch Box moulderhad a problem mould with parts regularlysticking. WS2 was applied to both halvesof the mould. After three months thecompany reported 140 hours saving indown-time and 1/4 tonne saving inmaterial. The total job cost less than 200!
