The myth: Dogs with long hair are more likely to cause an allergic reaction than dogs with short hair.

The length of the hair shed doesn’t matter, but the breed of dog does. Some breeds shed less hair than others, and less shredding means fewer allergies. The three breeds of dog who shed the most hair are American Eskimo, Alaskan Malamute and Akita. You’ve been warned!

The myth: Puppies and kittens cause fewer allergy problems than older pets.

Young animals have no old skin to shed, so it usually takes a few months before kittens and puppies produce these allergens.
