Application to standard motors

• Torque characteristics and temperature riseWhen the inverter is used to operate a standardmotor, the temperature rises a little higher thanduring operation by a commercial power supply.The cooling effect decreases in the low-speedrange, reducing the allowable output torque. (If aconstant torque is required in the low-speed range,use a motor equipped with a separately ventilatingfan).

• VibrationUse of an inverter does not increase vibration ofa standard motor, but when the motor is mountedto a machine, resonance may be caused by thenatural frequencies including the natural frequencyof the machine system. * We recommend thatyou use rubber coupling or anti-vibration rubber.* We also recommend that you use the inverterjump frequency control function to avoid resonancepoint in the motor operation.Note that operation of a 2-pole motor at 60Hz orover may cause abnormal vibration.

• NoiseWhen an inverter drives a standard motor, themotor noise level increases compared with beingdriven by a commercial power supply.To reduce noise, set the inverter carrier frequencyat a high level. High-speed operation at 60Hz orover can result in more noise.

Application to special motors

• Explosion-proof motorsWhen driving an explosion-proof motor with aninverter, use a combination of a motor and aninverter that has been approved in advance. Suchapproved products are available in our specialproduct series. Contact Silectron Sistemi.

• Submersible motors and pumpsThese motors have a larger rated current thanstandard motors. Select the inverter capacity sothat these motors can run within the inverter-ratedcurrent.These motors differ from standard motors inthermal characteristics. Set a small value accordingto the motor’s thermal time constant for settingelectronic thermal relay function.

• Brake motorsFor motors with parallel-connection brakes, obtainthe brake power from the primary circuit(commercial power supply). If you connect thebrake power to the inverter power output circuitby mistake, problems may occur.Do not use inverters for driving motors equippedwith series-connection brakes.

• Geared motorsWhen the power transmission mechanism usesan o i l - l ub r i ca ted gearbox o r speedchanger/reducer, continuous motor operation atlow speed may cause poor lubrication.

In addition to the operation level, set the motortype (standard motor, inverter motor). For high-speed motors or water-cooled motors, set a smallvalue as the thermal time constant and protectthe motor in combination with the cooling systemOFF signal.

When driving several motors with an inverter,connect a thermal overload relay to each motorand turn on the inverter’s electronic thermal relay.

Application to standard motors

• Torque characteristics and temperature riseWhen the inverter is used to operate a standardmotor, the temperature rises a little higher thanduring operation by a commercial power supply.The cooling effect decreases in the low-speedrange, reducing the allowable output torque. (If aconstant torque is required in the low-speed range,use a motor equipped with a separately ventilatingfan).

• VibrationUse of an inverter does not increase vibration ofa standard motor, but when the motor is mountedto a machine, resonance may be caused by thenatural frequencies including the natural frequencyof the machine system. * We recommend thatyou use rubber coupling or anti-vibration rubber.* We also recommend that you use the inverterjump frequency control function to avoid resonancepoint in the motor operation.Note that operation of a 2-pole motor at 60Hz orover may cause abnormal vibration.

• NoiseWhen an inverter drives a standard motor, themotor noise level increases compared with beingdriven by a commercial power supply.To reduce noise, set the inverter carrier frequencyat a high level. High-speed operation at 60Hz orover can result in more noise.

Application to special motors

• Explosion-proof motorsWhen driving an explosion-proof motor with aninverter, use a combination of a motor and aninverter that has been approved in advance. Suchapproved products are available in our specialproduct series. Contact Silectron Sistemi.

• Submersible motors and pumpsThese motors have a larger rated current thanstandard motors. Select the inverter capacity sothat these motors can run within the inverter-ratedcurrent.These motors differ from standard motors inthermal characteristics. Set a small value accordingto the motor’s thermal time constant for settingelectronic thermal relay function.

• Brake motorsFor motors with parallel-connection brakes, obtainthe brake power from the primary circuit(commercial power supply). If you connect thebrake power to the inverter power output circuitby mistake, problems may occur.Do not use inverters for driving motors equippedwith series-connection brakes.

• Geared motorsWhen the power transmission mechanism usesan o i l - l ub r i ca ted gearbox o r speedchanger/reducer, continuous motor operation atlow speed may cause poor lubrication.

• Synchronous motorsIt is necessary to use software suitable for themotor type.Contact Silectron Sistemi for details.

• Single-phase motorsSingle-phase motors are not suitable for inverter-driven variable speed operation.Use a three-phase motor.* Even if a single-phase power supply is available,use a three-phase motor, because the inverterprovides three-phase output.

Combination with peripheral device

• Installation locationUse the inverter in an ambient temperature rangebetween -10˚ and 50˚C.Install an inverter on non-flammable material.The inverter and braking resistor surfaces becomehot under certain operating conditions.
