PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES – Practice and Teaching 1. Practice
Dates Practice and Training Activity Program/Description 1997-2017, 8 weeks, June-July, each summer
Group facilitator for 18-20 students from medicine, pharmacy, public health, nursing, social work and dentistry. Experiential poverty exercise is a day-long workshop that builds empathy and awareness, exploring daily decision making around health and other life issues among those living at and below the poverty level. Annual mentor workshop for 9-10 community organization’s leaders preparing to mentor students to develop their capacity as teachers. Community partners include: COTRAIC Early Head Start, Gwen’s Girls, YMCA Hazelwood, Bethlehem Haven, Sojourner House, Center of Life, Community Human Services, Gay and Lesbian Community Center, Heritage Community Initiatives, Sister’s Place, Braddock Youth Project

Internship Program for Masters students, Women’s Health Scholar Award and Community Health Speakers Bureau for students and junior faculty. These student and community-responsive projects were originally founded as part of a 3-year grant, and were sustained many years after its conclusion, providing students with opportunities to develop professional skills and provide service. 2007-8 Project Coordinator, (D. Abatemarco – PI), Evaluation of ‘Practicing Safety’ program. This entailed conducting qualitative research (focus groups and interviews) and chart reviews as part of a research team, to determine the utilization and impact of the ‘Practicing Safety’ curriculum by pediatric practices in Philadelphia and New Jersey cities, to reduce child neglect and abuse. 2004-6 Project Coordinator, (R. Goodman – PI), Senior Living Enhancement Program. This two year project, in collaboration with Allegheny County Housing Authority and the Center for Healthy Aging, was research with seniors in public housing throughout the county. A 6-step strategy for community capacity building and the 10 Keys for Healthy Aging were used by our research team, in testing strategies to impact the health of low-income seniors.
