Hold the CPU in place with one hand and engage the ZIF socket handle with the other – the handle will “snap” into place

Install the HFA per the instruction sheet – make sure the thermal interface material is properly applied/installed and that all points of HFA engagement are secure

Connect the CPU fan cable to the appropriate power socket on the motherboard – watch the orientation.

Elevate the motherboard for video card bracket clearance – the bracket needs to hang over an “edge”

Attach an appropriate power supply (check/set the voltage switch) – do not connect to wall power

Attach an appropriate video card and connect the video card to an appropriate monitor; turn on the monitor

Connect the power supply to a grounded power outlet via a good surge suppressor; turn on the surge suppressor and, as applicable, the power supply

Bridge the two “power-on/power-switch” pins in the front panel header – the system “should” start up

As applicable, hit the “Del” or “F2” key to enter the BIOS If you are able to enter the BIOS your bench test was

successful – motherboard, CPU and RAM are functional.

Remove the chassis cover, drive bays, and front bezel to provide easy access to component locations

As applicable, insert the chassis I/O shield – you may also need to knock out connector opening cover(s) in the I/O shield

Compare the layout of the mounting holes in the motherboard with the standoffs on the chassis “floor” – add, remove, or relocate the standoffs to match the motherboard layout

Install the motherboard – watch the chassis I/O shield area to make sure the EMI “fingers” contact the connector housings without blocking the connector openings

Connect the chassis front panel wires to the motherboard – watch the orientation of the connectors (+/-). Note that there may not be an exact match between available connectors (headers) on the motherboard and the wire set included in the chassis. At minimum you need to connect the power (on/off) switch. If included, also connect the reset switch, power-on LED, and hard drive LED – others as you desire.

Push the chassis “power-on” button – the system “should” start up. If not, remove the motherboard, check installed vs. required standoffs (adjust accordingly), reassemble, and retest until the system starts up.

As applicable, hit the “Del” or “F2” key to enter the BIOS

NVIDIA announced the GeForce FX GPU family – brings “cinematic computing” to the PC. Twice the transistors of GeForce4, .13 micron technology, supports 1GHz DDR II memory, AGP-8X, DirectX 9.X, “128-bit studio quality floating point”, and 128-bit color. Cards to be released starting in mid-to-late January, shipping in February. Range of line undisclosed.

SiS announced the Xabre600 processor – .13 micron, AGP-8X, 300MHz core, 300MHz memory, does not support DX9. Cards coming.

IBM announced that it will begin shipping SATA versions of its recently released Deskstar 180GXP series in 2003. On November 15th, IBM also changed its IDE hard drive warranty to match that of Western Digital, i.e., 3 years for drives with 8MB cache and 1 year for all others.

Seagate announced Barracuda 7200.7 and Barracuda 7200.7 Plus drives – 80GBs/platter, max 160GB, 2MB or 8MB cache, PATA and SATA versions. No spec available.
