GRU Airport triples cold storage capacity for imports and exports Investments will increase storage capacity for perishable goods and cargo with special requirements Guarulhos, March 2014 – To respond to the needs of foreign trade companies, GRU Airport Cargo (Cargo Terminal of GRU Airport – International Airport of São Paulo) is investing in the expansion of cold storage facilities for imports and exports, for both perishable good and cargo with special storage requirements. Once finalized, at the beginning of April, cold storage capacity will almost triple, increasing from 7,7OOm 3 to 26,000m 3 . Inaugurated on March 28th, cold storage for exports has a 1,700m 3 capacity, 220 positions, and controlled temperature between 2ºC and 8ºC. At Imports cold storage capacity will be 17,000m 3 with 1800 positions, and controlled temperature between 16ºC and 22ºC. Parallel to this, GRU Airport Cargo is investing in remodeling the existing 16 cold chambers, which currently have a 7,700 m 3 storage capacity. According to GRU Airport Cargo Director Marcus Santarém, there was high demand for increased capacity from imports and exports companies – especially from the pharmaceutical industry. “We also needed more up-to-date equipment, which would allow us to work with a wider range of temperatures, in order to meet the storage needs of different shipments”, he explains. In export the main items stored in cold chambers are fruits and pharmaceuticals, and in imports pharmaceuticals, fish and fresh produce. Guarulhos is leader in perishable goods imports and exports, and with the increased capacity, it is fully prepared for increased demand, including during the World Cup. Cargo Handling In 2013, GRU Airport Cargo handled 343,784 tons of cargo, a 3.6% increase in comparison to the previous year. Imports alone grew 8% during this period, while the domestic market remained stable, growing only 0.6%.
