The work of Carol Dweck

Carol Dweck has conducted research over the last

35 years with children and young adults.

She is particularly interested in how pupils view

themselves as learners.

Children’s self-theory is likely to have a major

effects upon their self belief, motivation to learn

and resilience.

Her theory is simple yet profound.

Her research is world renowned and adopted by

parents, teachers, business leaders, sports coaches

and I’m sure many, many more people.

Sort the statements…"It looks like that was too easy. Let's give you something

a bit more challenging."

"That isn't the right answer. You don't understand it yet.“

"You are so smart."

"I know it was hard, but look how your effort paid off."

"You’re really talented in math- you should definitely

focus on it next year."

"She’ll get it. She’s working on it and making progress.“

"You did so well! Keep working hard and you will do

great again next year."

How are mindsets created?

As a baby learns to walk…what do we

say when they fall?

Messages we give our children play a

vital part in developing their mindset.

“You learnt that so quickly!

You’re so clever!”

Could lead to child thinking…

If I don’t learn something quickly, I’m

not clever.

“You are brilliant! You can an A without

studying.”

Child thinks…

I’d better stop studying or they won’t

think I’m brilliant.

Value for our children

If parents want to give their children a

gift, the best thing they can do is teach

their children to love challenges, be

intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort,

and keep on learning. That way their

children don’t have to be slaves to

praise. They will have a lifelong way to

build and repair their own confidence.

Be curious. Show an interest. Ask

questions.

Tell me about it.

Show me more.

Explain how you did that?

How many different ways did you try before

it turned out the way you wanted?

Are you pleased with it?

How did you figure that out?

Observe and comment…

You did it!

You put your own shoes on.

Your brother gave you a huge smile when you

shared the bricks with him.

You have added a lot of detail to the people.

You have used so many colours, what made you

chose them?

I noticed your putting your ears in the water now

during swimming lessons, I remember when you

couldn’t do that.

You worked out a way to share and play together.

At The Oaks Infant School

We encourage children to challenge their brains and group

them according to ability rarely now.

In year two pupils are set chilli challenges.

We recognise the process of learning / the journey, as

much as the outcome.

We have regular assemblies, stories and songs to promote

and celebrate Growth Mindsets.
