Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat

Sr. Political leader of Nepali Congress

Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat, a senior leader of Nepali Congress,combines a rare background of an active politician and atechnocrat. He has been a member of the Party’s Central

Committee for the last 18 years, the Finance Minister for a record six times between1994 and 2015 and the Minister of Foreign Affairs once. He served as DeputyChairman of National Planning Commission from 1991 to 1994. Dr. Mahat, is afrequent contributor to various periodicals and daily broadsheets in Nepal. He writeson contemporary political and economic issues. Dr. Mahat was the first Chairman ofNepal’s University Grants Commission. He also served in the Board of Trustees ofthe Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok (1993/4). He was a recipient of the FrancisHumbert Humphrey Award for leadership role in the Public Service by the USIA andthe Institute of International Education, USA. He is honorary fellow of University ofConnecticut / Bridgeport. He did his Masters in Economics from Tribhuvan Universityin 1972 with a gold medal, he also holds a Ph.D. under Government of Indiascholarship from Gokhale Institute of Economics in Pune.

Dr. Upendra Mahato

Mahato went on to become a well known philanthropist andinternational entrepreneur with business ventures in many

European, Asian and African countries. His business interests are diverse: organic andAyurvedic fast-moving-consumer-products, banking, real estate, telecommunication,hydropower, health, education, media, and so on. Dr. Mahato believes that wealth ofone individual is worthless if the country remains impoverished. Hence, he has madesocial work and philanthropy one of the most important missions of his life. He is thePresident of Phul Kumari Mahato Memorial Trust, which is dedicated to the'Development of Communities through Philanthropy'. The Trust has already donatedmore than USD 6 million in various health, education, social and charitable causes.Dr. Mahato is the Founding President of the International Coordination Council ofNon-Resident Nepali Association with chapters in 75 countries in the world. TheAssociation works together for the economic prosperity of Nepal. In addition, he isthe President of Russia-Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry and theHonorary Consul General of Nepal to the Republic of Belarus. He holds a PhD anda DSc degrees in soil mechanics from the International Academy of InformationTechnology, Minsk, Belarus.

Mr. Swarnim Wagle

Member of the National Planning Commission (NPC) in theGovernment of Nepal

Swarnim Waglé is a Member of the National PlanningCommission (NPC) in the Government of Nepal, ranked at

par with an assistant minister. He served earlier in the same position between May2014 and November 2015. In his portfolio covering macroeconomics, trade andindustry, he advised on the Formulation of national policies and strategies. In theaftermath of the Great Nepal Earthquake 2015, Waglé co-led the Post DisasterNeeds Assessment (PDNA) and helped garner billion (US$) in pledges. He also ledNepal’s ministerial delegation to the landmark Third UN Conference on Financing forDevelopment in Addis. Waglé has worked as an international developmentprofessional for more than 15 years on policy assignments in over 20 countries, mostrecently as Senior Economist at The World Bank in Washington,D.C. Earlier at theUnited Nations Development Program (UNDP), he co-authored the flagship 2013Human Development Report titled “The Rise of the South,” and co-led from 2002to 2007 the Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Initiative. Having been the South Asiaeditor of Harvard Asia Quarterly (1999-2000) and a regular broadcaster on BBCNepali Service, he maintains an interest in current affairs. Waglé holds a PhD inEconomics from the Australian National University, an MPA in InternationalDevelopment (MPA/ID) from Harvard University, and a BSc (Econ) from the LondonSchool of Economics.
