Katelyn just completed her senior year at Loras College
in Dubuque. This fall she will begin teaching at Wapsi
Valley! We are excited to have her onboard again this

Static (Non Livestock) Information
All Static (Non-Livestock) Exhibits must be entered into
FairEntry.com by 11:59 PM on July 6th.
If you need help with the FairEntry process, please con-
tact the Extension Office at 641-394-2174. Computer
assistance will be available to help you enter your pro-
jects during office hours.
**Reminder—Club minutes should be emailed or turned in to the Extension Office after every meeting.

Online Leader Volunteer Training
Leaders: If you were not able to attend the 2017 Leader Volunteer Training held last January, the online training in 4-H Online is now available.
Instructions for the 4-H Online volunteer training should have been mailed to you, along with the BBQ ticket in-formation. If you need a copy of the instructions please email [email protected] to request another copy.
Training Deadline: July 1st. This is a state requirement for all leaders!

Register Fair Entry by June 15
FAIR ENTRY INFORMATION-(all animals and crops com-ing to the 2017 Fair).
All 4-H and FFA members will need to enter their crop and animal classes in Fair Entry by June 15th. Step by step instructions can be found: http:/www.extension.iastate.edu/chickasaw/content/fair-information.
FFA members are expected to use this process also.
Go to Fairentry.com to begin entering your projects. En-tries received after June 15th will be charged an addi-tional penalty entry fee of $20 per head. Entries will not be accepted after MONDAY June 19th.
Please indicate yes or no if you plan to put your animal in the auction. You will have one hour after each show to scratch your animal from the auction.

There will be no parental participation allowed in the judg-
ing of entries, except with prior approval from Extension
Staff.
New in 2017!! Members have between 8-10
pm to remove their projects from the static
building on Sunday evening. If they are not
removed by Sunday at 10 pm you will lose
your premium associated with that specific
project.

*** New for Fair 2017***
Due to sponsors not receiving thank you notes in
the past and resulting in a loss of long time spon-
sors, all winners of plaques will receive a Thank
You card in place of their plaque. A personalized
thank you card must then be turned into the office
at the fairgrounds before plaques will be distribut-
ed. All pictures will be taken with a generic
plaque. If you do not have your Thank You turned
in before the end of Fair we will hold your plaque
until a thank you note is received.
Last Call FSQA
As a reminder, all youth 4th grade and older exhib-
iting livestock will need to attend an FSQA Training
or Test Out by July 1st in order to show livestock at
the fair. Horse, Dog, and Pet Exhibitors are the only
exception. If you still need FSQA call the office ASAP
for Training dates in other counties or attend FSQA
Testing on Monday June 5th from 8:30 am-12 pm at
the Extension Office.
DOG
Dog Classes have begun and will be held every Sunday
except June 18th and July 2nd at the Big Four Fair-
grounds in Nashua. Each dog class will be two hours
long. New members (1-3 years) will need to attend at
least 4 out of the 6 classes. Please contact the Exten-
sion Office at 641-394-2174 with questions.
HORSE
Horse Workouts have begun and will be held on June
3rd, June 17th and July 1st from 9 am-11 am at the
Fairgrounds in Nashua. Please watch the Chickasaw
County Extension Facebook Page and Chickasaw
County 4-H Facebook page for cancelations or up-
dates.

BEEF
A Beef Workshop will be held at Garth Griffin’s farm
(1899 Mission Ave, New Hampton) on June 3rd from 9
am –11 am. This workshop will cover preparing your
beef animals for the show with topics such as show-
manship and clipping.
SWINE/SHEEP/MEAT GOAT
A Swine/ Sheep/ Meat Goat workshop will take place
on June 13th at 6:30 pm at the Fairgrounds in Nashua.
This workshop will cover getting your animals ready for
the fair.
Auction News:
All youth participating in the Auction for 2017
Achievement Show:
All Market Animals will need to mark fair entry
with ‘yes or no’ if you plan to see in the auction.
You will have an hour after each show to scratch
your animal from the auction.
A personalized thank you card must be turned in to
the Extension Office before the auction checks will
given to the youth! It is important to thank our
buyers!
As you are meeting people or businesses this sum-
mer remember to tell them about the auction and
to invite them to come and support you!

RABBIT Champion and Reserve Champion Fryer and Pen of Three must stay at the Fairgrounds. Every family will be assigned an allotment of cages depending on their number of entries. All rabbits need to be tattooed by check in for the 2017 Achievement Fair.
A note from the Livestock Committee: Promote a positive image! County Fair is not only a time to have fun with friends and make memories, but also a great opportunity for the general public to see animal agriculture. We want to present the best experience possible for our visitors. Please plan on maintaining clean, dry conditions for your animals each day they are on the fairgrounds.
NEW FUN ACTIVITIES COMING TO FAIR!
New fun events are being planned by the 100 year Extension Planning Committee. These events include: Ag Lympics, Rooster Crowing Contest, Hog Calling Contest, Spin Art, His-torical Extension Display, Commodity Carnival, Balloon Man, Water Fun, and Scavenger Hunt plus many more. Look for a full schedule of all these events in the July newsletter.
**We need volunteers! Please spread the word! If you would like to be a volunteer at any of these events, please give us a call at the Extension Office 641-394-2174.
Clothing Exhibits
New for the 2017 Fair, we would like to invite all clothing participants to showcase their clothing exhibits. A special spot will be reserved for these exhibits in the static building. An invitation letter will be sent in June with more information to the clothing participants from Clothing and Communica-tions Day.
Working Exhibits / Share the Fun/ Educational Presentations
We are also inviting anyone to present a working exhibit, Share the Fun Act, or Educational Presentation on Sunday of the Fair. We especially encourage all State Fair winners from Communications Day to participate and showcase their tal-ent. If you would like to present your communications pro-ject, please let us know what you plan to present on by Fri-day July 14th.
An invitation letter will be sent in June to all Communica-tion participants from Clothing and Communications Day.
Join Us for a BBQ
Sunday, July 16th 5-7 pm at the Big Four Fairgrounds
Chickasaw County Beef Producers will be serving ham-burgers, baked beans, potato salad/chips, lemonade and coffee.
Ice Cream will be provided by the Farm Credit Services and Cake will also be provided by the Extension Office in honor of 100 years of Extension and Outreach in Chicka-saw County.
Please contact your 4-H leader to get your tickets.
Proceeds help support 4-H programs, so we encourage each family to sell at least 5 tickets….or more if you can!
We encourage everyone to stay for the awards program starting at 7 pm. We will be recognizing graduating Sen-iors, Graduating Clover Kids, announcing special livestock awards, and crowing the new Fair Queen.
Clover Kids
Don’t forget, Clover Kids ...You can show at the 2017 Achievement Fair too! Little Clovers may bring Agricul-ture, Natural Resources, Visual Arts, Photography, Animal Science, Science, Engineering, Food and Nutrition, and other Consumer Science Exhibits for static judging. Clover Kids in Kindergarten through 1st grade can enter up to 2 non livestock projects or up to 4 non livestock projects if they are in grades 2-3.
If you have just completed 3rd grade we welcome you back for a special graduation recognition during the awards program!
Celebrity Showmanship
Remember...there will be a BEEF Showmanship class
that is open to anyone that is 19 years of age or older
who is not currently an FFA or 4-H member. Partici-
pants will be judged based on their ability to show a
beef animal and may be asked questions by the beef
judge. Each participant will need to find a sponsor for
$100. The winner will receive a cash award, all other
proceeds will be directed towards the herdsmanship
awards and the 4-H program. An agreement form
must be signed prior to the day of the show, forms will
be available after June 15th.

2017 Queen Competition - Applicants WANTED!!! The Chickasaw County Big 4 Fair Board is looking for the next
Chickasaw County Fair Queen.
All young women ages 16-21 interested in representing
Chickasaw County are encouraged to apply.
Candidates will need to complete the application, attach a
picture, and the $25 sponsorship.
Ladies need not be in 4-H. This is open to all women actively
involved in any area in Chickasaw County.
Applications can be picked up at the ISU Extension & Out-
reach Office at 104 E Main St after May 5th and are due on
or before June 16th .
Candidates will be contacted and interviews will be planned
for June 19th.
This year to help celebrate 100 years of Extension, we are having an Extension/4-H float in both the Heartland Days pa-rade on June 9th and Water Over the Dam Days Parade in Nashua on June 24th.
We need 4-H youth and volunteers to help walk with Extension staff during these parades. We ask that you come with your 4-H spirit and wear your 4-H t-shirts, help hand out invitations to the annual BBQ at the fair, and of course hand out candy to the children . I encourage all clubs to participate in at least one parade this summer with 4-H and Extension Staff.

Farm Safety Day Camp
The Spring Farm Safety Program is for K-3 grade youth.
Registration forms were sent home through the school
for New Hampton and Fredericksburg Farm Safety Day
Camp. Registration forms can also be picked up at the
Extension Office. Farm Safety Day camp will be held on
June 14th in New Hampton, and June 21st in Fredericks-
burg from 9 am– 3 pm. Camp registrations for New
Hampton and Fredericksburg are due to the Extension
Office by June 2nd and 9th.
Wonderful Worms : K-3 Day Camp
Wiggly and wonderful worms hide in the ground
without making a sound but did you know there
are over 3,000 different kinds of earthworms?
What is the difference between red worms and
night crawlers? Observe, listen, and feel wonder-
ful worms during this camp. Youth will also have
the opportunity to create their very own ‘worm
bed’, go on a worm hunt and create their own
crafts! Wonderful Worms Day Camp will be held
on June 8th from 9 am– 3pm at the Ionia Public
Library and July 15th from 9 am– 3 pm at the Big
Four Fairgrounds in Nashua.

Cooking Up Science: 4-6 Day Camp
Does your 4th– 6th grader like to cook in the kitchen? Does your child often wonder why some foods turn
out and others do not? During this camp, youth will get the chance to examine and answer why doesn't
the food we bake always turn out? Youth will also get the opportunity to learn how different ingredients
will change foods and will try their hand at baking. If your child gets excited about baking, this camp is for
them! Cooking Up Science Day Camp will be held 9 am– 3 pm on June 15th at the United Methodist
Church in New Hampton and 9 am—3 pm on June 28th at the Fredericksburg Community Center.
County Council Applications
Do you want to be a leader in Chickasaw County? Would you like to create opportunities for fellow 4-H’ers while having fun?! Senior County Council is open to those in 9th-12th grade and the Intermediate County Council is open to those in 7th-8th grade in the 2017-2018 school year.
If you are interested, please fill out an application available at the Extension Office AFTER May 15th. Each appli-cant will be provided with an expectations sheet that will need to be signed along with the application. Appli-cations and the Expectation Sheet are due to the Extension Office no later than Friday, July 14th. All returning County Council members will need to complete the application materials also.
As a member of the Chickasaw County Council you will be required to attend most meetings along with imple-menting a leadership project, participation at fair and other activities throughout the 4-H year.
*Interviews for County Council will be conducted in late July or early August. All applicants will be asked to par-ticipate in an interview.*

Wave your 4-H Flag at the Iowa State Fair
Save the Date for 4-H Day at the Fair! On August 11, Iowa 4-H in partnership with the Iowa 4-H Foundation will be sponsoring a special day on the Grand Concourse. We will be promoting 4-H showcasing 4-H’ers and programs and connecting with alumni.
Pre-registered alumni will receive special benefits on Au-gust 11. The top three counties who register the highest number of alumni and friends will receive a contribution to their county: 1st: $500, 2nd: $250, 3rd: $100. Donkey Ball
New at the 2017 Fair: The Big Four Fairboard will be hosting Donkey Races that will be held on Saturday July 15th starting at 7 pm.
Riders must be at least 16 years of age and weigh less than 250lbs. There will be five heats with 10 rid-ers in each heat. Each rider will need to find a spon-sorship of at least $50.
If you are interested in donating money for this event or are interested in participating in Donkey Ball please contact a member on the Big Four Fairboard.

CHICKASAW COUNTY 4-H & FFA ACHIEVEMENT SHOW
OVERNIGHT LIABILITY RELEASE FORM DUE: JULY 1, 2017
Both sides of this form MUST be read, completed and on file with Extension Office staff at the Big Four Fairgrounds in Nashua, Iowa, dur-ing the Chickasaw County 4-H & FFA Achievement Show by anyone staying overnight at the fairgrounds.
NOTE: No exhibitors will stay in the barns overnight.
A dormitory is not provided on the fairgrounds nor chaperones for minors.
Adult supervision is required for youth staying on the fairgrounds.
Family campers are encouraged to use the camp grounds (designated areas on the fairground). However, you must make your own arrangements with the Fair Board.
The fair staff person on call will leave barn lights on overnight. Barn gates will be closed from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Reg-istered campers may stay overnight and must be on the grounds by 10:00 PM. Fair staff and/or security will call parents and/or law enforcement officials to remove rule violators from the fairgrounds.
PARENTAL PERMISSION and RELEASE OF LIABILITY:
My child(ren)_______________________________________________ has my permission to stay overnight at the Big Four Fairgrounds in Nashua during the 4-H & FFA Achievement Show. I understand that adult supervision is required and the 4-H or FFA member(s) must be in the designated overnight area as listed on the other side of this form by 10:00 PM. I release Extension staff, 4-H Youth Committee, and Extension Council from liability resulting from my child staying over at the fairgrounds. My child and I will assume responsibility for any damage to the fairground’s property or that of others.
I understand that if my child is not in the designated area by 10:00 PM it will be assumed that she/he will not be staying on the fairgrounds. If my child is found on the fairgrounds in violation of the overnight policy I will be called and asked to pick up my child from the grounds (no matter what time of the night) or will give consent for my child to drive home.
Overnighters may use the bathrooms after hours and return to their sleeping quarters. No horseplay, rough hous-ing, etc. in the restrooms or elsewhere on the fairgrounds will be tolerated! Violators will be sent home! The use of alcohol, tobacco and any other drug will not be tolerated and violators will be removed from the fairgrounds for the remainder of the fair and premiums will be forfeited. If a problem occurs with an animal the overnight on call person should be noti-fied so appropriate help can be obtained if needed and reported to staff in the morning. Animal exhibits will NOT be al-lowed to be exercised or washed from 9:30 PM until sunrise (6:00 AM).
I have read and agree to abide by the overnight rules of the Chickasaw County 4-H & FFA Achievement Show. Fur-ther, I hold harmless the Chickasaw County Achievement Show, its board, and members for any and all actions that take place during the course of the fair. I understand that there will be no legal protection for me or my camper during the fair and take full responsibility for any and all actions that are connected with myself, my family, and the legal officials before, during, or after the fair.
