1. PHYSICAL CHANGES• for girls age 8 until 16• for boys age 10 until 18

GROWING UP• changing from a child into an adolescent• process of becoming an adult• some of your friends grow up fast than you are• Your body has a mind of its own, and it will decide when
it's ready to develop
PUBERTY• is the process of physical change during which a child develops
into an adult capable of reproduction
1. HORMONES• puberty is controlled by hormones• acts on the testes in the boy and ovaries in the girl to produce the
changes of puberty• special chemical messengers that are released from endocrine
glands and travel around the body into the blood stream
2. HYPOTHALMUS• part of the brain and triggers the puberty• sends messages to the pituitary gland
3. PITUITARY GLAND• makes a number of hormones
4. 2 TYPES OF HORMONESa.) FSH (follicle-stimulating hormones)b.) LH (luteinzing hormones)
5. SEX HORMONES• work together with the growth hormones to cause growth in body

• girls grow taller than boys at age 8 to 11• boys grow taller two years later• girls reached their adult height at 17 years old• boys keeps growing until 19 years old

3. face shape• the nose and jaw become prominent and hairline draws further

4. Voice• boys voice become "broken" and then deeper
5. body hair• sexual organs, underarms , your face, arms and legs
6. pubic hair• grows around the girls and boys genitalia
7. underarm hair• starts to develop about 1-2 years after pubic hair• it is sparse and fine at first but eventually it will get darker, coarser
and thicker
8. body hair• grows on arms and legs• boys grows on chest and abdomen• shoulders, back of the hands and on the feet
9. girl's facial hair• eyebrows
10. boy's facial hair• top lip, cheeks and chin
PERIODS• is also called menstruation• it shows the body is ready to have babies• blood comes out of the woman's vagina• period lasts about 2 to 8 days• it starts between age 10 and 16 or 11 and 14
MENSTRUAL CYCLE• is the number of days of your period• the average is 4 weeks between the beginning and the
beginning of the next• some cycle vary to 35 days
SANITARY PROTECTION• is also called sanitary towel or napkin
1. You will feel discomfort• dragging pain, tiredness, feeling bloated or fainting
2. How to relieve pain• take painkillers• hot bath and hot water bottle held against the stomach• swimming, walking, dancing
CIRCUMCISION• a portion of the organ is either trimmed or opened up to
allow impurities to flow• age of 12 to 14
