Good morning and welcome to Sunset! I pray that your Thanksgiving was a time of rest, enrichment, and joy. We are also aware the holiday season can be painful for many who have lost loved ones. If this is you, we want to say you have a family at Sunset, and we love you!
What a wonderful Sunday we had last week as we welcomed Derrick Bostron and his daughters Madison and Emma to the Sunset family! Be sure to tell the Bostrons how happy we are they’ve decided to join us!
It’s hard to believe that today marks the beginning of December. Time certain-ly does fly by! For the next 3 Sunday mornings we are going to look at some vital events that led up to Jesus’ birth, with the 4th Sunday (Dec. 22nd) look-ing at the humble birth of Christ himself. With so many turning their attention to Jesus and his birth this time of year, we are going to answer the question of why it matters that he came to earth in the first place!
Be sure to come back tonight for the Area Wide Youth Night! Young people from several congregations will be at Sunset as we center our thoughts on the significance of worship.
To God be the glory! Phillip

Being a parent – there is always an opportunity to improve. I recently re-read an article I’d saved that listed the top ten mistakes Christian parents of teens made. This article was written by Jeff Strong back in 2010, here is #7 – “Permissive parenting”. ‘Whatever’ — It’s not just for teens anymore! The devil-may-care ambiva-lence that once defined the teenage subculture has now taken root as par-ents shrug their shoulders, ask, “What can you do?” and let their teens “figure things out for themselves.” I think permissive parenting (i.e., provid-ing little direction, limits, and consequences) is on the rise because many parents don’t know how to dialogue with and discipline their children. Maybe parents don’t know how to communicate with their teen. Maybe it’s because they don’t want to, because their own self-esteem is too tied up in their child’s perception of them, and they couldn’t handle having their teen get angry at them for actually trying to parent. Maybe it’s because many parents feel so overwhelmed, they can hardly think of pouring more energy into a taxing struggle. Whatever the reason, permissive parenting is completely irreconcilable with a Christian worldview. I certainly do not support au-thoritarian parenting styles, but if we practice a permissive parenting style we’re giving up our God-given responsibility to provide guidance, nurture, limits, discipline and consequences to our teen (all of which actually help our teen flourish long-term).” Do you know your parenting style? Maybe au-thoritarian, authoritative, permissive, or uninvolved. A follow up might be, do you know why this is your style?
