Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Programs
What is the (DL) Program? – Society dependent– A personal visit to a Chapter
from a “distinguished lecturer”– Offered by some Societies/Councils
The Benefits– Outstanding technical content at a meeting– Opportunity to expand the Chapter– Networking with Distinguished Lecturers.

Observations
Societies (38)Councils (7)Some (10) lack links to programdescriptions, and may lack programs
Societies and Councilsare very autonomous
Societies and Councilshave no requirement tohave a DL program
Great disparity inSocieties and their DL programs

Div IX Membership
Observations
Great disparity in Society sizeGreat disparity in Society focus
– more academic– more appliedDisparity in Society attitudes towards membershipGreat disparity in Society solvency
Society Memberships vs.IEEE Membership 1988 - 2008
Lost 65K since peak
410,000

Signal Processing Society
SPS is the fourth largest IEEE Society
Has the largest reserves
Covers “cost of membership” in itsmembership fee, but …
Membership has declined in line with Societies in general
Has a VP of Membership and Awards
Interest in “the practitioner”

SPS provides Chapter funds for:
– travel expense for DL speakers
– travel expense for other approvedspeakers
– “coffee breaks and social gatherings”
But only to active SPS Chapters

Arranging a DL speaker requires
– willingness of thespeaker
– approval of Chapter Coordinator
as spelled out thePowerPoint on SP Chapters

Being selected as a Distinguished Lecturer isa significant honor
– attracts distinguished scholars, especiallyin academia
– Attracts deeper topics that may not be as attractive to abroad audience

Usually, the speakershave a set of prepared talks that they offer
They are under no obligation to create anew talk to meet the interests of the audience
Important to think aboutthe match between thetalk and the audience …and level-set with the DL

People who volunteer to be Distinguished Lecturers, generally
– like to talk– like to travel
DLs from distant placesare not out of the question
To fit within the travelreimbursement maximum, visits to neighboring chapters may be arranged

In conclusion …
Some wonderful and famous scientists may be available to visit your Chapter
Their talks and their presence may help energize the Chapter meetings and invigorate the Chapter
A sponsoring Society may pay for this!
There may also be Society funding for:– other speakers– refreshments– other

In conclusion …
But, you have some work to do
Work with existing Society relationships– no Society likely to fund another’s DL
Select DL talks carefully to fit the interests of your Chapter; level-setting with the speaker may improve the fit
If the travel is expensive, you may needto arrange a multi-chapter visit toreduce the per-Chapter expense
Stay active in the view of that/those Societies with which you have relationships
– make your interests known, especially as they relate to practitioners
Consider being a joint Chapter– which increases your opportunities– many Society Fields of Interest may
overlap with your interests

In conclusion …
I regret the difficulties of dealing with thenumber and diversity of Societies, but …

Most Societies dohave Chapter Coordinators
They may help you..
Those Societies thathave professional staff often list staff contacts as well
