Minister’s letterDear Friends,

2

We are very much at the start of this special year as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of our present church building. It was a joy to welcome our new District Chair, Rev. Roger Walton, to lead worship in January and we look forward to the visits of several other guest preachers (many of them old friends) over the rest of the year. We are grateful to all those who have worked so hard to put the anniversary programme together. A great deal of time and effort has already been contributed by many people and we look forward to all those services, concerts and activities that are being planned.

We hope that this year will enable us both to look back and to look forward. It should be a time of encouragement as we reflect on what we have achieved and plan for what lies ahead. We receive encouragement through sharing in worship together, for our church building is primarily a place of worship. Encouragement also comes through fellowship and there are plenty of opportunities each week to share fellowship together. As well as all our church groups there are many other people of different ages who gather on our premises week by week in all sorts of ways. As people enter our building may they find it to be a place of both hope and peace.

We are the people of God, we are the living stones who are being built together by God. Part of the joy of belonging to the church family is the way in which we can give and receive support from each other as we seek to be God’s people in this place. Let us share his love with others and may whatever we do in this church encourage us to live as the people of God.

With best wishes, Mark

A New Year's Prayer (adapted from a prayer from MHA)

Dear God

Thank you that you make all things new. Thank you for all that you've allowed into our lives this past year, the good along with the hard things, which have reminded us how much we need you and rely on your presence filling us every single day.

We pray for your Spirit to lead us each step of this New Year; that you will guide our decisions and turn our hearts to desire you deeply above all else. We ask that you will open doors needing to be opened and close the ones needing to be shut tight and that you will help us release our grip on the things to which you’ve said “no”, “not yet”, or “wait”. Give us help to pursue you first, above every dream and desire you’ve put within our hearts.

We ask for your wisdom, for your strength and power to be constantly present within us. Make us strong and courageous for the road ahead. Let your gifts flow freely through us so that you will be honoured by our lives and that others will be drawn to you.

We pray that you will keep us far from the snares and traps of temptations; that you whisper in our ear when we need to run, and whisper in our heart when we need to stand our ground.

We pray for your protection over our families, friends and people that we care for. Surround us with your love, give us discernment and insight to understand your will, hear your voice and know your ways.

We confess our need for you…fresh…new…again. We ask that you make all things new, in our hearts, in our minds, in our lives, for this coming year. We pray for your refreshing spirit over us.

To you be glory and honour, in this New Year, and forever. Amen

WOMENS`S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

2018“All God's creation is very good”

You are invited to take part in the Women's World Day of Prayer on Friday 2nd March 2018. There will be a service at The Grove starting at 2.00 pm.During the service, written by the Christian women of Suriname, all who are present will be invited to write down one practical thing they are prepared to do to care for and preserve God's wonderful creation.

As we pray with and for the people of Suriname on 2nd March, we shall be part of a great wave of prayer encircling the globe, starting as the sun rises over Samoa, continuing as it makes its way around the earth, and ending some 36 hours later as the sun sets over American Samoa. Here in the British Isles, some 6000 services will be taking place.

This service is for all, men included!

Together travel on: conversations on the wayWe have been together as an expanded circuit for two and a half years. To be good stewards of the gifts of time, talent, buildings and resources that God has given us means we should review how we use what we have.

To this end our circuit staff have arranged a meeting to share, listen and learn. The Grove is grouped with Headingley and Cookridge and will meet on 20th March at 7pm in our Wesley Road church. It will be facilitated by an ordained member of staff (other than Mark) and a circuit steward will listen in.

Circuit staff will collate all responses throughout April and report to the May Circuit meeting. Our Yorkshire District is holding a Pilgrimage event on May 20th. This will bring together thoughts from a wider area.

Our Circuit proposals will be presented in September 2018, church councils will be discussing them in the autumn and implementation will be from September 2019.

If you have any input to this process please pass it on to any of the stewards.

Thank you. . .together on the journey!Phil Maud

Kath Ashby writes:After an inspiring Service led by our own Minister, the 2018 Celebration year began with hope and challenges. We have so many people to thank for the planning of events for the next year.

- A special thank you to Christine Mathers for all her research and hard work in producing “Moving Forward 1868 – 2018”. It makes an interesting and informative read. Thank you to the subscribers who enabled us to print the booklet. Copies are still available for £3.

- We thank Peter Mawson too for his efforts in producing our programme of events for the year.

- A huge thank you must go to all who worked so very hard to make the Celebration meal a really happy occasion for us all. Your efforts were greatly appreciated by all on the actual day, and to groups who served cake throughout the week. As a result £300 was raised for Shirley Crawford’s Village Children Appeal.

- I believe we are about to have a year of joyful fellowship and outreach and already you have helped to start it off with awareness to others in need and with an example of what can be achieved, as we all work together.

To God be the Glory

Creation: A Celebration . . . . . . .Help neededIn Peter Mawson's article about our anniversary year (Vine Dec/Jan) he wrote about the above exhibition which we are having on loan from the Bible Society.

This is an excellent opportunity for the Grove that is rarely granted by the Bible Society to individual churches, to display a vast range of multi media exhibits on this important theme.  In their experience the Bible Society anticipates that the exhibition could attract many interested visitors from the immediate neighbourhood and beyond.

We are exhibiting this in our church from 10th May until 31st May. As the panels are valuable and precious we will need to have a number of volunteers to be in the church during its opening hours on a rota system.

In the March Vine I will be giving further details about opening times and how you can help out by volunteering to be in the church during these times.

Thank you.                                     Kay Bassett

Lower Wortley Methodist Church

'You're the one by Matalan.' That’s the usual comment about Lower Wortley Methodist Church which is indeed opposite the car park behind said clothing establishment just off the inner Ring Road. There is of course more to us although it has been helpful over the years for parking!

LW Methodist began life in 1884 as Methodist Free Church and has over the years had a couple of refurbs. Our church certainly looks old with its grey imposing stonework but thanks to our property people over the years we are still standing!  We are particularly happy with our clock which can light up even the dreariest of winter evenings.

We are a relatively small congregation of around 25+ each week but a good number of children which we are blessed with - around 6/7. Therefore we have a junior church each Sunday which works well - my four year old tells me that anyway!

Due to our child component we have been trialling a worship trial for a few months now which aims to be inclusive of everyone for the first part of the service. This is alongside two other churches.

The building is used fairly well through the week, with a foodbank, two Mums and Toddler groups, card class (all welcome on a Monday evening!) being some of our activities. We also have various events through the year as fundraising events and Guiseley Brass Band are a regular in December!

On a Saturday another group uses our premises for their own worship which is helpful for them. It brings its challenges of course but good relations are kept!

Mission of course is a priority and we would love to increase our membership as well. It is an ageing congregation. For prayer I

10

would appreciate a thought as to the roles we have and how these could all be filled....and not all by one or two people!Sure we aren’t unique in this though!

Please do come and worship with us if you would like to. You would be more than welcome. . .kick off is 10:30 each Sunday!! Rev Dan Woodhouse is currently our minister.

I hope that gives you an idea of what we are about. And remember there is always that Matalan to see....as you know we are right by it!!!

Paul ClokeFrom Pharaoh to Freedom

A musical demonstration of the relationship between the Jewish Passover and the Christian celebration of Holy Communion.

This dramatic musical will be sung by The Grove choir as the first of the events in the series which celebrates our special anniversary year. It will be held in the Grove church on Sunday 18th March starting at 2.30 pm. Entry is free, with a retiring collection for our work and mission. This is your only chance to take part in a unique experience! There will be no repeat performance at the Grove.

Part of the musical was used within the 2017 Good Friday service, and was very much appreciated by the congregation. The musical is lively, but at times also very moving. It is by Roger Jones, Britain's foremost producer of church musicals, with more than twenty musicals to his name.

The story starts with the Israelites in captivity in Egypt. It tells of their attempts to secure their release, and of the plagues. It tells of how the first-born sons of the Egyptians were slain overnight, but the Israelites were passed over because the blood of the lambs was painted around their door frames. It tells of how they escaped, and travelled day and night through the desert. It tells of how this release from slavery has been celebrated ever since, and how

11

Christians remember the Last Supper, the Passover meal for Jesus and his disciples.

Don't miss this once only performance!Scouts NewsAs you will all be aware this is our Scout Group's 90th anniversary and in October we enjoyed an anniversary camp at Aldwark water centre. The weekend was attended by over 100 of our members across all the sections and all had fun on the water, from the very youngest to the very oldest.

In November we attended the Annual Remembrance Sunday Parade at the cenotaph which was well attended. As next year will be the one hundredth anniversary of the end of WW1 I expect a really good turn out and invite any members of the church to join us, if not on the parade, at the cenotaph.

We also held a winter sleepover in the Grove Centre at the end of November in aid of Water Aid, again a full group event which all enjoyed.

The scouting year is warming up now and there will be many camps and other events as the year progresses, however none of these events would be possible without the voluntary leaders that we rely upon. Being a scout leader is a voluntary position and a number of leaders and assistant leaders are looking to leave which is putting pressure on us being able to provide first class activities for our young people. This is being felt particularly hard in our Scout section. The Monday Scout troop is currently without a leader and in the very near future Thursday troop will be losing all their assistant leaders. We are desperate for new leaders and anyone who would like to offer their help knows someone who to would like to help should contact myself or Keith Whitham as soon as possible.

Leaders are a rare breed who give of their time and energy. They also have jobs outside of scouting and Amy Richards our Thursday Beaver leader was recently awarded radiographer of the year 2017 in Yorkshire and North Trent

12

region by the Society of radiographers at a ceremony in London. I am sure you will all join in with me in congratulating her on such a prestigious award.

Finally a little plug. This year we will not be producing a Scout panto, however we will be producing a 24-hour gang show on the 24th March. This is a joint production by both Scouts and Guides at the Grove and will include young people from all uniformed sections at the Grove. Put the date in your diary and get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. John Kitching. Mel and Dorina Overson,, in conjunction with Dalesman Coaches, have organised the following and wondered if any-one would like to join them.

15

Tanzania.Farmers in this region generally own small plots of land with an average farm size of just 0.8 hectares. Coffee is the main cash crop, grown alongside small quantities of food crops, including matoke (green bananas), cassava, beans, yams, maize and vegetables. Some also keep livestock (cattle, pigs & chickens). It is a poor region with limited access to clean water, health care and education. Farmers have invested their Fairtrade Premium in these areas and in supporting farmers to improve the quality of coffee so that they can attract a better price. “There are times I have really struggled and have had to work extra hard,” she says. ‘”I had to juggle 24 hours a day when the children were younger to put food on the table…. With Fair Trade we have improved facilities here and enhanced quality and production - We couldn’t have achieved them without it.”The Grove Methodist Mission Project 2018.

What an honour to share in the Grove 150th Anniversary Service on the 21st of January, as we celebrated the opening of our current building with a superb service, lunch and legendary Grove fellowship. It was so special, sitting in the same beautiful building where my grand-parents, parents, brothers and their wives and our children and one grandchild, have met to worship and live life together over the years.

As memories flooded my mind, I thanked God for my Maud Family and my Grove Family - so many wonderful people who have played their part in the plan God has for my life.

When I was 7 yrs old, in afternoon Sunday School in the New Street building, a visiting missionary showed us grainy slides of her work loving African orphans. I believe this was when God planted a seed in me, which was to impact my life in ways I could not possibly have imagined.

For the next 7 yrs, I spent every Sunday afternoon collecting JMA money from congregation, family, friends and neighbours, to send to missionaries helping African babies and children.

When I was 17 yrs old, a team of students from Cliff Bible College came to lead a weekend Mission, some staying at our home. I was blown away by their enthusiasm, their love for Jesus and the way

16

they talked of having a personal relationship with God as their Father. I realised they had something different in their lives that I hadn’t got and I accepted that Jesus had died for my sins on the cross so that I could be forgiven and experience a personal relationship with Father God and learnt that He has a plan for my life.

At the age of 18, I was a student at Cliff College and responded to a sermon when God called me to go to Africa to live and love His people there.

After a few twists and turns along the way - God’s plan for my life, which started and grew in The Grove, nurtured by so many amazing Sunday school teachers, youth leaders, Guide leaders, and members of the Church Family, FINALLY came to fruition.God opened the door for me to go and love His beautiful children of Northern Uganda, with the love that He has poured into my life over the years.

I am so blessed that 2018 is the 10th year of loving my Ugandan family and it is an honour to  know that, during this special Anniversary year, we will be partnering together to support six projects that I am privileged to be involved with.

Together we will have the opportunity to make a HUGE difference in the lives of so many.Thank you. Mamma Shirls
