The Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome Allen Houk as president for the 2013 year. Houk has been on the board of directors for three years and has had his own CPA business located in Grove City. Houk is eager to begin his term as president and has three specific goals that he would like to achieve this year: 1. Increased Chamber partner- ship with other organizations in Grove City. 2. Evaluation of the board and staff to see how the Chamber can be most efficient in the future. 3. Utilization of Chamber re- sources in the most efficient way possible to benefit members. Houk hopes to work with board members in defining their goals for 2013. He is quick to credit current board members as instrumental in motivating his decision to take this position. “I’ve had the benefit of working with great board members who have helped me shape my thoughts and ideas for the past three years,” says Houk. He wants to encourage cur- rent members to get involved with the Chamber and its educational programs. “As a cham- ber, we need to provide our members with educational training,” says Houk. “Within our membership as a whole, we have a lot of knowledge and talent in all aspects of business. We have members who are willing to share their insights and experi- ences, and we need to do more to promote these types of connec- tions.” Houk and wife Christine have been living in Grove City for twenty years. He opened his practice in 2001 and has been at his current location at 4084 Broadway for two years. He cites Grove City’s poten- tial for small business growth as the reason that he decided to open his business in Grove City. His favorite Chamber events include the annual Farmer’s Market and board meet- ings. Some business owners may not be very optimistic about the year 2013, but Houk encourages these owners and their employees to get more involved with the Chamber. “There is nothing wrong with reaching out and asking the Cham- ber for help,” says Houk. “Even non- members are encouraged to reach out to us during difficult times. For example, we have a small business consultant who is available by ap- pointment to meet with members in the Chamber office at no charge. What a valuable resource!” With Allen Houk at the lead, the Chamber board of directors and staff look forward to a promising and exciting 2013. The Chamber of Commerce is pleased to welcome Allen Houk as president for the 2013 year. Houk has been on the board of directors for three years and has had his own CPA business located in Grove City.

Houk is eager to begin his term as president and has three specific goals that he would like to achieve this year:

1. Increased Chamber partner-ship with other organizations in Grove City.

2. Evaluation of the board and staff to see how the Chamber can be most efficient in the future.

3. Utilization of Chamber re-sources in the most efficient way possible to benefit members.

Houk hopes to work with board members in defining their goals for 2013. He is quick to credit current board members as instrumental in motivating his decision to take this position.

“I’ve had the benefit of working with great board members who have helped me shape my thoughts and ideas for the past three years,” says Houk.

He wants to encourage cur-rent members to get involved with the Chamber and its educational programs.

“As a cham-ber, we need to provide our members with educational training,” says Houk. “Within our membership as a whole, we have a lot of knowledge and talent in all aspects of business. We have members who are willing to share their insights and experi-ences, and we need to do more to promote these types of connec-tions.”

Houk and wife Christine have been living in Grove City for twenty years. He opened his practice in 2001 and has been at his current location at 4084 Broadway for two years. He cites Grove City’s poten-tial for small business growth as the reason that he decided to open his business in Grove City. His favorite

Chamber events include the annual Farmer’s Market and board meet-ings.

Some business owners may not be very optimistic about the year 2013, but Houk encourages these owners and their employees to get more involved with the Chamber.

“There is nothing wrong with reaching out and asking the Cham-ber for help,” says Houk. “Even non-members are encouraged to reach out to us during difficult times. For example, we have a small business consultant who is available by ap-pointment to meet with members in the Chamber office at no charge. What a valuable resource!”

With Allen Houk at the lead, the Chamber board of directors and staff look forward to a promising and exciting 2013.

There are Career-Technical programs located within each of the four high schools and the South-Western Career Academy (SWCA) of the South-Western City School District (SWCS).

Each Career-Technical pro-gram incorporates a unique work-based experience within its course of study. One such work-based experience is the Paid Internship Experience (PIE) program. Through the internship experience, stu-dents have the opportunity to work for a minimum of 15 hours per week in a business or industry related to their Career-Technical program. This experience takes place during the second semester of the student’s senior year.

Tigerpoly Mfg., Inc. is a partner in the Paid Intern-ship program. Mark Bobulski, Plant Manager, noted, “Paid internships are important to us in that the subject mat-ter taught in the classroom can be applied to the real life manufacturing environ-ment. Internships provide a company the ability to judge, firsthand, the quality of a future employee in the actual situation in which they will work. This interaction affords

the company the ability to ‘grow their own’ skill sets in internal candidates for future positions.”

Geraldo Vazquez, a 2012 graduate of the SWCA Dental Assisting program, par-ticipated in the program last school year. He is currently a dental assistant at Ohio Urgent Dental Care in Grove City. Vazquez reflected, “The Paid Internship Experience opened many opportunities for me to better my career and continue learning about my chosen field.” In order to qualify to participate in PIE, senior students must meet certain criteria includ-

ing excellent attendance and grades. There are traditionally about 75 students participat-ing in the program with more than 50 business partners.

Levy & Associates, LLC, a creditor rights’ law firm, “is proud that its association with the South-Western City Schools provides students the opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom within a diversified law firm.”

SWCS Career-Technical programs include: Account-ing and Finance, Automotive, Business and Administrative Services, Construction Tech-nologies, Cosmetology, Cu-linary Arts, Dental Assisting, Early Childhood Education, Health Technologies, Interac-tive Media Design, Marketing Technology, Materials Joining, PR and Event Management, and Pre-Engineering.

There are currently nearly 1,000 students enrolled in Career-Technical programs within the South-Western City School District.

To become a partner or get more information on Career-Technical programs, please contact Sherry Minton at 801-3005 or [email protected].

When Tara Borghese was looking for a home-based business that would give her the ability to help people as well as earn a profit, she turned to Body by Vi.

“I was looking for something to help people, not just to make money. I wanted to make a difference,” said Borghese.

Promoting a 90-day health challenge, Body by Vi, a branch of Visalus Sciences, is a collec-tion of nutritional meal shakes and supplements that inspire users to get fit, get healthy and build lean muscle, along with other health goals. Cus-tomers can pick specific kits to tailor the 90 days to their specific goals. Body by Vi also promotes regular exercise and healthy eating overall.

Each shake has only 90 calories and is diabetic-friendly, in addition to being lactose- and gluten-free. The program is also cost effective, as 60 shakes costs $99.

For those using the program, there are incentives to share with friends. Borghese recently earned the title of Regional Director and is part of their BMW

incentive program. Body by Vi calls what they do “relationship marketing” and Borghese gets most of her business through referrals and home-based presentations.

Referring three friends allows you to acquire your meals for free and the system can be used by all ages. This sys-tem has been used by marathon runners to

train, as well as working mothers looking to shed a few pounds. Body by Vi also has donated over 4 million meals to home-less shelters and other charities.

“If you haven’t looked into home-based busi-ness lately, check this out. It is flexible and goes along with a lot of in-dustries,” said Borghese. “Timing is everything and this company is growing like crazy.”

The Body by Vi mes-sage is simple: You join the challenge and then share your story. Bor-ghese’s business is grow-ing by the day, thanks to the hottest health plan on the market.

Check out Body by Vi at http://taraborghese.myvi.net/ or contact Tara at [email protected] or (614) 519-9167.
