The Conference Board of Pensions is pleased to announce a reduced healthcare billing rate to the local churches for 2019. The 2019 blended rate of $1536.00 a month for full time appointed clergy which was communicated earlier in the fall has been reduced to $1385.00 a month. This is a savings of $151.00 a month to the local church.

The CBOP is continuously evaluating what steps and measures we can take to reduce healthcare costs to the local church. It has been determined the CBOP is in a position at this time to absorb the cost of administrative expenses and healthcare premiums for our special participants; surviving spouses, CPP disability, student pastors and retirees with 40 years service.

The CBOP recognizes the financial challenges facing many of our local churches and remains committed to identifying ways to offer affordable, quality healthcare to our clergy and their families.

Questions or concerns please contact Kathleen Lasky at: [email protected]

The CBOP wishes you and your family a wonderful, blessed Christmas!

UNITED METHODIST HUMAN SERVICES5 X 1000 – A small way to make a big difference!

United Methodist Human Services serves all of Cambria County and adjoining parts of Somerset, Bedford, and Clearfield Counties. Through faith in Christ and community partnerships, they develop relationships that empower and transform individual lives, families, and future generations.

You can spend your hard-earned money a lot of different ways. We all want to do good with our money, but sometimes there isn’t much left at the end of the month.

What if you could make a difference without breaking the bank?

$5 doesn’t seem like much, right? But just imagine if you could multiply it by 1000. The impact would be undeniable! We’re looking for 1000 people to commit to changing lives.

Your $5 monthly gift will help put shoes on children’s feet and food on the tables of families and senior citizens. You’ll help provide hats, gloves, diapers, hygiene kits, and necessary care items to those who need them. You’ll help empower people struggling in economic instability to build brighter, more secure futures for themselves and their families. This just might be the best $5 you spend each month! CLEANING BUCKETS NEEDED!Cleaning buckets drop off location in Johnstown is Elton: Zion UMC. Please contact the church to make sure someone will be there to accept the buckets before dropping off. Church office phone number is (814) 266-1512.

Because of the widespread flooding that we are receiving throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania, specifically around Pittsburgh suburbs, we have exhausted our cleaning buckets at the Eastbrook mission barn.

On behalf of the disaster response ministries and the Eastbrook Mission Barn, I am issuing an urgent request for cleaning buckets and hygiene kits; with priority being placed on cleaning buckets.

If each district would be able to collect 100 cleaning buckets this would alleviate concerns about having enough supplies in this initial response.

Funds for cleaning buckets could also be forwarded to the Eastbrook Mission Barn. Funds for general disaster response should be forwarded to the conference treasure. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call 814-442-5899.

Thank you for everything you are doing and for all of your support, we continue to seek God’s will as we help those who have been affected by natural disaster.Peace and blessings, Calvin CookWPA Disaster Response Ministries

From Pat, Renee and Brad in body of invitation:

“Based on more than 45 years of research in the psychology of human behavior and motivation, and more 35 years of experience working with organizations worldwide, including The United Methodist Church, it is our belief DOMS will prove invaluable to us individually as Christ-followers, our relationships with others, and the Church, including the local church.”

From Bishop Cynthia in body of invitation:

“I am always excited about the opportunity to support pastors and laity who yearn to learn more about how to be in authentic, meaningful relationships with one another and their communities in the midst of our diversity.”

Quotes from Participants attending January 4-5, 2019 training (Participants included members of Conference Staff, BOM Executive Team, Connectional Leadership Table Executive Team, Delegation to Special Session of General Conference)

“The training was particularly insightful and helped me realize a few important (and sometimes difficult) facts about myself. I hope to use these tools to change some circumstances in my life I didn’t realize I had the power to change.”

“I went home and focused on my inward vs. outward mindset – made some usually rocky paths smoother.”

“Some of the tools are good reminders of known-principles, if not revolutionary.”

“I think my biggest take-away will be trying to be intentional about thinking about and seeing others first.”

“Being able to see real-world, practical applications of the concepts is invaluable.”

“Good opportunity for personal reflection and fine tuning of relationship skills.”

“I appreciated the practical application of the material. The tools, conversation, and break-out sessions could all be applied to my ministry setting and personal life. Thank you for creating a non-threatening setting and atmosphere in which to learn and grow.”

“I would like to bring it for our entire church staff.”

“The workshop put me face-to-face with myself. I see the areas where I need to work, the people I’m neglecting by not living up to my potential, not focusing on them (outwardly) but putting myself first (inwardly) and limiting both myself and others.”

“This was an incredible way to get to know other leaders and grow together.”

“This workshop provided inspiration to bring more intentionality and consciousness to thinking beyond myself.”

Quotes from Participants attending September 7-8 training (Participants included Bishop Cynthia, District Superintendents, District Lay Leaders)

“This program helps me treat those with whom I am in relationship with respect and kindness.

“It opened my eyes to my own thinking and how some of my ways were inward thinking. It will help me to think more outward that I have in the past.”

“It would be great to see this training expand.”

“An outward mindset is critical for today’s church.”

“As far as recommending this study, I would say it is most beneficial and recommend to others to take it. Learn about getting out of your box!”

Prayer Initiative All laity and clergy who feel called to prayer are invited to be part of a special Conference-wide prayer initiative which begins in January and leads up to the 2019 annual conference session. Gatherings for prayer will be held in five different locations around Western PA each month from January through May. Please see information below.

New Prayer MinistriesThis January we are beginning two different prayer ministries. The first is a 40-Days of Prayer for the General Conference taking place in February. There will be more information coming about that.

This information is about the second prayer initiative, the Conference Prayer Ministry. Each month there will be 5 prayer gatherings from Jan-May gatherings near the 5 “centers” of our Annual Conference. The five centers (St. Marys, Oakdale, Punxsutawney, Saegertown and Somerset) are all areas that everyone in our AC can reach in an hour (or an hour and half) of driving.

If you can, please contact your churches and lay leadership of the following Conference Prayer nights. Each night begins at 6:30 and will run about an hour and a half (6:30-8).

What do the facts say?- Conflict theorists often use three terms: Peacekeeping, Peacemaking, and Peacebuilding- PEACEKEEPING means keeping people from attacking each other by placing neutral soldiers

– peacekeepers – from the UN or a group of neutral nations. The soldiers do nothing to settle the conflict.

- PEACEMAKING is the process of forging a settlement between the disputing parties.- PEACHBUILDING is a process that facilitates the establishment of durable peace to prevent

the recurrence of violence by addressing root causes and effects of conflict reconciliation, institution building, and political as well as economic transformation.

What do you say?Take Action for justice…Support and promote Peace with Justice Sunday, one of the six special Sundays that provides funding for peace with justice programs in your Annual Conference and the Church and Society Peace with Justice Program.

We are excited to welcome Rev. Howard Greenfield who will lead a Spiritual Formation Retreat, January 27-29, 2019. This retreat will focus on the unavoidable losses we experience in life and ministry. Participants will engage in discussion and application of Dr. M Craig Barnes book, When God Interrupts - Finding New Life Through Unwanted Change. Our retreat leader, Rev.   Greetings from the mountaintop!

The good news is that you can either view the brochure online, or get one in the mail. The brochure is at the printers, and if you attended camp in the past couple of years, your family will get one in the mail as soon as it is finished. Please feel free to pass it on to your family and friends! If you need extra copies of the brochures to share, please call the Jumonville office (724) 439-4912 and we will mail them to you, or directly to your friends if you give us their contact information. Brochures will also be sent to the churches, if you need more copies for your Youth Group.

Feel free to check out the 2019   Summer Camp Schedule  on the Jumonville website. Remember you can register online, so you don't have to wait until you get your brochure in the mail.

Hope to see you on the Jumonville mountaintop this summer!

Conference Special Appeal – At the Lake Ministries

At the Lake Ministries is faithfully dedicated to offering our brothers and sisters in Christ who live with a disability a space in which to foster relationships and build community through faith-based, specialized fishing experiences on Lake Erie. This site has been established to financially support the development of this new fishing ministry and refurbish our vessel, JoAnn M. We can’t do this without the support of the WPAUMC Congregations.

Individuals and organizations external to WPAUMC can make an online contribution using their bank account or credit card by clicking the purple button below; Individuals affiliated with WPAUMC are encouraged to give through their local church. Churches can also contribute online; however, they should continue to use the Local Church Remittances page.
