Explore Iowa’s oldest city...

Our first permanent settler, Julien Dubuque, arrived here in 1785 and established a close relationship with the Meskwaki Indian Tribe that lead to a growing trade market, attracting more settlers. After being chartered in 1837, industry in Dubuque grew very rapidly. Initially known for fur trading and lead mining, settlers brought new business such as button making, boat construction and mill working.

A great way to explore Dubuque’s rich history is through a narrated tour of our community with a local historian. Our Historic House Tour and Progressive Dinner gives guests the opportunity to learn about some of our early settlers as they dine at a variety of locations in our community; costumed docents will also greet the group at some locations.

The Fenelon Place Elevator is one of Dubuque’s oldest treasures. It rests on the side of a bluff in downtown Dubuque and is the shortest, steepest railway in the world. Surrounding the entrance to the elevator, your group will find retail stores, a coffee shop, sweet treats and more. It is a must visit area for any visitor to the community.

The Shot Tower is the last remaining lead shot tower standing west of the Mississippi River and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Dubuque’s Old Jail Museum, which is an 1857 jail that has very unique artifacts from Dubuque County, was once “home” to Robert Leroy Parker, better known as Butch Cassidy. “Mae Capone” also comes back to life in Dubuque as she tells the story of the life she lived with her infamous husband Al Capone, who utilized the Hotel Julien Dubuque as a hide out from law enforcement.

LIKE TO HEAR HOW IT’S MADE?DO YOU HAVE 156 YEARS?

In our small village of 711 folks (750 around happy hour) fishing stories, tall tales and history lessons are best told - cold one in hand.

The Historic Potosi Brewery graciously adorned Main Street from 1852 to 1972. It survived prohibition and has witnessed world wars and lunar landings until the increased presence of national beer brands forced closure in 1972.

Today, thanks to an agressive restoration initiative, the facility has been preserved and reopened by the Potosi Brewery Foundation, a non-profit organization founded in 2000.

We hope all this history talk is making you thirsty because visitors can once again sample craft beers, dine on our beer-influenced entrees and peruse three museums housed under the cozy confines of a single roof. We like to think of it as a bar that looks like a museum. Or a museum that looks like a bar.

The National Brewery MuseumTM

Spanning two and a half floors in the Potosi Brewery Company, this world class museum was created by the Potosi Brewery Foundation and the American Breweriana Association to inform and for the enjoyment of all collectors, brewery professionals and the public.

All displays are ABA members’ collections that are rotated approximately every six to twelve months in order to offer something new for visitors on each visit to the museum and allow as many individual collectors as possible to display their prized artifacts.

Great River Road Interpretive Center and Transportation MuseumDiscover the graceful Mississippi when you explore The Great River Road Interpretive Center.

A Stroll through the Potosi Brewing Company Transportation Museum reveals the evolution of beer transport from horse drawn wagon and steamboats to railway and delivery trucks throughout the last century.

The Potosi Brewing Company RestaurantHere in Potosi, WI, visitors can once again sample a fine selection of our craft beers in our Potosi Brewing Company Restaurant or outdoor beer garden. Our restaurant’s uniqe atmosphere, fine dining and flowing spring beneath the restaurnt floor, channel the dynamic energy of an 1850’s brewery.

Not to be overlooked is our handcrafted bar designed by local artist, Gary David. This distinctive piece fashioned out of walnut, oak and maple pays homage to the history of out unique brewery and community.
