Introduction to 3D printing

3D-printing is a state of art technology that involves the process of reproducing three dimensional objects of any geometry from a digital file done by a 3D printer under the control of a computer. The process encompasses additive processes whereby a number of layers of materials are successively laid down until the entire object is created. The layers can be eventually seen as small slices of material.

3D objects are those that have length, width and height.

Applications of 3D printing.

3D printing has many applications that include It is used in metal casting industries to create ornamental objects and

jewelry both from hard plastics and metals.

It is applied in architectural engineering to create various machine parts, small single- used objects and fittings such as bolts and nuts.

In education, it avail teachers with visual aid objects that effectively helps to explain given concepts. It also promotes model learning while encouraging active participation by students.

The process in also applied in geospatial science. Here, 3D models are created that help geospatial scientists to communicate effectively among each other.

In healthcare and medicine, the technology is used to create replacement knees, hip joints and false teeth. This is an increasingly vital area in the human development.

Applications of 3D printing. 3D printing in used by manufacturers in the

design process, rapid prototyping, to create prototypes for manufacturing and research purposes. Alongside rapid prototyping, 3D printing is also used in rapid manufacturing where companies produce ready-made goods for their customers.

3D printing is used because of high quality and would help people to get a better overview of the product that you are working on.

For example, engineers use 3D- Printing to help them.

How does it work?

It all starts with making a virtual design of the object you want to create. This virtual design is made in Computer Aided Design file using a 3D modeling program for the creation of a totally new object or with the use of a 3D scanner to copy an existing object. This scanner makes a 3D digital copy of an object and puts it into a 3D modeling program.
