NARENDRA MODI : THE RISING

No politician in independent India has been demonised in such a relentless manner as Narendra Modi & no politician has withstood it with as much resilience & courage as him, notwithstanding the entire central government, influential sections of the media machinery & civil society arraigned against him . Here is the look at the rise of Narendra Modi and his political career.

September 17, 1950Narendra Damodardas Modi is born in the ancient city of Vadnagar in present-day Gujarat into a Hindu family. As a youth, he worked in his family's tea stall, according to a biography

Page 9: Group conflicts with in bjp

1987Modi joins the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as the fledgling party tapsinto the growth of Hindu nationalism across India. The BJP wins amajority in Gujarat in 1995 and Modi quickly rises up the ranks. 2001Modi gets his big break when Keshubhai Patel steps down as GujaratChief minister in the wake of the January earthquake that killedthousands of people. Modi is selected as Patel's replacement & hasremained in power ever since, becoming Gujarat's longest-serving chiefminister. February 27, 2002Riots break out after 59 passengers, mostly Hindu pilgrims, die in atrain fire in the town of Godhra in Gujarat. At least 1,000 people, mainlyMuslims, are killed. Modi, as chief minister, is accused by critics of notdoing enough to stem the riots and even quietly encouraging the ---allegations he has strongly denied and which have never been proved. 2005Washington denies Modi a travel visa for religious intolerance, causinguproar in India.

October 2008Modi persuades Tata Motors to move its factory to build its low-costNano car to Gujarat from West Bengal after protests from farmers overland compensation, a sign of his business-friendly approach to politics. February 2012A Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has been appointed by India'sSupreme Court, says investigators found no evidence against Modi in a2002 riots case. October 22, 2012British High Commissioner James Bevan sits down with Modi to discussbusiness and investment in a landmark meeting that ends the UK's 10Year diplomatic boycott after three British citizens were killed in the2002 riots. December 20, 2012Narendra Modi wins a third successive term as chief minister of Gujarat, with the BJP getting 115 of the state assembly's 182 seatsagainst 61 for the Congress. The BJP also won four assembly seats in byelections held in 2013.

June 9, 2013Modi is chosen to head the BJP's campaign in general elections due in2014, a position that could make him the party's candidate for primeminister. A day later, rival leader Lal Krishna Advani resigns fromBJP posts, exposing deep rifts in the party. Advani backtracks laterthat week. June 16, 2013Nitish Kumar, head of the Janata Dal (United), pulls out of a 17year-old alliance with the BJP after the party's decision to anointModi as its standard-bearer for the general elections.

NARENDRA MODI A PROBLEM OR OPPORTUNITY

FOR BJPPromotion of Narendra Modi ,BJP ‘s controversial son as a head ofparty’s election campaign committee for 2014 polls made it amply clearthat Gujarat chief minister will probably lead party for 2014 generalelections. This appointment itself elicited sharp reactions both withinthe BJP & outside BJP resulting in the eruption of noise of BJP’SInfighting . Modi bluster is not music to the ears of the BJP brass becauseit complicates the party's urgency to project a cohesive leadership &rope in more allies to expand the NDA & take on the Congress-led UPAin the approaching elections. For once, the BJP leadership was scenting power in Delhi given the multiplecrises& image meltdown of the UPA. Yet, Modi's unprecedented & aggressiveprojection of himself as prime minister-inwaiting created a simmeringtension among BJP leaders, rifts with existing allies and roadblocks to ropingin new pre-poll partners. The irony is that Modi is also BJP's most visible, popular and successful leader. In other words, Modi poses a problem &opportunity for the BJP.

CONFLICTS WITHIN BJP UNDER Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi as we discussed earlier is both problem as well asopportunity for BJP as a leader. The divisional aspect of his personaresulted in the winding off the bundles of conflicts and resistancewithin BJP for various reasons. The prominent ones are discussed asUnder :-

ADVANI’S REVOLT OVER MODI:-

The conflict b/w Narendra Modi ‘s Camp and L.K ADVANI ‘s camp isdeeply rooted and is one of the biggest cause of many conflicts takingplace in the party. The relationship b/w Modi & Advani started turning sour specially after the Advani’s trip to Pakistan in 2005 where heappreciated Jinnah and as result of which he has to quit from partypresident post under the pressure of RSS in late 2005.Since then Modi started to distance himself from his mentor & createdspace for himself in Party and became the poster boy for Hindutva

Page 14: Group conflicts with in bjp

& efficient administrator. In the time that has followed the rivalry onlygrown and became more complicated . The final nail in the coffin came onJune 9 ,2013 when the BJP decided to appoint Modi as the chairman of theof the campaign committee of the BJP for the 2014 Lok Sabha election inBJP’S GOA annual meeting this was essentially a signal that Modi was thetallest leader in the party & not Advani bringing the end of Advani era. Clearly unhappy over Mr. Modi’s elevation in the party hierarchy, Mr.Advani summoned the party president, Rajnath Singh, & handed over aresignation letter,  from all the main bodies of the party Parliamentaryboard, National Executive and Election Committee much to the shock &disbelief of the rank and file. Later on the request of top leaders & due tointervention of RSS & sang parivar truce was made and Mr.Advani tookhis resignation back.According to analysts, this whole conflict happened because of strugglefor power within party as Advani believes that in 2014 no party is goingto enjoy absolute majority and in a situation like that, the senior BJPLeader wants to project himself as an alternative to the non Congressand non Modi faction. Besides this conflict also took place because of theinsecurity in top members of party particularly Advani’s camp withrespect to Modi’s style of functioning and transition of leadership of partyin younger generation’s hand. This has created rift In BJP members too..

MODI EFFECT :- Yeddyurappa syndrome returns to haunt Karnataka BJP

With Modi’s appointment as head of the party’s campaign panel of LokSabha elections 2014. also seems to have emboldened former leader B.S.Yeddyurappa's supporters in the party to step up the campaign for hisreturn before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. While only Bharatiya Janata Party legislator G. Madhusudan haswritten a letter to party president Rajnath Singh to get Yeddyurappaback, many of the former chief minister's supporters are said to belobbying away from public glare for his return.Since Advani was a strong critic of Yeddyurappa as his over 3 yearrule in Karnataka which resulted in scandals ,corruption, illegalland deals etc. The veteran leader was also highly critical of the waythe BJP central leaders had handled the Karnataka issue.Yeddyurappa supporters apparently believe the Advani era in the BJPis over and hence it is time their leader returned to the party.Yeddyurappa is a great admirer of Modi and is said to be on good termswith him. He had hinted at his willingness to return to the BJP soonafter Modi's nomination as campaign panel chief. His supporters in the

Page 17: Group conflicts with in bjp

BJP are also encouraged to carry on their campaign as the stateparty leadership has not categorically stated that Yeddyurappawould not be taken back. This is because the state leadership isnot sure of the central leaders' stand on the issue.

The state leadership's stand has been that a decision on such issues is taken by

the BJP's central parliamentary board. Since Yeddyurappa party’scaused BJP a damage in 30 seats, a fact acknowledged by state BJP

itself. Though the issues on which the assembly and Lok Sabha elections are

Fought differ widely, for both the BJP and Yeddyurappa it is a question of

cutting losses.Modi is still untested as a national vote gatherer and has not mademuch of an impact in Karnataka in this year's and the 2008 assemblyelections. Modi will also find it difficult to resolve the Yeddyurappaissue early as taking him back when he is fighting over a dozen casesof corruption will only blunt the BJP's campaign against graft of theCongress-led central government. These aspects and the fact that thestate BJP lacks a leader with an all-Karnataka appeal mean that theparty will have to live for a long time with the dilemma on whether totake Yeddyurappa back or not.

REVOLT AGAINST MODI :-DELHI BJP VICE PRESIDENT RESIGNS

ON JULY 17 ,2013 Amir Raza Hussain BJP Vice-President in Delhi andfamous theatre artist, resigned from his post on Tuesday, July 16. Husainquit from his post following his remark against Narendra Modi over“Puppy" controversy.Hussain , during an interview with a TV news channel on Tuesday , openly revolted against Modi saying, “Modi is a BJP leader , not myLeader”Husain, who was elected as the Delhi BJP Vice President in May 2013.Times of India quoted Husain as saying, "A lot of people like me who livein a liberal as well as minority universe want an anti-Congress optionwhich an Atal Bihari Vajpayee or an L K Advani led BJP provides for.By promoting Modi, BJP has closed that option for us.“Husain's remark against Modi enraged party leaders as result he wasforced to resign after his statement against modi. Although he mentionedthat he had no intention to cause anguish against any leader.Husain's statement on Modi surfaced following the controversy where

Page 19: Group conflicts with in bjp

the Gujarat CM said, "Another thing... someone else is driving a car& we're sitting behind, even then if a puppy comes under the wheel, will be painful or not? Of course, it is." Modi, during an interview, was taking questions on killings of people during 2002 Godhra riots.

Modi also invited criticism from many following his another remarkof "burqa of secularism". The Gujarat CM who reportedly had saidthat "Congress hides behind the burqa (veil) of secularism.“ TheGujarat CM remains largely a prisoner of his image a political figurewho is divisive and does not have the capacity to reconcile and reachout to vast swathes of Indian society. This image follows his alleged rolein the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat. This image has created unrestamong the various leaders of BJP and is another main cause of groupconflict

LATEST INCIDENTS OF GROUP CONFLICTS WITHIN BJP

With Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi chorus growing within theBJP, a significant segment of party leadership is now demanding that Modishould be named as the parties Prime Ministerial candidate immediately. But Modi who fought a divided camp during his appointment as the BJP'spoll panel chief could once again face backlash from the Lal Krishna Advanicamp. In fact BJP's Ananth Kumar has already voiced his support forMadhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan. "Let's take a pledgethat the BJP's victory rally will begin from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Thistime the path to the red fort will not begin from any other state but fromBhopal, Madhya Pradesh," Ananth Kumar said. Sources say senior RSSleader Bhaiyyaji Joshi is taking the initiative on Modi. Joshi held talks withLK Advani & other top leaders clearing the way for Modi & resolving thisconflict for good.

Arun Shourie says Modi is BJP's PM candidate, calls his rivals 'stateless‘Leaders inspite of the fact that party president refrained everyone to speakanything that might deepen the conflict

BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha calls Team Narendra Modi ‘Lollypop’. :-Upset for being ignored for a key role in the upcoming 2014 General ElectionBJP leader Shatrughan Sinha has called the election team of party’s blueeyed boy Narendra Modi ‘lollypop’. One of the bitterest critics of the saffronleader also said that LK Advani was the biggest leader of the party. &“Everybody must seek his blessings," He also said that the Modi’s popularity wasbecause of the party and media and that he had little hope from his team asit lacked most of the experienced leaders of the party.  RSS mounts pressure on BJP leaders to fall in line:-Having made up its mind to back Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi asthe BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general election, the RSShas stepped up its efforts to persuade senior BJP leaders to fall in line.According to Sources, a determined RSS is not going to go back on its standfor immediate announcement of Mr. Modi’s candidature by the BJP, and thecurrent exercise is limited to mollifying the senior leaders. In recent weeks, the pro-Modi camp in the BJP has been underscoring theneed for early announcement of the prime ministerial candidate. Leader ofthe Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley said the sooner the partyannounced its candidate, the better it would be for it. Mr. Jaitley argued that any row would amount to the party committing a“hit-wicket” and turn out to be the only possible reason for it to lose thegeneral election.

A Bihar BJP legislator Rana Gangeshwar Singh on Monday said he wantedBihar chief minister Nitish Kumar to become the prime minister, instead ofModi exposing the cracks in the party’s state unit and prompting a BJPleader to admit that his party was facing internal problems. BJP leadersaccused the Janata Dal-United of trying to lure JD-U legislators but saidthey were confident of overcoming the challenge. A day after a Bihar BJPlegislator was suspended for anti Party activities. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Rajnath Singh on Sunday forcedthe party's Mumbai unit to cancel a rally to be held on March 17 to felicitateGujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for registering hat trick of victory inthe Assembly election. Though the party has maintained that the rally hasbeen cancelled in wake of drought situation in the state sources sayinfighting over control on the party is the real reason behind the decision.according to the sources Singh did not appreciate centre stage to Modi at therally. Around 1.5 lakh workers were expected to attend the rally. “It wasclear that Modi's position in the party would had become stronger after therally. It would have created more complications to already existingsituations inside BJP.The development has taken enthusiastic BJP workers aback. "We were fullycharged to hear Modi. It is a great disappointment now," said a worker fromBJP dominated Ghatkopar.

DISADVANTAGES OF INTRAGROUP CONFLICTS TO BJP

The conflicts within BJP has created lot of confusion , sense of unrest ,uncertainty & trust deficit, rift among the party members and as well as inall the state units of the BJP thereby demoralizing the party workers & partycadre who is waiting for its mobilization for2014 elections . This has weaken the party on national level. SEPARATION OF ALLIES:- JDU SPLIT FROM NDA The 17 year old alliance between JDU and BJP came to an end withNarendraModi being the centre talk b/w these two important parties. For JDU , theycannot afford elevation of Modi and made their intention absolutely clearabout Prime Minister candidate. On the other side ,BJP was all set to fight theupcoming Lok Sabha election projecting Modi as PM’s candidate . The JD(U)said it feared Mr. Modi’s hardline Hindu image could deter Muslim voters in

national elections, which must take place by May next year. POLITICAL TURMOIL IN NDA (INDIA ‘S LEADING

OPPOSITION COALITION:-The conflicts within BJP has created fractures in India's leadingopposition coalition as BJP being the largest party in it. Many parties

Page 24: Group conflicts with in bjp

like Shiv Sena , Akali Dal has expressed their concerns on conflicts takingplace in BJP and elevation of Modi after the walkout of JDU from thealliance .Besides Modi’s appointment has shaken the BJP and threatened thestability of the NDA. It has also sparked controversy over the involvementof the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS, a powerful Hindu volunteernationalist organisation) in internal BJP politics . For the beleaguered Congress, the open war in the BJP could not havecome at a better moment, allowing the congress to have breathing space asnow the focus of everyone has shifted from its poor governance issues, scams , inflation etc to BJP’s intra-politics who claims to be an alternativeFor Congress government for 2014 General Elections. This has provedbeneficial for Congress who is trying to regain his lost reputation. The Open war in BJP had tarnished the Party’s public image amonggeneral public who are desperately looking for an option other thancongress for 2014 General Elections. This might Prove costly to BJP innext elections and open’s an opportunity for third front as well. Lastly according to political experts & various surveys the partyneed to have more allies to strengthen NDA and to make sure that theycan be back in power but that is only possible if they set there house right

Page 25: Group conflicts with in bjp

ADVANTAGES OF INTRAGROUP CONFLICTS TO BJP

Emergence of strong and decisive leader who if lead’s BJP may turnbring the party in power in 2014 Elections as he has got great massappeal and has already proved his capability as efficient administratorThis might bring an end to leadership crisis situation as well in BJP

According to sources the level of conflicts within BJP has gone downin last few months & party is started concentrating on Preparation for2014 elections under leadership of Modi which is a good sign for BJP.

e.g. Narendra Modi’s call for ideas &suggestions for Hyderabad publicmeeting generates fantastic response.

Page 26: Group conflicts with in bjp

CONCLUSIONAS We know the conflicts within BJP is not resolved fully & The real

truth is that the BJP is in disarray and trying to recover from it . The smell of

blood from the Congress’s wounds is so strong that it arouses them into attacking

each other. .Hence it is too early to decide that these conflicts would turnBJP as an organization into functional unit or dysfunctional unit.Although at this point we can say that the conflicts has done both goodas well as damage to BJP thereby establishing Intragroup conflictparadox. Under these circumstances it looks like the conflicts within BJP

is hazardous idea whose actual intent and impact could be felt in thecoming months.  But then, politics is a game of quirk twists andturns and it would be interesting to see how the electoral politics ofIndia would unfold itself in coming days.

Page 27: Group conflicts with in bjp

INTERNAL CONFLICT IN BJP INENSIFIES It seems the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is at war with itself. ThePrincipal opposition party’s internal troubles resurfaced when seniorParty leader Ram Jethmalani embarrassed its party yet again bysaying that government's decision over appointment of new CBI chiefhas "averted national calamity". If Jethmalani’s salvo was not enough, BJP leader Shatrughan Sinha joined those who have asked Nitin Gadkari to step down as party chief.BJP, which calls itself a party with a difference, seems increasingly likea banner divided by different camps, with every other leader’sIndividual ambitions ruining the common core. The saffron party might be trying to tone down the “differences”,But dissidence and internal bickering is out in the open and thecommon man is beginning to become wary of the principal oppositionparty. BJP has indicated that it may take disciplinary action againstJethmalani who has demanded Gadkari's resignation and has disagreedwith the party's stand over the appointment of new CBI director
