Comparative Study: Behavior of Goldfish

(Carassius auratus auratus)

Based on it’s Water Quality

Introduction: “The Philippines forms an ocean region that has

long been recognized as the world’s center of marine biodiversity. And because of the abundance of its coral reef life, their usual means of living are fishing and farming fish.

A fish is any member of a paraphyletic group of organisms that consist of all gill-bearing aquatic craniate’s animals that lack limbs with digits. The adaptations that allow fishes to live in the water are gills, fins, and a streamlined body shape. The gills allow the fish to live in the water. The gills allow the fish to extract oxygen from the water. Its stream lined shape allows the fish to swim through the water without having major problems. “

In this study, the researchers will compare the behavior of the fish in their environment with detergent, ice and with water.

Problem:

• This study aims to determine the effects of detergent, ice and normal water to the behavior of the fish.

Page 6: GROUP 3 Welsie Claire Mejong Jeila Carie Dihayco Wenjeal Fuentes Jetmoore Rumao.

Hypothesis:

• There is no significant effect between the water with detergent powder, water with ice and the normal water on the behavior of the tested fishes.

• There is a significant effect between the water with detergent powder, water with ice and normal water on the behavior of the tested fishes.

Materials :

• 3 gold fish • 90g ice • 8ml/g powder• 1.4 l of water• 2 container• stirring rod• graduated cylinder• laboratory thermometer• weighing scale

Methods:• Materials are being prepared.• The 700 ml of water in the 3 containers

are labeled as container A B and C. • The 8ml/g detergent powder are

poured in container A, 90g of ice are also poured in container B.

• In 5 minutes, temperatures are being tested.• The first fish is placed in container A. Its

behavior are being observed for 2 minutes.• After observing the first fish, the

second/remaining fish is paced in container B which is water with ice. Its behavior are also observed for 2 minutes.

Discusion:

The fishes were observed based on their structural behavior on how they obtain in a particular environment. The first fish that was placed in the water with detergent powder started to panic at the first place then suddenly it moved slowly for every seconds that passes until it paralyzed. The movement of the fish was quietly unusual, though the fish wasn’t dead. The second fish that was placed in water with ice moves in a different way. After 2 minutes of waiting, the fish was finally isn't moving. Yet ,the fish wasn’t dead. Lastly, the fish that was placed in a regular water is actually moving in an ordinary way.

Conclusion:

• Therefore, the factors that affect the behavior of the fish is its environment. Fish must have water with adequate oxygen in which to live. Good-quality water will support more species of fish and greater populations of fish compared to the polluted water. In this case, adding detergent soap and ice makes the fish acts in an abnormal way. Nevertheless, the fish which is placed in a normal water temperature acts normally.
