Silent – the tested product range that sets new standards in acoustics
We live in a loud world. Noise makes people ill, wears on their nerves, spoils their concentration. The need for greater peace and quiet in our private and professional lives is a legitimate aspiration. With it come higher expectations on noise insulation in buildings. The Aschwanden range of inno-vative Silent products already allows this factor to be taken into account when planning concrete structures.

Silent
Scientifically verified and tested at the EMPA and the Fraunhofer Institute IBPIn structural engineering, the demands on noise insulation are increasing steadily – on one hand through legislation and codes, and on the other hand from owners and principals themselves. In response, our innovative and qualitatively superior load transmission elements are being consistently optimised. Consequently, in close collaboration with institutes of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW and the Hochschule für Technik Rapperswil HSR, noise insulating Silent variants of our CRET shear load connectors, ARBO shear load elements, RIBA anchors and NELL supports have been developed. These products are the result of extensive studies of building acoustics. The acoustical properties of these new Silent elements have been analysed in over 50 test series.
In the course of testing, a variety of insulation materials were investigated at a wide range of excitation frequencies to determine their vibration and structureborne noise damping properties – with particular regard to extended service life of the materials used. Subsequently, the acoustical properties of the elements were verified at the EMPA / Fraunhofer Institute IBP. The resulting productspecific impact noise reduction factors (Lw) are based on measurements made in realistic testing conditions. The significantly improved impact noise reduction of the Silent elements is equivalent to an audibility that is several times lower.
Outstanding qualityIn addition to their superb structural properties, the new Silent load transmission elements exhibit enhanced noise reduction characteristics. Outstanding features are the use of new, selectgrade materials (PUR) and their completely innovative design. As a result, they allow straightforward and acoustically efficient insulation of structural elements.
Our quality assurance system covers materials testing, design and technical documentation of the individual products, including conformance with codes and protection provisions. In production, our quality management is based on a tightly woven network of controls incorporating seamless monitoring of both raw materials and semifinished products, as well as the manufacturing processes themselves.

CRET Silent shear load connectorsMovement joints prevent uncontrolled crack formation and resulting damage such as leakage and corrosion. CRET Silent connectors not only facilitate shear load transmission and deflection compatibility between adja cent building elements, but also the acoustic isolation of building and/or structural elements such as stairways, landings, balconies, pathways etc.
ARBO Silent shear load elementsExhibit excellent impact sound reduction and optimal thermal insulation properties. ARBO Silent shear load elements facilitate the transmission of normal and shear loads between reinforced concrete building components that are separated by sound damping joints of 60 to 200 mm width.
RIBA Silent tensile and compression anchorsFreestanding structures such as selfsupporting access balconies need horizontal stabilisation. RIBA Silent anchors not only allow normal load transmission in movement joints, but also the acoustic decoupling of impact sound bridges that are created in static loadbearing joints.
NELL Silent stairway supportsThese new sound damping deformation supports with PUR and PE joint foam inlays are designed to support prefabricated stairs and reduce impact sound transmission between landings.
NELL Silent-Isolmat noise insulation supportNoise insulation supports for placement under structural and nonstructural walls. Strips of permanently elastic and polyurethane bonded rubber granulate. Supplied in rolls.

Silent – increased needs of modern society
Original German text by Prof. Dr. Ing. Urs Bopp SIA/VDI and Prof. Dr. sc. math. Marcel Steiner, School of Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland FHNW
Thanks to ongoing advances in technology, there are a steadily increasing number of products on offer that reduce noise emission levels. At the same time, however, people are exposed to a greater diversity of sources of noise. Moreover, our modern society longs for peace and quiet. Consequently, inhabitants – owning or renting property – are ever less willing to simply accept the in trusion of noise, and are demanding better levels of protection against noise. Building owners and principals are relaying this demand to planners.
This greater need for quiet, including the more stringent requirements of building codes, is leading increasingly to improved insulation against external noise. However, with lower external noise levels comes a heightened perception of unwelcome internal noise. For this reason, not only the transmission of airborne noise from one internal room to another, but also the transmission of structureborne and impact noise is of considerable significance.
Impact noise is generated by people walking, whereby the floor is deformed locally. Sound waves are created that propagate through the building structure and cause other structural elements to oscillate. These oscillations radiate sound waves that are audible as impact noise (see illustration of sound propagation in buildings).
Laying carpets can significantly reduce impact noise at its source. In contemporary interior design, however, carpets are not fashionable – far more popular are parquet, tiled and natural stone floors. Here, the vibration decoupling of building elements is extremely important. It allows the propagation of structureborne and impact noise to be reduced and – depending on the acoustic quality of the isolation – the radiated structureborne noise to be significantly lowered or even eliminated completely.
In addition to the selection of high quality products, the professional installation and application of these products are crucial. Unlike other physical processes such as heat transmission, even the smallest structureborne sound bridge can significantly reduce the impact noise insulation effect, or at worst, cancel it entirely. This is because even a modest amount of energy is sufficient to acoustically excite building elements. There is no need for extensive transmission points; the existence of a small, rigid bridge is enough to trigger the effect.
To avoid creating structureborne sound bridges during construction work, installation instructions are available for every type of Silent element.

Stairway support with sound insulation
NELL Silent
FunctionTransmission of normal forces; sound reduced effect. Typical applications: sound insulating support of prefabricated stairs.
From the results of the EMPA measurements for the evaluated impact sound reduction Lw, the following value was derived for CRET Silent980, based on a rigid landing:
As the materials used for the NELL Silent stairway supports are the same as those of the CRET Silent980 shear load connectors, the same impact sound reduction Lw = 39 dB can be assumed, particularly as the insulation elements of the stairway supports are not enclosed in sleeves in the way that the shear load dowels are.

NELL SilentIsolmat
NELL SilentIsolmat
Noise insulation support
NELL Silent-Isolmat
FunctionNELL SilentIsolmat is a noise insulation support placed under structural and nonstructural walls, made of permanently elastic, polyurethanebonded rubber granulate with adequate ageing properties, temperature resistant between 20°C and +80°C, water resistant. The evaluated impact sound reduction is comparable to that of the CRET Silent970 shear load connector, i.e.:
Using structureborne sound and vibration measurements undertaken in the laboratory of the FHNW, insulation properties were determined for NELL SilentIsolmat noise insulation supports that are similar to the insulation material used in the CRET Silent970 shear load connectors. For this reason, comparable sound reduction levels may be assumed.

Realistic tests at the Fraunhofer Institute for Buildings Physics IBP and the EMPAThe test rig concept allows original Silent elements to be tested realistically in the installed condition. The test chamber is isolated from the rest of the building so that bypass paths can be excluded. This test setup comes very close to a true installed situation.
The concrete slab in the transmission chamber is excited using a standard tapping machine. The reference installation is a rigidly built in landing slab.

Measurement and evaluation procedureFor testing purposes at the EMPA / Fraunhofer Institute IBP, a measurement procedure based on the standard for ceiling constructions (SN EN ISO 1408:1997 (SIA 181.008) or DIN EN ISO 10140) was used because currently, there is no international test procedure for landing or stair supports. This standards regulate impact sound measurement, for example with floating floor treatment.
Onethird octave band measurements were conducted in the reception area for:(a) Impact sound pressure level Ln,r,0 of the structure with
a rigid slab (= reference measurement).(b) The corresponding value Ln,r of the slab connected
by a Silent series product (= measurement with sound damping measure).
The sound damping effect in the individual onethird octave bands is given by the resultant difference:
Evaluated impact sound reduction LwFor simplified characterisation of sound insulating ele ments a single value is often required rather than the impact sound reduction of all 16 onethird octave bands.
Because there is currently no international test procedure for landing and stairway supports, this single figure for the Silent elements has been stated in the form of an evaluated impact sound reduction Lw to EN ISO 7172. This procedure can be readily applied to the case under review. It has also be confirmed by other investigations (E. Taskan, et al. Proposal for a Mathematical Model for Predicting Impact Sound Transmission in Decoupled Solid Stairways. Symposium documents, DAGA 2010, Berlin).
According to EN ISO 7172 the impact sound Ln,r, or Ln,r,0 curve plotted from the above measurements in the 100 Hz to 3150 Hz frequency bandwidth is compared against a reference curve (see Evaluated Normal Impact Sound Pressure Level). The reference curve is vertically offset in increments of 1 dB until the sum of the differences between the impact sound pressure level and the reference curve in the onethird octaves in which the impact sound pressure levels are higher than the reference curve is less than 32 dB. The level value of the offset reference curve at 500 Hz is then equivalent to the evaluated standard impact sound level Ln,r,w or Ln,r,0,w of the reference measurement.
The evaluated impact sound reduction is then given by:
Measurement and evaluation procedure for Silent products
L = Ln,r,0 - Ln,r
Lw = Ln,r,O,w – Ln,r,w
