On behalf of the Organising Committee, it is with great pleasure that we invite you
attend the Second Australasian Ground Control in Mining Conference. This follows on
from the success of the first Conference held in 2003 and is aimed at bringing together
practical mine site operators, technical support staff, geotechnical engineers, mining
engineers, consultants and researchers in the field of mining geomechanics and
ground control.
The Conference provides an excellent opportunity to exchange information, discuss
current challenges and share best practice between the coal and hard rock sectors of
the industry in both Australasia and overseas with a particular focus on new
technologies and developments; industry needs and mine site problem solving; and
practical case studies.
Some of the themes to be discussed at the Conference include: ground support
systems and design; challenges in extreme mining environments; geotechnical risk
management; best practice case studies; numerical modelling; managing large
deformations and dynamic environments; geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring;
and geotechnical education and training.
On behalf of the Organising Committee it is with great pleasure that we invite you to
register for the Second Australasian Ground Control in Mining Conference. We look
forward to you joining us in Sydney this coming November.
Sincerely,
Dr Paul Hagan and Dr Serkan Saydam

W1 – An Overview of Current Challenges and RecentDevelopments in Managing High Stress Conditions Workshop Overview: Ground control in high stress mining environments is a rapidly evolvingdiscipline. Substantial advances have been made in recent years, particularly inmanaging high stress conditions in the larger development typical of modernmechanised mining operations, but many challenges remain. This workshopprovides key updates on a number of new techniques and technologiescurrently used in the hard rock sector by site engineers, consultants andtechnology companies. Topics explored include:• Ground support design for seismic management• Seismic monitoring approaches to assist ground control• Ground support design in block caving environments• Numerical modelling techniques to guide ground control management• Fibre reinforced shotcrete in high displacement mining environments.
Who should attend? This course is designed for practitioners and decision makers including:• Site based geotechnical and mining engineers• Geotechnical and mining consultants• Rock mechanics researchers• Government departments and legislators.

Workshop Presenters:The lead presenter for the workshop is Emeritus Professor Jim Galvin. Jim hasdegrees in mathematics and mining engineering from the University of Sydneyand obtained his PhD whilst working in the rock mechanics section of theChamber of Mines of South Africa Research Organisation. Upon returning toAustralia, he worked as a miner, undermanager, technical services managerand mine manager and was active in mines rescue. He was appointed asProfessor and Head of the School of Mining Engineering at UNSW with industryfunding to establish a mining rock mechanics research group. Jim is currentlywriting a text book on Geotechnical Engineering in Underground Coal Mining onbehalf of ACARP and the MCA and consults full-time on an international basiswith a focus on risk management, particularly in surface and underground hardrock and coal mining.
There will also be Principal Geotechnical engineers from both AngloMetallurgical Coal and BMA presenting recent pillar design case studies.
