International Business Program Established between 1983-1985 by former

faculty member, Gene Britt, the program offers an exciting group of classes designed to equip students with the practical skills and knowledge needed for sourcing, marketing and distributing goods around the globe.

The program is an asset to students who will work in San Diego area businesses and to those planning on living and working in foreign countries.

This is also an important program for someone interested in engaging in Global Entrepreneurship.

Internships are an important part of the program because the internship gives students practical work experience with local organizations engaged in various aspects of international business and global supply chain management.

All courses are offered in face-to-face format. All core courses are taught at night (after 6:00 pm) Classes are smaller than others in the business

area International Business classes are taught with

industry experts We have approval from Curriculum to offer classes

as hybrid or fully online but have not done so yet. High percent of students completing certificate are

international students Students can finish certificate in 1 year Courses are offered every other semester

International Business Program Classes Offered

BUS 250 Introduction to International Business

An overview of international business designed to provide beginners and business people with a global perspective on international trade, foreign investments, impact of financial markets, international marketing and the operations of multinational corporations.

BUS 251 Import/Export Procedures

An in-depth examination of

import/export techniques, terminology, methods of payment and collections, insurance and bonds, customs regulations and tariffs, Department of Commerce aids, and export quotations.

BUS 252 Global Sourcing, Buying and Manufacturing

A course on locating and obtaining goods and services used for international trade. Sourcing on the Internet, trade data and other computer aided techniques for locating goods and trading partners. Contracts, shipping terms, methods of payment, offshore manufacturing and “maquiladoras” are discussed.

BUS 253 International Marketing: Expanding Exports

A course which examines the economic, legal, practical, competitive and cultural environment of foreign markets in order to design appropriate products, establish price and develop promotion strategies to effectively reach those markets. Starting your Export Management company is developed.

Financial Transactions

A course that surveys the international monetary system as it affects import and export. Students learn about Letters of Credit, drafts and other international banking documents. Students will also examine foreign exchange rates and international financing and the risks involved in international transactions.

BUS 257 International Transportation

This course deals with all aspects of international freight forwarding as utilized by an importer or exporter. All modes of transportation are explored including ocean, air, rail and truck. Quoting air and ocean shipments is covered as well as auditing freight invoices and negotiations of freight rates.

BUS 258 Cultural Dimensions in International Business

A course examining the cultural barriers encountered when engaging in international trade. Coping effectively with the challenges of a foreign assignment and specific information on working and negotiating with foreign nationals.

BUS 265-267 Internships in International Business

Work experience in a business organization engaged in international business. The intern spends between 60-75 hours, or 120-150 hours or 180-225 hours per semester in on-the-job training.

Grossmont College Customs Broker License ExamPreparation Course

In 1993 on the recommendations of the International Business Program’s advisory committee, the first Customs Broker License Exam Review and Preparation Course was offered.

The course is still being offered today in Spring or Fall to prepare for either the April or October exam given by US Customs.

Customs Broker License ExamPreparation Course

This College course is designed to significantly improve your chances of passing the Customs Broker License Exam.

We designed the course using the personal experience of Customs Brokers, analyzing past exams and feedback from our students.

An experienced customs broker will conduct a focused and intensive review of the topics on which you will be tested when you take the Customs Broker License Exam. You will learn to find information quickly and to classify product accurately.

You will take realistic practice tests based on past exams. You will also learn test-taking techniques and time management.

The course will cover the material most likely to appear on the exam and is geared to build both your skill and confidence.
