Grocery Shopping Math Project Description: Students will apply their 4th grade math skills when solving real world problems. Task Directions: Use the grocery ads, coupons, and price lists to answer the following questions.You may use scratch paper, print out the receipts, make your own receipts, or you can create a poster/brochure to complete the tasks. Be as creative as you want! Description: Students will apply their 4th grade math skills when solving real world problems.

Monday-Use the grocery ads to answer the following questions.

Wednesday-Use the food group price lists to answer the following questions.

1) How much would it cost to buy 3 bananas, 2 bags of cherries, and 4 pounds of strawberries?

2) How much would it cost to buy 3 1/2 pounds of asparagus? 3) How much would it cost to buy 2 boxes of cereal, a dozen tortillas, and a bag of pasta? 4) How much would it cost to buy 4 1/2 pounds of chicken? 5) How much would it cost to buy 2 gallons of milk, a package of cheese, and gallon of ice

cream? Right Now Enrich: What 3 items can you buy with $10? Try to get as close to $10 without going over!

Thursday: Use the food group price lists to complete the task below.

Your job is to purchase something from each of the five food groups and one item of your choice. That includes at least one item from the fruit group, vegetable group, bread and cereal group, dairy group, and meat group. Then you may buy one extra item for your household. You have $30 to spend on groceries. How much money will you have left over?

Friday: Use the grocery ads and price list to complete the tasks below. Feel free to use any of the coupons to save money!

1) Determine your family’s weekly budget if your allocate $40 per person. 2) Create a weekly shopping list (food items only) for your family. 3) Find the total cost of your groceries. 4) If you you money left in your budget, Make a list of non-food items that you need as well. 5) Determine the cost of those items. 6) What is the total cost of food items and non-food items? 7) How much change do you have left? 8) Round the cost of each item to the nearest dollar to determine the estimated cost. Is your estimate higher or lower than the actual cost?
