GUEST SPEAKERS SHARE EXPERIENCES WITH BUSINESS STUDENTS
Thanks to Carol Davis and Savana Rose who shared their considerable experience with our business students. Carol spoke to our Virtual Enterprise students about the process of financing a business, the role of venture capitalists and taking a business public. Savana spoke to our Intro to Business students about all aspects of starting a business. She talked about everything you should think about to formulate your business plan. Both presentations were incredibly informative and valuable to our business students.
Thank you!
YEARBOOK NEWS:
BE SURE TO PREORDER YOUR 2012
YEARBOOK NOW!
Pre-orders for yearbooks are still being taken in the main office or online at Jostens.com. They are still only $50, like last year. The yearbook supplement of activities from March through graduation is included in the price. You can pay for part of it in order to reserve one, and pay the balance in June. Last year we sold out, so be sure to pre-order yours today! Pre-orders will be taken until the end of first semester.
VIDEO DEPT. NEWS: Video 1 students are finishing scripting their final show, a talk / interview / entertainment show, and they will be recording this show at SOU’s RVTV studio. They are acclimating to the big studio and working on sets, lighting, and audio, in addition to learning the new Tricaster System in the control booth. Lots of fun! Video 2 students are working on a variety of subjects for their short films, such as: first snow, clay animation, a slithering person on campus, Shaka Shock and many more. Gary Kout, producer and president of SOFaT (Southern Oregon Film and TV), visited us to share his projects and experiences as a producer in the film world. Alex Williams, local filmmaker and cinematographer, also visited the class. We viewed some of his latest short films and discussed the organization and planning needed before filming. Thank you to both Gary and Alex for taking time out of your busy schedules to share your knowledge and experiences with AHS’ video students. Thank you to all the parents who supported and/or worked on the Winter Fine Arts Festival. It was a great show! Early Reminder: The AHS Video/Film Festival is April 26, 2012! Questions or comments? Please call Ms. Dawisha at 541-482-8771 ext. 248. Have a fun and relaxing holiday
season. See you next year!!!
News from the Health Center:
Concussions happen to kids who are in competitive sports, but also to kids who are not on any of our AHS teams. Last week we were able to use the ImPact testing (pre- and post-concussion testing) to evaluate a student who was no longer on an AHS team, but who had been in the past. It made me wish that we had pre-injury baselines for as many of our students as possible. And, indeed, we do have access to testing for more kids than we currently have tested. The school buys the tests in bulk and purchases more than are used by the athletes. I have arranged with the athletic department to be able to use some of the remaining tests for other kids who are at risk for concussion. If you have a son or daughter who participates in skateboarding, long boarding, snowboarding, competitive bicycling or motorcycling, or any other sports at high risk for concussion, send them in to set up an appointment for the pre-injury testing. Then if they should have a fall or blow to the head that results in any symptoms of concussion, we can do the post-injury testing. It is a great use of current technology! Help AHS Students Achieve their College and Career Goals The ASPIRE program at AHS needs more adult mentors! ASPIRE volunteers receive training in all aspects of the road to higher
education, so they can support students as they explore college and vocational school options, admissions, financial aid and
scholarship opportunities. ASPIRE mentors are currently working with over 100 students at AHS, and we have more than 30 students
waiting to be matched with a mentor. Our goal is to provide support to 200 AHS students by the end of the school year! Mentors work
one-on-one with students. No experience is needed, and mentors decide how much time to commit. To learn more, contact Jen
Marsden: 482.8771 x 130, [email protected].
Recommendation Requests Private colleges require letters of recommendation and evaluation forms from teachers and the student’s counselor. Students who are
applying to private colleges should pick up a “Recommendation Request Form” in the counseling office. After completing the form,
they can make copies for each teacher they are asking to write recommendation letters. Make sure evaluation forms for each college
accompany the Recommendation Request. Remember that teachers and counselors are asked to write a lot of letters, so get your
requests in early and allow two weeks for letters to be completed.
PSAT Scores PSAT scores will be available in January. The counselors will visit the sophomore advisory classes to discuss scores and
interpretation of results. The juniors will be called into the Counseling Office to discuss and review their scores with their counselor.
The counselors will meet with parents of 9th
and 10th
grade students on Thursday, February 16th
in the IVC from 7:00 to 8:30pm.
Amy Kennedy will review sophomore PSAT scores with parents. Steve Smith will talk about what students should be doing to
prepare for applying to colleges.
Sat and ACT Testing Information Register for the SAT (www.collegeboard.com) and ACT (www.act.org) online. Help is available in the counseling office for students
who have questions or need assistance completing the application. If you qualify for free/reduced lunch, you may be eligible for a fee
waiver. See Michelle Gordon for more information.

Rotary Short Term Summer Exchange Program
During the Rotary District 5110's Short Term (ST) Exchange Program, the U.S. student spends one month overseas, and then the two
students return to the U.S. home for a month. The program fee of $100 only covers Rotary's matching service, two training sessions,
and a program shirt. The families are responsible for other costs, including round trip air fare, housing for the exchange student, etc.
Students must be 15-19 years old to participate in the Rotary ST program. The preliminary application will be available in January.
See Michelle Gordon in the Counseling Office.
FAFSA INFORMATION
Seniors and Senior Parents: As soon as possible after January 1st, fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
at the official government website: www.fafsa.ed.gov. Do not use any other FAFSA websites, which sometimes charge money to
submit your application. Be sure to select the 2012-2013 application (the 2011-2012 application is for current college students). You
need to fill out the FAFSA to be eligible for the federal Pell Grant and Oregon Opportunity Grant. The FAFSA is also required for
most scholarships and loans. You can prepare for filling out the FAFSA by doing the following:
Apply for two PINs, one for the student and one for a parent or guardian. The PIN serves as your electronic signature on the
FAFSA. You can apply for a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov.
Go to www.studentaid.ed.gov. Click on “My FSA” to set up your account. Once you have created your FSA account, you can
complete your “MyFSA Profile.” Here, you can add and update important information about yourself at any time. Whenever you update your Profile, the information will automatically carry over to any of Student Aid on the Web’s other modules. After
you fill out the info on your Profile, click on “Financial Aid and Scholarship Wizard”, to learn about financial aid and
scholarships for which you may qualify. The wizard will help you find and calculate virtually everything you need for any school
you’re interested in. It will show you the deadlines for filing financial aid applications, walk you through scholarship searches,
help you estimate your expected family contribution and federal aid, and provide you a tool to interpret and analyze your financial
aid award letters.
You can also estimate your expected family contribution at www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov
Scholarship Information: Find the Money! Please encourage your student to apply for every scholarship for which they are eligible. All scholarship applications should be
started at least three weeks before they are due. Many will require letters of recommendation and essays. Please allow time for
teachers and counselors to write letters, and our registrar time to prepare an official transcript, if required. Applying for scholarships is a tough job, which requires good organizational and time management skills. Find more scholarship information below and at
www.ashland.k12.or.us/scholarships.
Access the OSAC scholarship application at www.oregonstudentaid.gov. Information on the OSAC scholarship is available
in the Counseling Office. If you haven’t already received one, come and pick up an OSAC information packet, which will
explain the criteria for each scholarship. Submit your OSAC online eApp by February 16, 2012, to receive an early review of
your application for errors, and a chance to win a $500 Early Bird Scholarship! March 1st is the FINAL Deadline. After
submitting your eApp, OSAC will send you an e-mail, acknowledging they received it, and instruct you to check your e-Student
Profile for verification that transcripts were successfully uploaded. If the status is “Valid eApp Accepted,” Congratulations! If
it reads “Review Pending”, check back until you receive the “Valid eApp Accepted” message. If it reads “eApp Problem”,
correct the problem by the deadline. Local Scholarships: The community of Ashland is supporting our senior students with over 25 scholarships. Last year over
$110,000 was awarded to AHS students to further their education. The local scholarship applications will be available online at
www.ashland.k12.or.us/scholarships on December 15, 2011. Click on the red highlighted “local scholarships” to find
instructions, the local list of scholarships, and the applications. The applications are fillable PDFs that can be saved to your
computer. There are scholarships for every type of student and we encourage every senior to search and apply for all
scholarships for which they are eligible. The deadline is March 7, 2012.
The ESA Foundation offers 31 different scholarships. See Michelle Gordon for more info. Deadline 2/1/2012.
Ask your counselor about the RCC Ambassadors or the Univ. of Oregon Pathways programs to see if you might qualify for
scholarships for reduced or free tuition at either of these schools.
Western Oregon University offers a one-time $500 scholarship to students participating in ASPIRE. See your ASPIRE mentor
or Jen Marsden if you plan on attending WOU.
Want help learning to write winning scholarship essays? RCC offers a course to help you get there. CG105 is available online or in class at RCC for 1 credit. More info at www.roguecc.edu/Schedule/?search=CG105.
Grizz-O-Gram December2011 page6
Check out the athletic department web site for schedules and more: www.ashlandathletics.org ATTENDANCE: In order to participate in an athletic contest, the student MUST be in full attendance for all of his or her classes that
day.
TRANSPORTATION
When traveling on a bus with their team, athletes need to return with the team unless:
• A parent or guardian takes them home. OR
• The athlete has a note signed by the parent and a school administrator specifying another parent who may take them home.
THEFT: Unfortunately, we have on-going problems with theft in our locker rooms. Please be advised that we cannot guarantee the
security of or take responsibility for items that are lost in this manner. Please emphasize with your son or daughter that they SHOULD
NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN THE LOCKER ROOM under any circumstances. It is sad that a few people ruin it for everybody
else but that is the reality of the situation.
STATE STANDARDS FOR ELIGIBILITY
Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) state academic guidelines for
participation in athletics:
The student must have earned 5 credits in the previous semester. This does
not apply to incoming freshman for fall and winter sports.
The student must be enrolled in and passing 5 credits in the current
semester.
The student must be making satisfactory progress toward graduation,
defined as having completed 8 credits prior to their sophomore year, 20
prior to junior year and 33 prior to senior year.
ASHLAND HIGH SCHOOL
ACADEMIC POLICY
Students will be eligible to be on the team and practice based on the above state
standards. However, to be eligible to participate in competition on a weekly
basis, student-athletes will be required to have 5 classes in which they have a
grade of “C” or better and no “F’s.” Our Academic Coaches, Allison French and
Jay Preskenis, will monitor grades on a weekly basis. Students who are not
meeting the standards will be required to meet with them twice weekly to work
on individualized plans for improving their academic performance. In certain
cases, they may allow students to play who are below the district standard but
are working hard and showing satisfactory progress toward meeting standard.
AHS Athletic Information:
Theatre II sponsors Theatrelinks
beginning in February. This class will partner with Manhattan Theatre
Club in New York who coordinate a playwriting
program via video-conferencing and website
work. Professional actors and playwrights in
NYC will mentor AHS students. David
Lindsey-Abaire’s play GOOD PEOPLE will be
studied. Also, AHS will be connected to theatre
schools in Texas and Illinois. Our students will
collaboratively write a play and then another
high school program will produce it. This is
AHS’ 12th
year involved with Theatrelinks!

The AHS Spring Musical is coming!
West Side Story
March 7-17
The Romeo & Juliet musical love story is set on the gang-infused streets of New York. With a
book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, West
Side Story remains one of the favored and most powerful dramatic musicals of all times.
The show revolves around doomed lovers Tony and Maria, caught in the middle of a clash
between the Jets, an Anglo gang, and the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang. The 1957 musical, which
was made into a film in 1961 starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer and Rita Moreno, features
such classic songs as "Tonight," "Somewhere" and "I Feel Pretty."
Suzanne Seiber and Christine Williams direct 35 actors, singers and dancers in this show.
Suzanne Seiber is the choreographer. Holly Johnson and Jennifer Schloming are the musical
directors. Mason McLellan is the stage manager assisted by Camille Pechja and Bronte
Kennedy.
Tickets will go on sale in January online at www.showtix4u.com and in February in
downtown Ashland at Paddington, Tree House Books and Music Coop. Reserved $20; General
$15; Student/Senior $10. Reserved tickets are only sold online. Seven evening shows play Wed
through Saturday March 7—17. Matinees will be Sunday, March 11 and Saturday, March 17 at 2
p.m.
