1 Griffith University 1011SCG MATHS 1A ASSIGNMENT 1. This assignment is worth 4% of your final mark. Distributed MONDAY, 24 MARCH, 2014. Due THURSDAY, 3 APRIL, 2014 at 4pm. READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY. Extensions must be requested in advance but will only be given in the most unusual circumstances. Late submissions with no extension will not be accepted. Place completed assignments in the 1011SCG assignment box on level 1, Science 2 building (N34) - these are beside room 1.10 and are near the stairs on level 1. Answer these questions neatly on A4 size paper. Start each new question on a new page. Your answers must be handwritten. Please make sure your answers are legibly written and well set out. Material that is not easily read will not be marked. All pages must be numbered and SECURELY STAPLED together. The presentation of your answers matters a lot - you must explain your working and you must use proper mathematical notation (as used in texts, notes etc). Just writing an answer with no working is not enough. Bad layout and notation will lose marks. Complete the cover sheet on the other side of this page and staple it as the FRONT page of your assignment. You must fill out all the requested information. YOU WILL LOSE MARKS IF YOU DO NOT DO THIS. What is plagiarism ? Plagiarism is when you copy someone else’s answers. Even if you make slight changes in symbols, it is still plagiarism. Plagiarism is cheating and is wrong. COPYING FROM THE INTERNET, FACEBOOK ETC. IS PLAGIARISM. If it is detected, all the people whose answers are extremely similar will get zero marks for the questions involved. It is a good idea to discuss problems with other people. This is often a helpful thing to do. But you must write up your answers by yourself.

Question 1.

(a) A sled is being pulled along the ice by ropes attached to two husky dogs, asshown in the diagram below.

!

T1

!j 30 N

30˚ !

i sled WEST 15˚ !

T2 40 N

If the dogs pull at constant but different forces shown on the diagram

(i) Find !T1 and !

T2 in terms of !i and

!j .

(ii) Using vectors, find the resultant force on the sled.

(iii) What is the magnitude and direction of the resultant force ?

(iv) Does the sled travel due West ?If it does not move due West, in what direction does it travel ?

(b) Dog 1 wants to change the angle at which it pulls the sled.

!T1

30 N ! sled WEST 15˚ 40 N !

T2

(i) At what angle ! should dog 1 pull the sled so that the sled travels due West ?

(ii) Dog 1 is getting tired and can only pull the sled with a force of 8 N.

Is it now possible to keep the sled moving due West ?

If so, at what angle ! should dog 1 now pull the sled so that the sled travelsdue West ?
