FOR TWENTY YEARS , Greystone Books has worked with the David

Suzuki Foundation to create books that help readers understand and

appreciate the world around them. This unique collection of important

works includes books that take a stand on issues related to the envi-

ronment and sustainability, explain the workings of the natural world,

or capture the magic of some aspect of that world. Together we have

created more than seventy new books, many of them best-sellers and

award winners.

Beginning in September 2015, this relationship will take an excit-

ing new path when Greystone shifts its historical partnership with

the David Suzuki Foundation to the David Suzuki Institute. The David

Suzuki Institute is a non-profit organization founded in 2010 that

works closely with the David Suzuki Foundation to advance awareness

of important environmental issues.

Greystone Books is proud to partner with the David Suzuki Insti-

tute, and we are proud to launch this relationship with three new

books in this catalog: Slick Water: Fracking and One Insider’s Stand

Against the World’s Most Powerful Industry, More Than Honey: The

Survival of Bees and the Future of Our World, and The Wild In You:

Voices from the Forest and the Sea.

BOTH A BIOGRAPHY of an irreverent African Grey parrot—given to asking “Whaddya know?” and announcing “Party time!”—and an exploration of the his-tory of birds/dinosaurs, the relationships between humans and birds, our notions of language and intelligence, and our tendency to “other” anything that is differ-ent from us, Tuco also describes Brett’s own painful experience of being othered as an androgyne. Provocative, profound, hilarious, and moving, Tuco is most of all the extraordinary story of Brett’s decades-long relationship with this singular bird, what Brett calls “a story we made together.”

BRIAN BRETT is the author of Trauma Farm, which won the 2009 Writers’ Trust of Canada Nonfiction Prize, and has written numerous books of poetry and fiction. He lives on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia.

excerpt

Tuco came with a heavy little music box, which the former owner claimed he loved. The music would “pacify” Tuco if he became wild and obnoxious. The box played

“Feelings,” a song so treacly I could understand why it drove him into silence. I kept it on the board sitting on filing cabinet, beside his cage (in case I felt the need to tor-ture both of us), until the day Tlell, our lovable husky cross, flopped down too close to the filing cabinet and soon began snoring. Tuco scuttled out of his cage, deciding this was going to be more fun than the usual afternoon nap. He tugged at the heavy little box, wiggling it around, which made me curious, so I stayed at my desk—until I suddenly realized he’d pulled it over above the dog’s head. He whipped around and started pushing it. I leapt to my feet and shouted “Watch out!” so loudly that the dog looked up, startled, just as the box crashed to the floor where her head had been resting a half-second earlier.

Tuco strode cackling—shoulders twice as wide as a minute earlier—back to his perch. I removed the busted music box to the garbage can.

WHEN JESSICA ERNST’S well water turned into a flammable broth that even her dogs refused to drink, the biologist and long-time oil patch consultant discovered that energy giant Encana had secretly fracked hundreds of gas wells around her home, piercing her community’s drinking water aquifer. Since then, her ongoing lawsuit against Encana, Alberta Environment, and the Energy Resources Conser-vation Board has made her a folk hero in many places worldwide where fracking is underway or is being contemplated. In this powerful work of investigative jour-nalism, Andrew Nikiforuk interweaves Ernst’s story with the science of fracking and stories of human and environmental repercussions left in its wake. Slick Water raises dramatic questions about the role of Big Oil in government, society’s obsession with rapidly depleting supplies of unconventional oil and gas, and the future of civil society.

ANDREW NIKIFORUK is an award-winning Canadian journalist who has been writing about the oil and gas industry for more than two decades. A winner of the Rachel Carson Environmental Book Award, he was one of the first journalists in North America to document the devastating effects of hydraulic fracturing on rural communities. He lives in Calgary, Alberta.

IN THAT LONELY SECTION OF HELL, police detective Lori Shenher describes her role in Vancouver’s infamous Missing and Murdered Women Investigation and her years-long struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of her work on the case. From her first assignment in 1998 to explore an increase in the number of missing women to the harrowing 2002 interrogation of convicted serial killer Robert Pickton, Shenher tells a story of massive police failure—failure of the police to use the information about Pickton available to them, failure to understand the dark world of drug addiction and sex work, and failure to save more women from their killer. That Lonely Section of Hell passionately pursues the deeper truths behind the causes of this tragedy and the myriad ways the system failed to protect vulnerable women.

“IT ALL COMES down to making the right life choices,” says the NHL’s legendary Reggie Leach, and this intimate biography lays bare the decisions that led him to become one of the best snipers in hockey history. Nicknamed the Riverton Rifle for his thrilling speed and deadly shooting skills, Leach overcame a childhood marked by poverty and racism to rise through the NHL ranks, playing for the Stanley Cup-winning 1975 Philadelphia Flyers. Through Leach’s own recollections, The Riverton Rifle traces his trajectory from humble beginnings to NHL stardom and follows the dramatic fall caused by drinking and his subsequent rebirth as a successful businessman, family man, and pillar of the Aboriginal community.

REGGIE LEACH was a member of the renowned Broad Street Bullies-era Philadel-phia Flyers and set goal-scoring records that still stand today. In his post-hockey life, Reggie is well-known for his charity work and for steering Aboriginal youth towards making positive life choices. He lives on Manitoulin Island, in Northern Ontario.

RENOWNED TIGER RESEARCHER Sooyong Park, a man who has dedicated much of his life to these amazing animals, reveals the heart of his work in Great Soul of Siberia. Like a cross between Jane Goodall and Timothy Treadwell, he fear-lessly immerses himself in the lives of a family of notoriously reclusive Siberian tigers, following them across azalea-strewn mountains and painfully staking out through frigid Russian winters in underground bunkers to watch them. Inevitably, Park becomes emotionally and spiritually attached to these beautiful but dan-gerous apex predators and draws on more than twenty years of experience and research to describe the tigers’ losing battle against poaching and a diminishing habitat.

SOOYONG PARK is an award-winning documentary filmmaker who has devoted over twenty years to studying and filming Siberian tigers. His groundbreaking tiger research was the subject of the award-winning film Siberian Tiger Quest, which aired on PBS. He lives in Seoul, Korea.

GRE AT SOUL OF SIBERIAPassion, Obsession, and One Man’s Quest for the World’s Most Elusive TigerSOOYONG PARK Foreword by JOHN VAILLANT

The story of one man’s all-consuming quest to follow three generations of Siberian tigers, and the tigers’ struggle to survive in a harsh landscape marked by poachers and a disappearing habitat.

“A beautiful book, and the best account of Siberian tigers I’ve read. Park’s remarkable first-hand observations of a wild tiger family contain the wisdom of his years of expe-rience and are written with great verve, intelligence, dedication, and understanding.” – JEFFREY MASSON, author of When Elephants Weep and Beasts

THE SAYING GOES that without bees, humankind would only survive for four more years; these crucial pollinators are, indeed, worth more than honey. In More Than Honey, Marcus Imhoof and Claus-Peter Lieckfeld exam-ine the history and current status of our relationship to and reliance on bees while exposing the human behaviors contributing to the decline of the bee population—a decline that could ultimately contribute directly to a world food problem. Illustrated with jaw-droppingly detailed photos of bees, More Than Honey is a fascinating, accessible overview of a species that is inextrica-bly tied to our survival.

THE SCHOOL OF SOPHISTICATED DRINKING traces the deep-seated lineage of drinking in the social, political, and even scientific developments of our culture. Inspired by an ongoing series of lectures at Berlin’s legendary Potsdamer Strasse cocktail den, the Victoria Bar, each chapter delves into the sociopolitical signifi-cance of and technological innovations behind a familiar wine or spirit—brandy, vodka, whisky, rum, gin, tequila, and champagne—and shares plenty of tales of adventure, from the glamour of Hollywood and Broadway to the tormented worlds of well-known writers, to the outbreak of wars and the unending struggle for economic and military power. Whether you’re an expert drinker or a novice barfly, it’ll give you plenty to contemplate inside your glass.

“I celebrate the story of Doi Chaang in Thailand as a force for change. I believe that through trade justice, communities like Doi Chaang and world markets can meet and thrive.” – TOM SMITH, Executive Director of Fairtrade Canada

THE AKHA HILL Tribe of Thailand has a long, tumultuous history. Politics, eco-nomics, and land development consistently worked against the Akha’s desire to move away from their dependency on opium production and create a stable future for their children. That all changed in 2006 when prominent businessman John Darch met with entrepreneur Wicha Promyong. Their meeting resulted in the establishment of an equal partnership business venture that goes beyond fair trade: the Doi Chaang Coffee Company. Beyond Fair Trade tells the story of the growth of this unique partnership, its successes and challenges, and the people behind it.

THE WILD IN YOUVoices from the Forest and the Sea

LORNA CROZIER & IAN MCALLISTER

A gorgeous and stirring collection of photos and poems from photographer Ian McAllister and Governor General’s Award-winning poet Lorna Crozier that reveals

how the startling wildness of the natural world is mirrored in the human heart.

A TESTAMENT TO the miraculous beings that share our planet and the places where they live, The Wild in You is a creative collaboration between one of our time’s best nature photographers and one of North America’s most talented and critically acclaimed poets. Inspired by the majestic and savage beauty of McAl-lister’s photographs, Crozier translates the wild emotion of land and sea into the language of the human heart. Featuring over thirty beautiful full-size pho-tographs of wolves, bears, sea lions, jellyfish, and other wild creatures paired with thirty original poems, The Wild in You challenges the reader to a deeper understanding of the connection between humans, animals, and our earth.

“Each poem and photograph in this book honours the patch of Earth we have carved our home in; its squelch of mud, whale song, the berry balanced on a white

bear’s tongue. Together, Crozier and McAllister crystallize an ecosystem as powerful as the grizzly bear and as fragile as a crane fly’s wing.”

NEW FORMAT REPRINTS

IN GOLD MEDAL DIARY, Hayley Wickenheiser—the most decorated female hockey player in the game—intimately recounts her day-to-day experience of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. At the heart of the book are Wickenheiser’s revelations about the life of an Olympian—the behind-the-scenes stories, the physical and emotional challenges, and the struggles, disappointments, and successes of an elite athlete.

HAYLEY WICKENHEISER is a five-time Olympic gold medalist who is regarded as one of the best female hockey players in the world. She regularly gives back to the community via her work with organizations like JumpStart, Right to Play, Ovarian Cancer Canada, and many others. She lives in Calgary, Alberta.

IN THIS MARRIAGE of memoir and manifesto, Elizabeth May reflects on her extra- ordinary life and the people and experiences that have formed her and informed her beliefs. As a result of her disparate formative experiences, May believes that Canadians must rescue our threatened democracy, return to our traditional role as a world leader, develop a sustainable economy, and take immediate and decisive action to address the climate crisis. Who We Are is both a fascinating portrait of a remarkable woman and an urgent call to action.

ELIZABETH MAY is the leader of the Green Party of Canada and Member of Par-liament for Saanich-Gulf Islands. She was formerly executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada. She lives in Sidney, British Columbia.

WHO WE AREReflections on My Life and CanadaELIZABETH MAY

A behind-the-scenes view of the world’s most exciting sporting spectacle, from a multiple medal winner and Olympic veteran.

A Globe & Mail bestseller.

An engaging account of Elizabeth May’s remarkable life and her clarion call for a new Canada.

“Wickenheiser, arguably the world’s foremost female hockey player, has enough medals, honours and accolades to fill several suitcases, but there’s nothing ‘been there, done that’ about this diary. [Her] enthusiasm and commitment come through on every page.” – HERIZONS

“Elizabeth May is without doubt the most impressive party leader in Canada today—superhumanly hardworking, dedicated, smart, witty, and fearless when speaking truth to power and to the public. Who We Are reminds us she is also a fine writer.” – RONALD WRIGHT, author of A Short History of Progress

PADDLENORTH TELLS THE riveting story of Jennifer Kingsley’s fifty-four-day paddling adventure in the northern wilderness as she and her five companions battle raging winds, impenetrable sea ice, and treacherous rapids. Woven through this spellbinding narrative are the harrowing accounts of earlier explorers whose traces along the river warn us against romantic notions of the wild. Paddlenorth paints an indelible portrait of the spectacular northern landscape and eloquently explores what wilderness means to us.

JENNIFER KINGSLEY holds a BSC in biology and a MFA in writing and has worked as a guide and naturalist for more than a decade. Her writing and radio stories have been featured nationally and internationally. She lives in Ottawa, Ontario.

IN PUCKSTRUCK , STEPHEN Smith chronicles his wide-eyed and sometimes wincing wander through hockey’s literature, language, and history. On this journey to discover what the game has to say about who we are as Canadi-ans, he seeks to answer some essential riddles. Can hockey make you a better person? What exactly is the Swedes’ problem? Where did the hook check go? Should those men really be permitted to keep punching each other in the head? If hockey is the best of us, is it also the worst? Is there hope?

STEPHEN SMITH has written for Geist, McSweeney’s, the Globe and Mail, Canadian Geographic, and the New York Times Magazine. He lives in Toronto, where he tends a blog, puckstruck.com, that keeps an eye on hockey culture.

A voyage of self-discovery and regeneration across one of the planet’s wildest and most rugged landscapes.

Longlisted for the rbc Taylor Prize.

A dazzling rush through Canada’s hockey-infused culture by a new voice in Canadian literature.

“Jennifer Kingsley’s close observations offer the reader a very personal tour of the beauty as well as the physical, emotional, social and spiritual challenges of arctic

‘tripping.’ There’s a lot to like in this book—and a lot to be learned.” – JO DEURBROUCK, author of Anything Worth Doing

“Puckstruck is like nothing I’ve read before—fresh, funny, dazzling and brilliant. Can a hockey book ever really be described as Joycean? This one can.” – CHARLES FORAN

IN MARCH 2013 Michelle Stewart was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure due to her eating disorder and given only a few months to live. Determined to share her story while she still had the chance, Michelle began writing a revealing blog in which she chronicled her lifelong struggle and her experiences as a palliative patient. “I have had a 32-year dress rehearsal for the fate I now face,” she writes. This memoir is a collection of the most poignant pieces of writing from that blog, supplemented with previously unpublished pieces of original poetry from the author.

MICHELLE STEWART was Communications Director at the BC Ministry of Health before leaving to start her own firm in 2012. Before going into communications, Michelle had a ten-year career in journalism. She died from renal failure in 2014.

WHEN YOUR CHILD is threatening a meltdown in the grocery aisle, is it really possible to keep your cool, correct the behavior, and reinforce healthy develop-ment, all at the same time? In this easy-to-read, science-based book, parents, caregivers, and big people of all kinds will discover how discipline affects chil-dren’s development, why intervention should reinforce connection not separation, and why the disciplinary strategies that may have been used on us as children are not the ones that children really need.
