REVIEWS July and August Gatherings keeps on surprising

Owing to holidays and printing deadlines, we were unable to get the July Gathering reported last month, so we have included it with Augusts for a combined write up. As previously reported June was a massive Gathering meeting with all previous attendance records broken. With unsettled weather leading up to both the July and August events, we were expecting a drop in attendances – but did it hap-pen? Well, no it did not! July’s overall attend-ance was just about the same as June’s, and

Augusts only slightly down on that! In anticipation of an increased turnout at both events, the organisers set out the car park spaces, with more space being allocated to the classic cars and less to the public parking area. After all, historically July and August had been good months for the Gatherings and we did not want to be caught out with insufficient space in which to park the classics. With one eye on the weather forecast on each Thursday morning, and another on the downpour outside, it was looking a bit precarious. However, to be fair (and no weather puns intended) the forecast proved to be spot-on for both months and from lunchtime onwards we had warm sunshine and the roads were rapidly drying. Was it getting good enough for our supporters to come along? The answer to that is a resounding YES, as we again witnessed over 140 classic cars and over 30 classic bikes in the bike park at both meetings! In fact, we had a record number of 95 bikes turn up in July. Yet again, it was good to meet and greet our regular attendees, and extend a warm welcome to the new ones. We continue to hope that you will keep on coming. In July we had engaged the services of a professional drone operator to film parts of the event. This was all done in accordance with the CAA guidelines and rules. We will publicise where the film can be viewed when we have received it from the operator. Please note that we do not encourage or authorise any other drone activity in or around the Gathering unless specifically agreed in advance by the Gathering Committee and done so in accordance with the CAA guidelines and rules. We must ensure your safety is a priority. This time there will be just a few vehicles that were to be singled out. There are just so many now, but if you are interested then you should ensure you are at the next Gathering! In August we had a Doriot Flandrin Parant (DFP)– a rare early 20th century French car and this attracted a lot of attention. Also we had the usual mix of Brit-ish classics (Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Jaguars, Austin, Rover, Singer, Lotus, Triumph, MG, Jen-sen, Mini, a nice Vauxhall Cresta and Ford Zeph-yr) and others (Citroen, Trans-am, GM, Porsche,

Maserati, Jeep, Mazda, Volvo). In the motorcycle park we has a gorgeous Modial 175, Suzuki T20, a couple of Guzzis, BMWs some BSAs, Nortons, Velocettes, a Laverda, AJS, Triton, Honda and Sunbeam. Thanks as always must go to all who attended, whether showing a vehicle or not. Also to Andy and crew for the fine food he always prepares; to Anne and team for the bar (which as always did a great job); to Maureen, Carol and their crew of addi-tional volunteers for the cakes and coffee, to Janet and Loreen for running the raf-fles; to Debbie and Sue on the gate, to Steve P, Steve C for helping marshalling, to The Jackson Stopps Inn (Stretton) for donating a generous raffle prize, and to all the supporters who lend a hand as and when. Finally a big Thank You to the first response team for attending and we give thanks that they had nothing to do. Finally, a repeat appeal for help. We would welcome anyone who can give their time on the day to help set-up the venue, assist during the Gathering (say from 5:00 to dusk) and help clear up. Even if it’s only an hour, it would be appreciated. Similar-ly if you can help Maureen and Carol on the cakes, teas, coffees then that would be appreciated. Lastly – could you bake a cake and donate it to the Gathering? The increased numbers attending are putting a strain on our capacity to keep the cake eaters satisfied! If you can bake a cake it would be appreciated and help the cause. Maybe you could bake one at some time and freeze it? If so, please let me know so I can pass it on to the ladies in the kitchen. Thank you. Your cake would help raise money for YOUR Community Centre as all profits from these sales are helping pay for the new kitchen – so can you bake a cake and do a bit for the community? Pictures from this Gathering will be posted on the Gathering website (www.GreethamGathering.co.uk) in the coming days. We shall only post the rarer ones as we don’t want to keep publishing the same vehicles when they kindly sup-port us each time. We shall hold the remaining Gathering for 2017 on the 3rd Thurs-days of September, but will keep you all informed of any changes or news. Martin Fairbairn. Greetham WI August 2017 Our August meeting was an evening trip to Melton Mowbray, where we visited Ye Olde Porke Pie Shoppe, home of the famous Dickinson and Morris pork pie. Nine-teen members were greeted by head baker Stephen Hallam who introduced him-self, then delivered a serious health and safety warning, following which we scrubbed up, and were kitted out in fetching red hairnets and blue plastic aprons. Stephen explained the philosophy and history of the business, then it was our turn to get down to business. Each one of us had a mould (known as a Dolly), a neat ball of seasoned pork shoulder, a cut- out pastry lid, and a ball of pastry dough to mould into a pie shape. Watching Stephen do this made it look effortlessly easy, which of course it is not! We all had a tin of flour for rolling out and for using on our hands, but the dough was so perfectly made that no one had problems with it falling apart, tearing or sticking to the Dolly. We were shown how to seal the edges with beaten egg and how to crimp the top (“north, south, east and west”) to make the top look attractive. The pies were then put to rest under refrigeration for a few hours before being baked overnight. We then moved into the shop to see (and sample) some of the products on sale. As well as pork pies (In various shapes and sizes) fine cheeses, cakes and other deli-catessen products. Stephen told us more about the history of the business---the shop was opened by John Dickinson in 1851. They currently produce 4000 pies per week, rising to 30,000 in the week leading up to Christmas. The firm also owns the

Sausage Shop next door----there must be a great many pigs in the Vale of Belvoir! We learnt that their pies were granted Protected Geographical Indication status by the EU, meaning that only pies originating in a designated local region can be called authentic Melton Mowbray Pork Pies. Chris Parkin offered to drive over to Melton the following day to collect our efforts, and kindly offered us tea when we collected them. Although some of our efforts did not look quite as perfect as we had hoped, they tasted fabulous, and everyone thor-oughly enjoyed our visit. Next month’s meeting (September 11th) will be a talk by

Geoffrey Smith entitled “Behind the Scenes at the Chelsea Flower show”

Greetham Bowls Club Saturday the 19th August represented the end of the outdoor Bowling season and was marked at Greetham by Finals Day held at the Pavilion. This was organised by George Ruff and Sheila organised the finger buffet for our lunch break with cake contributions from our worthy ladies. Prize Cups were pre-sented to Yvonne Smith, Don McGarrigle and Malcolm Rylance. We shall be using the green (next to the Community Centre) for as long as the weath-er (and light) holds on Monday and Wednes-

day evenings from 6.30pm so if anyone wishes to come and join us and try out the sport we would be very pleased to welcome you as we are very short of members. John Hall

Sunday 6th August 2017- East v West Olympics Following on from last year’s cricket match Stephen Calnan (East) & Steve Bertuzzi (West) hatched a plan to have a day of games. The weather was perfect and Greggie had white lined the 5 a side pitch, welly wang area and 4 sprint lanes brilliantly, thanks. Tennis started early at 12.30pm, then had the final at 3pm, the East took an early lead 4 points to nil, and followed up with a massive 3 points to 1 win in Petanque (West having to borrow players!), The West came back with a strong 2 points to 1 win in the badminton and even though the adult footy was won easily by the East, the u11’s West pulled back for a 1 point each draw. Basketball shootout really got the team members and crowd going, it went down to the last shot when Toby (just

Page 8: Greetham Neighbourhood Plan Referendum · 2017-09-02 · GREETHAM COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2017 Greetham Neighbourhood Plan Referendum Thursday 7th September 2017 7am to 10pm

finished Petanque) came and shot the winning basket for the East! Onto the field events which were started about 4pm with egg & spoon (plenty of cheating/disqualifications here), next was the sack race, followed by the surprise relay, welly wang and tug o war. The West came back into the points winning the tug of war 2 points to 1 and also many of the field events in the u11’s going their way.

The East managed to just hold onto their lead winning the day 16 points to 14. A great day was had by all and certainly, helped by the fair weather and villagers taking part. Hopefully next year more competi-tors can take part especially in the u11’s as someone needs to catch Drew! Many thanks to Mo & Jackie for or-ganising the BBQ, cakes, ice cream/sweets (profit £177) and Anne for running the bar, and SJ, Katie and Pippa for managing the tombola (profit £125.60) and U11 games/sign up tent. Also thanks to marshals, referees Trevor, Chris-tian, Steve Crad/Peers and the Community Centre committee help-ing set up and McGoo for playing their Irish magic! Finally thanks to

the hard boiled egg bakers and gazeebo (SJ) & easy up marque use (Roly) Don’t forget if you want a game of tennis, turn up Mon or Tuesday nights at 7pm for a game or 2! BW, Stephen Calnan & Ste-

ve Bertuzzi

6.3 Initial discussion of “ Rutland local Plan 2016 - 2036, Local Plan Review, Consulta-

tion Draft Plan, July 2017”

GPC have received this document which proposes two development sites in Greetham. A

response will be drafted by the Planning Focus Group for discussion at the meeting on

September 14th.

The following points will be included:

RCC have stated that the Local Plan Review outweighs the Neighbourhood Plan.

GPC propose to challenge this.

GPC are concerned about the road (parking and traffic), sewerage (impact of yet an-

other 20 plus houses on an already overloaded system).

It is possible that by 2020 there will be a 50% increase of houses in Greetham.

Action: Planning Focus Group to produce draft response to RCC for discussion at the Sep-

tember meeting.

GPC are reminded that this is a Consultation Process.

GPC will seek to inform all Parishioners of the potential of this development through a poster which will be displayed on the Village Notice Board. 7 Focus groups. One bench has been offered by a member of the public for Great Lane, and a second bench funded (also for Great Lane). Permits required from RCC. Action: PH Report from Planning Focus Group. Following the ‘Call for sites ‘when the whole County were invited to provide submission of sites for development 4 sites were selected for Greetham. RCC have now issued the Local Plan Review Draft Plan. Proposals for Greetham as preferred sites are: 28 houses opposite Garden Centre (Exton Estate/ Cot-tesmore Parish) and mixed use development on the quarry site which comprises of 30 houses and 17 hectares of employment land. The Planning Focus Group held a meeting with RCC to clarify issues and seek answers to : Q1 –Allocation of Precept/ CIL on Exton site (GRE02) which is in Cottesmore Parish. Re-sponse: This is not a responsibility of the Local Plan. Q2 – Development outside of Cottesmore, whose Neighbourhood Plan states this is not desirable. Response: Local Plan outweighs Neighbourhood Plan. Q3. The Greetham Infrastructure will not support additional development. Response: Infrastructure is not considered until after the preferred sites are selected. Q4 Quarry Site. The area will accommodate more than the Local Plan shows. Response: The current plan will be for 30 houses and 17 hectares of employment land. A meeting was held between RCC and the quarry site owner. A record of this meeting is not available to GPC. Q5 The preservation of wild life was considered in the original planning for the quarry. Response: The need for development outweighs this. Q6. Where can documents which show how these sites were assessed be accessed?

Page 11: Greetham Neighbourhood Plan Referendum · 2017-09-02 · GREETHAM COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2017 Greetham Neighbourhood Plan Referendum Thursday 7th September 2017 7am to 10pm

The trees have been inspected and are in good health. 8 Floods, sewers and surface water / Conservation and environmental issues 2017 Fly infestations. Greetham Parish Council received no communication from Pa-rishioners regarding high fly infestation in 2017. Many comments were placed on the Greetham in Rutland Facebook page, which GPC cannot accept as communication, and individual complaints were received by RCC. RCC included a copy of their investi-gations to GPC despite the fact that there was no direct involvement with them. Hedge removal at Garden Centre site – RCC have responded and are considering action to be taken. Great Lane ‘hedge’. This is beginning to impact on the road. Highways to be consult-ed.
