News from District President

By Harriet Creswell, President, Greenwood District UMW

I first want to thank everyone who attended our meal-packing event at St. Mark on March

7. This was a really special Day Apart for the Greenwood District. Cathy Trevino and

Beatrice Ray did a wonderful job planning and implementing our day. There were more

than 102 people in attendance. If you didn’t get a chance to read Cathy’s article in The

Advocate, pick up the May issue and do so—nice picture of Willie Jo and Zella, too.

If you didn’t get to go to this year’s Spiritual Growth Retreat, you missed a great week-

end. The weather at Lake Junaluska was perfect! Our retreat leader, Yvette Richards, was dynamic, the music

was uplifting, and the communion service was inspirational. We left the retreat filled with hope for the future of

United Methodist Women. The Greenwood District was represented by 63 women, 11 of whom were first-

timers.

As we approach the summer season, it is time to think about attending Mission u. Mission u will be July 23-25 at

Spartanburg Methodist College. This year’s theme is Created for Happiness. The studies will be Latin America

People and Faith, The Church and People with Disabilities, and Created for Happiness: Understanding Your

Life in God. I hope we will have a large representation from the Greenwood District this year. Registration

forms are due by June 30.

Summer is also a good time to evaluate the work of your unit, making sure to include and plan activities and pro-

jects that fulfill the purpose of United Methodist Women. Included in this issue is your President’s Report. This

is how you report the things your unit has done in the past year to promote the work of United Methodist Women.

Please try to get these in to me by August 15.

Our District Annual Meeting will be September 26 at Republican United Methodist Church in McCormick. Start

making your plans now to attend. Joyce Crouch, District Vice-President, and the women at Republican are plan-

ning the event, and it is sure to be worth your while.

Keep in mind what United Methodist Women is all about, and continue to work to make great things happen for

women, families, children, and young people all around the world.

Stay cool, be blessed, and put God’s love into action every day!

— Harriet

Attention All Unit

Treasurers

All Units of United Methodist Women will need to pre-

sent their Pledge for year 2016 at our Annual Meeting on

September 26. Treasurers need to send your 3rd quarter

reports by August 15 in order for your church to receive

your 5-Star and Mission Certificates. Please call me at 864

Mission Echo

Mission Echo, newsletter of the SC Conference

UMW, is sent to all churches. If your church is not

receiving one, please check with Tina Waters, Con-

ference Communications Coordinator, to verify the

mailing address. The Echo is also available on the

SC UMC Conference website and on Facebook.

News from District Vice-President

By Joyce Crouch, Greenwood District UMW Vice-President

FILL MY CUP LORD WITH FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE ---

Can you believe June is here already with summertime fast approaching? It

seems like the New Year just started.

Some of us have just returned from the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Ju-

naluska. If you did not attend the retreat this year, you missed a very spiritual and up-

lifting event. I do encourage each of you to try to attend the retreat next year and, I

promise, you will receive a blessing.

As we move forward throughout the year, let’s try to find more ways to fulfill our PURPOSE and

to encourage attendance at our meetings and events. Also, let’s continue to try to find ways to bring our

younger women into United Methodist Women.

If you missed our 2015 Day Apart meal packing event at St. Mark UMC, you really missed out on

a great time of fun and fellowship. It was very inspiring to see everyone working together to pack the

meals, which were distributed locally.

I hope some of you will be able to attend the Mission U at Spartanburg Methodist College July 23-

25, 2015. The theme for the event is “Created for Happiness.”

Our next District event will be our District Annual Meeting which will be held on Saturday, Sep-

tember 26, 2015 at Republican UMC in McCormick. We welcome as our guest speaker, Rev. James Fri-

day, Greenwood District Superintendent. Please remember to get your reports in for the annual meeting

no later than August 15, 2015. There should be more information in this issue of News-A-Plenty.

“. . . You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Matthew 22:39

I would like to paraphrase John 12: 26 when Jesus spoke: If any woman

serve me, let her follow me, and where I am, there my servant will be; if any wom-

an serve me, my Father will honor her. So many of you are actively serving our

Lord in your individual churches, and that is a wonderful endeavor! I hope that

many of you will seek to serve beyond your local churches as officers in the Greenwood District UMW.

Pray about it, and when the telephone rings, please answer the call! We have vitally important offices to

fill.

Or you may contact me at [email protected] or phone me at 803-364-2320. - Carol

Program Resources

By Carolyn Cantrell, Coordinator of Program Resources

Hello Everyone,

If you missed Come Together Be Together you missed a very good day. The music and pro-

gram was outstanding and St. Mark made everyone feel so welcome. I enjoyed the day and

can’t wait to hear our speaker for the State Annual meeting in October. She is the pastor at

St. Mark.

On Page 32 of the Reading Program section are the different plans for the Reading Program. I hope that by

now you have chosen which plan you want to participate in. Selections can be from 2011-2015 reading list if

not included in previous reports. Regular reading of Response and New World Outlook

Bonus Books Count as 2 books – either as 2 books in one category or as one book in 2 categories.

Faith and Struggle on Smokey Mountain and What’s So Blessed About Being Poor count as one book in

Education for Mission and one book in Social Action. Good God, Lousy World and Me counts as 2 Books in

Education for Mission . Behind the Kitchen Door and Ecoliterate count as 2 books in Social Action.

UMW Mission studies can be read for credit in the following categories:

Spiritual Growth study for Spiritual Growth, Geographic study for Education for Mission, Issue study for So-

cial Action

Join the Reading program on-line Community at umwonline.org/groups/readingprogram. The address for mis-

sion resources is umwmissionresources.org. Response is essential reading for understanding the mission of

UMW, it is part of all four reading plans.

If you need any help with any resources please contact me at 864-223-0271 or [email protected]

Membership-Nurture-Outreach

By Sue Mitchell, Membership-Nurture-Outreach Coordinator

A big THANK YOU is going out to all units who turned in a report for the

2014 census report. We were able to count some units that did not respond

last year. Unfortunately, we still have units that did not respond and again

our numbers have dropped.

We have dropped 37 counted members as a district.

I am encouraged by the number of new cluster units this year. If you belong to a small unit that is having dif-

ficulties due to number of members, I encourage your unit to join with another church's unit. You will enjoy

meeting some new ladies and you will be able to continue your UMW affiliation.

Blessings,

Sue

News From Coordinators & Chairs

Page 13 - June, 2015 News-A-Plenty

Social Action

By Cathy Trevino, Social Action Coordinator

Wow!!! What an awesome month March was. First we had the Feeding Children Everywhere

meal packing event held at St. Mark’s River Street campus for our District Day Apart on

March 7. We raised more than enough to pack 15,000 meals and to support several of our lo-

cal Food Banks. The meals packed that day went to 96 Food Bank and the Salvation Army.

We had so much fun. I want to take this time to thank everyone for their donations and to

thank the United Methodist Men for coming out to help set up and take down and for those

that came out on a Saturday to help pack the meals. Several Youth groups came out and mem-

bers of a local Presbyterian Church as well as some of the guys from Faith Home. Be sure to check out the photos on

page _____ .For more information on how you can host an event check out their website at

www.feedingchildreneverywhere.com.

I was able to participate in the Proverbs 226 Forgive Me Dear event at Leath Correctional Facility for Women on

March 28. What a heartwarming experience it was. To see the looks on the kids faces as they saw their moms come

out was unforgettable. We had several ice breakers and a picnic lunch on blankets made by the inmates followed by a

birthday celebration complete with cake and singing to commemorate all of the missed birthdays of the mothers and the

children. More family time and then they held the foot washing ceremony where the ladies washed their children’s feet

and asked them for forgiveness. Each mom wrote a letter to her child/children asking them for forgiveness in not being

there for them when they needed them. After she washed their feet she put on a new pair of socks and tennis shoes that

were donated by Sketchers. At the end of the day, the children were given balloons and we all went outside. They

were told that if they forgave their moms to release the balloons. When almost 50 balloons went flying into the sky you

knew that something wonderful happened that day. This is a wonderful ministry to be a part of. The Proverbs 226

ministry is being done in all of the prisons in South Carolina. They need both male and female volunteers inside and

outside of the prisons. Your commitment would be about three times a year with the Forgive Me Dear event being in

March, a back pack packing event before school starts and a dance in late fall. Volunteers are also needed to stay be-

hind with the caregivers when the children are taken into the prison. Something for every comfort zone. Check out the

Proverbs 226 website and see when they will be conducting events in a prison near you. www.proverbs226.org .

Update on Hopewood Haven: They are currently serving 3 women at the home. The ladies are going to school and

volunteers are needed to take them to school and pick them up. Daytime help is also needed on Wednesdays. They

also need volunteers on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5pm until 10pm. They are still accepting donations of

paper products, paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates and cups etc. and feminine hygiene products. Monetary dona-

tions can be mailed to Hopewood Haven Ministries, Inc., P.O. Box 49566, Greenwood SC 29649. Checks should be

made payable to Hopewood Haven. Contact the Home if you wish to volunteer for the date and time of the next train-

ing at [email protected]. Unless you have been through the training you will not be able to deliver your

donations to the Home. Contact them at the above email address to arrange to meet someone to pick up your items. I

am hoping to go through the next training and will be glad to act as the go between for collecting items. Thank you to

all the Units that are already supporting this project. – Cathy

Happiness is the word at Mission u 2015 where Spartanburg Methodist College will be filled with signs of “Happiness” everywhere.

Mission u 2015 is worship, 4 in-depth mission studies, music, prayer, sharing, exploring, and fellowship. Mission u starts Thursday,

July 23 with registration, hospitality, and hands-on-missions at 1:00. Gathering music led by Laurel Jean Walden for opening plenary

is at 4:00. Mission u 2015 ends July 25 about 3:30 with door prizes and closing communion you don’t want to miss.

We are happy to announce that teen women ages twelve to eighteen will be on campus, where they will learn

about what United Methodist Women really is. The Youth study on Latin America will help them increase their

understanding of what life is like for Latin American youth, and will include hands-on mission activities, fellow-

ship, and fun. The youth study leaders are Selena Ruth Smith and Deborah Edwards. Youth and chaperone regis-

tration forms are at www.umcsc.org/umw . These must be mailed together. Consider sponsoring a youth and her

mother, or two youth.

Thursday evening adults will begin either the geographic study, “Latin America: People and Faith” or the social

issues study, “The Church and People with Disabilities.” IMPORTANT: You must register by June 15 to guaran-

tee your choice of these studies. Geographic study leaders are Barbara “Barb’ Brooks, Susan Brooks, Jane Hallum,

Rev. Marty Nason, and Patsy Whitaker. In the study of Latin America we learn about the culture, the people, their

faith, and their challenges. Social Issues study leaders are Rev. Pattie Gordon, Nettie Greene, Audrey Gunter, Lau-

rel Jean Walden, and Ernestine Wright. This repeat study leads us to discover how we can increase awareness of

gifts and challenges of those with visible and invisible disabilities and help the church to be more welcoming and

accessible to those with disabilities. We encourage persons with disabilities to attend Mission u and all UMW

events. We are working to make everyone feel welcome by providing needs’ specific accessibility. IMPORTANT:

Specific needs must be requested on the registration form for us to provide them. Don’t assume we know to

place you close to the speaker, or that you are vegetarian, or need to be close to an exit, or need meds refrigerated,

etc.

Friday offers a fiesta-type celebration of missions, the completion of the Latin America and the Church and Peo-

ple with Disabilities studies and will launch the spiritual growth study, “Created for Happiness: Understanding

Your Life in God,” led by Rev. Ken Nelson. All adult participants will take this study on the Biblical and Method-

ist tradition of the language of happiness. Books will be available for $10 each at Mission u or they can be ordered

online at www.umwmissionresources.org

Mission u participants visiting the Resource Room purchase current study books or books from the UMW Reading Program. They

enjoy buying donated handmade crafts which abound in the Craft Room. Funds raised go to the five SC missions supported by

SCCUMW. A “hands-on mission” station is just outside the craft room. Friday’s fiesta-type celebration will include multiple displays

throughout the hallways including some crafts, some dancing and service provider/mission information/sales. Everyone is invited to

wear ethnic clothing if you like. C.E.U.‘s. Lay Servant Recertification and scholarships are available. For information and registra-

tion visit www.umcsc.org/umw or contact Rebecca Rochester, Mission u 2015 Dean, at 864-466-6981. We’ll share happiness as we

learn how God is calling us to join in the transformation of the world.
