Greens Committee Meeting

• Agenda

• Discuss past weekend’s course setup

• Greens Covering

• Pigments for greens

• Work on #7 fairway

• Drainage on croquet lawn

• Goals for maintenance staff to have completed in November

• Q & A

Covering Greens

Allow plant to go dormant

Dormancy is a defense mechanism

Tells the plant to stop using

Carbohydrates

They’ll be needed for spring “green up”

Covering Greens

• Why do you cover the greens?

To protect against winter injury

Minimal survival temp. for Bermudagrass is

19 degrees

• When should you cover the greens?

25 degrees is the threshold

• Not an exact science

Depending on temperature trend for the

next few days

Covering Greens

• Black Tarps vs. White Tarps

• White tarps = cloth type material, more cumbersome, hold moisture

• Black tarps = synthetic material, light weight, challenging in windy

conditions

Black tarps have been shown to provide enough protection in the

prevention of winter injury.

• Both tarps used when temps approach 19 degrees and below

Covering Greens

• Exercise caution when uncovering

for play.

• Damage can be done to the plant

when tarps are removed prior to

thawing.

• Questions?

Is That Paint?

• Purpose of spraying pigments

provides green color during dormancy

no one likes putting on brown

arguably better for turf than overseeding

• Pigments vs. Paint

Paint = longer residual color, more damaging to spray equipment

Pigments = shorter residual color, better for equipment, easier to

clean up.

Spraying Pigments on Greens

• Why not overseed?

Eliminate transition periods

Less stressful on Bermuda base

Ease of maintenance

Promotes longer life for Bermuda

More cost efficient

Spraying Pigments on Greens

• When do you start spraying?

Typically when you start to see the

Bermuda going “off-color”

• We will be spraying our first winter

pigment application within the next

couple of weeks.

Correcting drainage on #7 fairway

• Old drain boxes broken

• Improve grading around drainage boxes

• More aesthetically pleasing

Drainage @ Croquet Lawn

• What was the need?

Redirect water from new addition

• Looks like croquet lawn slopes towards pro shop, how will this fix the issue?

We ensured trench line had fall away from building and in the

direction we want the water to go.

To Do List for November

• Complete raising canopy and thinning trees between the driving range and fairway

• Drains on #7

• Set winter pin placements

• Complete first application of pigments on greens

•BLOW, BLOW, and BLOW some more
