SERMON NOTES: WEEK 1, AUGUST 7, 2016Rev. Dirk RodgersBE ONE MAKE ONE GLORIOUS

Today’s Core Question: "Why Does Glory Matter?"

Reason #1: Because Jesus __________________ for It

“After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed. Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.” John 17:1 (NIV – 2011)

Reason #2: Because It Brings __________________ __________________

“For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.” John 17:2 (NIV – 2011)

Reason #3: Because It Truly __________________ __________________

“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” John 17:3 (NIV – 2011)

Essential Truths:

1. Who Is __________________ ?

2. Who Is __________________ ?

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.” Hebrews 1:1-3 (NIV – 2011)

“I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” John 17:4-5 (NIV – 2011)

Next Steps

Reflect this week on these two Essential Truths by reading from the following scriptures each day, and by praying that God’s Spirit will guide you into the truth that He wants you to hear.

- Who is God? - Read Psalm 8, and write out what this Psalm teaches us about God.

- Who is Jesus? – Read John 1, and write out what this chapter teaches us about Jesus.

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13 (NIV – 2011)

SERMON NOTES (continued)

CONNECT GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE

OPENINGWhy do you think that there are so many differing views of God in the world?

GOING DEEPER 1. What do you think the term, "glory" means?

2. Read John 17:1-5. Why do you think Jesus prays for glory?

3. How does the Father glorify the Son, and the Son glorify the Father?

4. Why can eternal life only come from knowing who God truly is?

5. Why must we know Jesus in order to truly know God?

CHALLENGE - Read Psalm 8, and discuss how this passage helps us to answer the question, Who Is God?

- Read John 1, and discuss how this passage helps us to answer the question, Who Is Jesus?

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” John 16:13 (NIV – 2011)
