SERMON NOTES: WEEK 4, JULY 24, 2016Rev. Tim CarpenterBE ONE MAKE ONE ENGAGEShare: What is the Gospel?

Today’s Core Question: What is The Gospel?

To make disciples, we must ____________________, ____________________, ____________________.

Today we will look at what it means to Share.

What is The Gospel?4 Key Facts About The Gospel.1. The Gospel means “____________________”.

2. ____________________ are not the Gospel.

3. The Gospel is ____________________.

4. The Gospel is the ____________________.

The Gospel Defined:The Gospel is the good news that even though we have all done evil, rebelled against the Creator God, and deserve God’s punishment, Jesus Christ has taken responsibility for all of our wrong-doings in life, and He offers forgiveness and eternal life to everyone who will repent of their evil, accept His forgiveness, and entrust their lives to Him.

6 Parts of The Story: Explaining The Gospel.1. ____________________ Psalm 24:1 – “The Earth is the LORDS and everything in it; the world, and all who live in it.”

2. ____________________ Sin impacts 4 key relationships that have been broken: ____________________, ____________________, ____________________, and ____________________. Titus 3:3 – “At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.”

3. ____________________ Colossians 1:15-19 – 15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him…”

SERMON NOTES (continued)

OPENINGShare some thoughts about Sunday’s sermon. What struck you the most from what Pastor Tim preached?

GOING DEEPER• Pastor Tim quoted Tim Keller saying, “The Gospel is not the ABCs of the Christian life; it’s the A-to-Z

of the Christian life.” How does the truth of the Gospel (the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ) impact various areas of your life?

• Can you recite the 6 parts of The Story as shared by Pastor Tim and written by Kevin DeYoung? Perhaps as a group you can remember them all

CHALLENGE1. Work on memorizing the 6 parts of The Story and share them with someone this week.

Perhaps you start off sharing them with a fellow Bethany member – that’s a great start. Encourage one another as you work on memorizing the core truths of the Gospel.

2. Get on YouTube and search for “Tim Keller The Centrality of the Gospel”. Take 45 minutes and listen to what Dr. Keller has to share about how important the Gospel is.

CONNECT GROUP DISCUSSION GUIDE

4. ____________________ Romans 5: 6-8 – 6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

5. ____________________ Revelation 21:1-4 – 1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”[a] for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.

6. ____________________ Romans 10:9-11 – 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”
