2 GreenIT Best Practices

Page 3

Appendix 2: GreenIT Best Practices Since the first AIIA Sustainable Futures Forum in 2007, there has been a growing awareness of the different GreenIT best practices that can be adopted by organisations to reduce carbon emissions. These have been captured at a high level and cover the following main areas:

1. Governance

2. Procurement

3. Stewardship

4. IT Infrastructure

5. Print Management

6. Power Management

7. Managed Services

8. Business Process Re-engineering

When considering each of the following best practices, it’s important to put it into context of the current situation of your organisation. Not all of them will be relevant due to the size of your organisation and some may need to be postponed for future implementation as your organisation may not be ready for them yet. To assist with identifying at what stage its best to adopt these best practices into your organisation, each point has been correlated with the five pillar framework that is described in Section 4.3 – Information Technology – Implementing GreenIT products and services. In summary, the five pillars are:

• Pillar 1: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water use within the span of control of the ICT department.

• Pillar 2: ICT department contribution to measuring and reporting enterprise greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water use.

• Pillar 3: ICT department contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water use within core enterprise processes.

• Pillar 4: ICT department contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water use within the enterprise value chain.

• Pillar 5: ICT department contribution to business transformation necessary for a carbon economy.

The ‘GreenIT Best Practices’ list is a high level framework. It is possible that other factors could be considered on this list and AIIA sees this evolving over time – with input from other organisations.

3Hazardous Materials in IT Equipment

Page 8

Appendix 3: Hazardous Materials in IT EquipmentA number of hazardous materials that have significant environmental and health impacts are used in the manufacture of IT equipment. In an effort to minimise the use of these materials, a certification program called the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive (RoHS) has been established. The directive restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment. These are:

Toxin Health Impacts

Lead (Pb) Lead is a poisonous metal that can damage nervous connections (especially in young children) and cause blood and brain disorders.

Mercury (Hg) Mercury is a heavy metal which is extremely toxic. Specific occupational exposure limits have been established.

Cadmium (Cd) Cadmium and several cadmium-containing compounds are known carcinogens and can induce many types of cancer.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+) Hexavalent chromium compounds are genotoxic carcinogens. Chronic inhalation of hexavalent chromium compounds increases the risk of lung cancer (lungs are especially vulnerable, followed by fine capillaries in kidneys and intestine).

Polybrominated biphelyls (PBBs)

Exposure to genetically susceptible mice is known to cause immunotoxicity and disorders related to the central nervous system.

Polybrominated diphynl ether (PBDEs)

Published studies express concern because exposure to PBDEs impairs development of nervous system. PDBEs has also been shown to have hormone disrupting effects, particularly on estrogen and thyroid hormones.

Emissions Inventory Tool (EMIT)

Cambridge Environmental Research Consultants (CERC) was established in 1986 with the aim of making use of new developments in environmental research from Cambridge University and elsewhere for practical purposes.

EMIT is an Emissions Inventory Tool. EMIT can be used to store, manipulate and assess emissions data from a variety of sources.

Emissions data held in EMIT can be used for:

• Local air pollution studies of toxic pollutants;

• Greenhouse Gas emissions inventories;

• Estimating emissions for use in IPPC applications; and

• Road traffic noise mapping studies.

EMIT is particularly useful for emission-reduction scenario testing, for example to investigate the effect of Low Emission Zones and Home Zones in urban areas, and ways of reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions as a step towards meeting Agenda 21 or Kyoto targets.

Green Broadband GreenIT/Broadband and Cyber-infrastructure Overview

One of the greatest threats to our future society and economy is global warming. It is estimated that the CO2 emissions of the ICT industry alone exceeds the carbon output of the entire aviation industry. The ICT industry and research community has a collective responsibility to help address this problem. Fortunately, as compared to the aviation industry, the ICT industry and research community has the tools at hand to reduce its direct CO2 output to zero and the additional capability of enabling other sectors of society to reduce their carbon footprint through carbon rewards rather than unpopular carbon taxes.

Governments around the world are wrestling with the challenge of how to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The current preferred approaches are to impose carbon taxes and implement various forms of cap and trade or carbon offset systems. However another approach to help reduce carbon emission is to reward those who reduce their carbon footprint. It is estimated that consumers control or influence over 60percent of all CO2 emissions. As such, one possible reward system of trading bits and bandwidth for carbon, or sometimes called gCommerce is to provide homeowners with free fiber to the home or free wireless products and other electronic services such as ebooks and eMovies if they agree to pay a premium on their energy consumption which will encourage them to reduce emissions by turning down the thermostat or using public transportation. Not only does the consumer benefit, but this business model also provides new revenue opportunities for network operators, optical equipment manufacturers, and eCommerce application providers.

Organisation Description

ANU GreenIT strategies Graduate Certificate in Green ICT Strategies COMP7310

ICT is both part of the problem and part of the solution to climate change. A study sponsored by the Australian Computer Society has shown that computers and telecommunications equipment in Australia generated 7.94Mt of carbon dioxide in 2005, 1.52 percent of national emissions. This course investigates the contribution of ICT to carbon emissions and how technology can reduce those emissions.

This subject is drawn from practices being developed in the public and private sectors internationally. Implementation methodologies and assessment tools currently being field-tested are introduced. Qualification schemes and accreditation are yet to be established and it is possible those completing this subject may be involved in that development.

This course was developed in conjunction with the Australian Computer Society. The Learning Outcomes have been designed for Level 5 competencies of the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) common reference model. More information is on the course webpage.

The Natural Edge Project – Sustainable IT

The Engineering Sustainable Solutions Program Sustainable IT Lecture Series

This Lectures Series offers a solution that addresses many barriers to Sustainable IT while optimising costs and minimising negative environmental impact. The focus is on the product and service provision components of Sustainable IT. Specifically, these lectures describe a holistic, end-to-end solution for IT systems of medium and large enterprises. This solution consists of:

• Product service systems: also known as sustainable services and systems and eco-efficient services There are several product service systems topologies. These Lectures describe the use services topology as applied to IT products and services. In this topology, customers purchase the services of some or all IT hardware and software products through leasing, renting, sharing or pooling while the vendor maintains the ownership, responsibility and stewardship of the products. The aims are to remove aged technology with minimal environmental impact while customers maximise their investment on their IT systems. Vendors can be either an external company or the customer’s IT business function, operating largely independently.

• Sustainable IT products: i.e. those items of client and data centre equipment that are resource efficient to manufacture, transport and operate, and have low-to-no adverse health impacts on people and the environment throughout their lifecycles.
