GreenhousePower & CO2Fertilisation

Greenhouse Cogeneration / CHP

Gas engines are highly efficient atproviding the stimulus for the growthof plants, whilst in parallel providinga flexible supply of electrical power.Heat, light and carbon dioxide (CO2)all promote plant growth. Gasengines provide electrical power atthe alternator and when in acogeneration configuration can alsorecover useful heat. Carbon dioxideis released in the exhaust gases ofthe engine as a by-product of thecombustion of the fuel gas. Electricalpower can be used to provide energyfor lighting or can be exported to thegrid, heat can be stored as hot waterfor use when needed and finally theCO2 can be scrubbed and used topromote plant growth.

Benefits

— Efficiency levels up to 95%,therefore high contribution toresource conservation andmaximisation of profits

— Provides power to grid at timesof maximum demand hencereceiving highest power saleprices

— Time-independent supply of CO2and heat through heat storage

— High quality CO2

Carbon Dioxide & Plant Growth

Plants grow by converting CO2 tocarbon through photosynthesis. Airgenerally contains approximately350 ppm of CO2. Optimal CO2 levelsdepend on the type of plant andgenerally lie above 700 ppm. Withincreased artificial lighting, aspresent in greenhouses, plantsabsorb even more CO2. If thegreenhouse atmosphere is enrichedwith CO2, the temperature kept on aconstant level and sufficient lighting, provided plant growth andconsequently the harvest yield canbe increased significantly.

When burning natural gas in gasengines, approximately 0.2kg CO2 isproduced per kWh of energy input. This CO2 is present in the exhaust ofgas engines in a concentrationapproximately 5-6% by volume.

Energy Usage

The energy created by gas enginecogeneration / combined heat andpower systems in greenhouses canbe used in various ways. Theelectricity can provide the power forthe artificial lighting and/or be fedinto the electricity grid. The heatefficiently meets the greenhouse’srequirements. In addition, theclimate-relevant CO2 of the engineexhaust gas serves as a fertiliser forthe plants.

Exhaust Purification

After the purification of the exhaustgas with special catalytic converters(SCR and oxidation catalyticconverters), the exhaust gas iscooled down by a heat exchanger toapproximately 55°C and supplied tothe greenhouse for CO2 enrichment.A measurement device thatconstantly monitors the exhaust gaslevels ensures maximum safety forvegetation.

Key Figures

Efficient operation is possible withapproximately 1hectare (ha = 2.47acres) or larger greenhouse areas:— CO2 fertilisation is suitable fornearly all plant types

— CO2 fertilisation withsimultaneous heat supply:dimensioning for 0.5 MWel/ha

— CO2 fertilisation withsimultaneous heat supply andillumination dimensioning for0.35 MWel/ha

— Illumination suitable forvegetables (e.g. tomatoes orpeppers) and for flowers (e.g.chrysanthemums or roses)

— The decisive factors foreconomical plant operation arethe high electrical efficiency, combined with the usage of heatand CO2 fertilisation

Our Competence

Clarke Energy has installed anumber of greenhouse power plantsin the UK and France. This coupledwith our comprehensive experienceof natural gas generation means weare ideally placed to support yourgas generation project.
