INTRODUCTION

GreenFormat™ is a CSI Format that identifies and organizes the sustainability measuring properties of products. It will help manufacturers accurately identify key product characteristics and provide designers, constructors and building operators with basic information to help meet “green” requirements. The Format consists of a questionnaire to obtain specific information from manufacturers about the sustainability of the products they produce, and the construction materials and processes they use. The information shared in the questionnaire will be made available to designers and other construction professionals in GreenFormat through a website (www.greenformat.com). GreenFormat allows manufacturers to identify the sustainable criteria, standards and certifications that apply to their products, and gives designers, constructors and others an easy way to evaluate the various sustainable aspects of materials, products and processes. Sustainable information reported in GreenFormat is grouped into five categories, each containing individual sub-categories and questions about product sustainability. The categories are organized with topics more likely to be important to design decisions first. This flexible structure will adapt to anticipated changes in the industry. As sustainability issues evolve, new topics and questions will be added in the appropriate category, and existing topics and questions that become obsolete or change will be dropped if necessary. The structure supports the common methods of specifying with information needed for Reference Standard, Performance, Descriptive and Proprietary specifications in category 2. Category 3 addresses the product’s characteristics across its lifecycle. GreenFormat works in conjunction with MasterFormat™ and can be applied to all construction products and product categories.

APPLICATION GUIDE

Definitions Category: a portion of the questionnaire that summarizes information contained about the product. GreenFormat Version 1.0 uses five categories.

Includes: means the work result is included in the title, and generally implies it is the primary title.

Sub-Category: a portion of a category within the questionnaire which includes information about the product.

Relationship to MasterFormat™ GreenFormat is organized according to MasterFormat number and title relating to the work results included in the individual product listing. Since GreenFormat is intended for reporting sustainability characteristics of products and materials, the information listed under GreenFormat is best organized by the complementary structure of MasterFormat. More information about MasterFormat, its numbering system and titles, may be obtained at www.MasterFormat.com.

A designer or contractor can use a MasterFormat division number or title to search for a product in GreenFormat.

Relationship to SectionFormat™ GreenFormat is structured similar to SectionFormat:

A sub-category may contain additional sub-categories. The degree to which information is subdivided depends on the complexity of and extent of the section.

Most GreenFormat categories and sub-categories are optional and should be included only as required to describe the information being presented.

The categories and sub-categories are provided in a logical hierarchy of detail. The degree to which information is provided depends on the complexity and extent of the information and the nature of the subject being described.

Relationship to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and other Building Rating Systems Throughout GreenFormat there may be information that is related to a specific LEED rating credit. Any information that corresponds to a LEED rating credit is noted in this document. For details of the particular LEED credit, please reference GreenFormat Questionnaire Version 1.0 Appendix 4.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND QUESTIONNAIRE 1.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION These fields are generally, used to categorize the information by MasterFormat number(s), manufacturer's name, product name or trade name (with a manufacturer's brief description of the product), and date the information is provided. This is manufacturer-friendly, and allows manufacturers the flexibility to describe either standard products and product lines or unique one-of-a-kind products. Users can search this information by MasterFormat number, by manufacturer name, by trade name, or by a keyword search. It is flexible enough to also link to UniFormat and OmniClass classification systems.

Manufacturer Tip: How should “product type” be defined for the purposes of filling out the form? Choosing one specific style or SKU may be too narrow (such as if most answers would be similar for a wider product group), but a full product line may be too broad (for example, grouping together products with and without a certain certification, would reduce the informational value of the form). Suggested categories: all products covered under a certification all similar products in a collection a segment of a product line that has similar environmental characteristics

Product specific questions will allow you to answer with a range (e.g. recycled content) and a "Manufacturer Comments" text box will allow you to enter clarification (e.g. recycled content varies by color). Additional entries for other product types/categories can be created.

1.2 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION GreenFormat is filtered by MasterFormat number to limit the questions seen by a manufacturer to those relevant to the specific division. If the product can be specified in multiple MasterFormat divisions, add multiple numbers (up to 5) and the product will appear in multiple locations in MasterFormat and the questions will be expanded to cover all divisions identified.

Manufacturer Tip: If the product does not fit well into a MasterFormat division (or divisions) it may be advisable to work with the entire unfiltered Format. Additionally, in some cases, there may be questions that are filtered out for most products in a division that could be relevant to selected products that otherwise fit in that division. 2.0 PRODUCT DETAILS This category addresses three of the four different methods of specifying reference standard specification, performance specification, and descriptive specification. The fourth method of specifying, the proprietary method, would use the information presented in Category 1.

Manufacturer Tip: This category includes questions that are most likely to be asked by specifiers and other design professionals. When deciding what product(s) or product line to include in a single listing, it may help to browse the questions in this category and think about what grouping of products would allow you to answer the questions most clearly.

2.1 SUSTAINABLE STANDARDS AND CERTIFICATIONS Sustainable Standards and Certifications relates to the information which a specifier would include in the Quality Assurance article of a specification, and it provides verification of environmental claims. This acknowledges not only the importance of the Quality Assurance article in CSI's SectionFormat™ document, but is also necessary if the specifier is writing a reference standard specification. The information provided in this category allows the specifier to search for a product based on its meeting a sustainable standard.

This category is used to provide substantiation of environmental claims, by self-declared compliance with sustainable standards or criteria, or by second or third party certification of compliance with sustainable criteria. This category includes only certifications and standards with clearly defined criteria for acceptance. Certification of specific single attribute manufacturer claims, such as Scientific Certification Systems certifying the percentage of recycled content, or comprehensive third party product information disclosures like Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that do not include specific criteria for acceptance are included in later categories. Not all certifications pertain to all products or manufacturers.

The full list of referenced standards and certifying organizations can be found in Appendix 2. If the material meets a standard or is certified by an organization that is not listed, please include it in “Other”, per the appropriate category.

2.1.1 Third Party Certification – Whole Product Sustainability

This certification indicates that an independent third party has tested a product’s compliance to a multi-attribute standard that attempts to cover all aspects of a product’s life cycle. Comprehensive third party product information disclosures like LCA and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) that do not include specific criteria for acceptance are included in later categories.

Second party certification indicates that a government, industry organization, or other invested party has set a standard for sustainable criteria, and the organization certifies that the manufacturer complies with stated sustainable criteria. Many countries have a single government-recognized organization to provide certification. In the USA however, standard development and product certification may be conducted by a variety of different entities. These certifications indicate that a second party has tested a product’s compliance to a multi-attribute standard that attempts to cover all key aspects of a product’s sustainability. 2.1.7 Second Party Certification – Energy

This certification indicates that a government, industry organization, or other second party certifier has set a standard for energy efficiency or other energy criteria, and the organization certifies that the manufacturer complies with stated sustainable criteria. For example, EPA oversees the Energy Star label for a wide range of energy-efficient products. This category contains questions that relate to LEED rating system points. For specifics, see the GreenFormat-LEED Relationships Table.

2.1.9 Self-Declaration of Compliance - Whole Product Sustainability

Self-declaration of compliance, or 'first party' certification, indicates that a manufacturer or supplier declares the product meets a specific listed standard. For ANSI approved standards like NSF-140, a manufacturer must have the option to have the product first-, second- or third-party certified to the standard. While a manufacturer may self declare that their carpet meets NSF-140, many manufacturers obtain certification by an independent third party for the added credibility that independent assessment provides.

This certification indicates that the manufacturer or supplier declares that product meets a specific listed standard. For example, a paint manufacturer might declare that their paint meets the VOC requirements of GreenSeal GS-11, but this has not been certified by another party. This certification indicates that the manufacturer declares that product meets a specific listed standard. For example, a manufacturer might declare that their product met DOE FEMP Designated standards, However this has not been verified by a third party authorized to certify to that particular standard, or reviewed by the agency or second-party organization responsible for awarding a particular certification.

2.2 SUSTAINABLE PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

Sustainable Performance Criteria relates to the product's sustainable performance during use, and would be of primary interest when writing a performance specification or when a product's performance is being evaluated or compared to other products.

Manufacturer Tip: Questions in this category are organized by MasterFormat 2004 division (2.2.XX, with XX referring to the first two digits of the MasterFormat number). Questions only need to be filled out in the appropriate division (if viewing the filtered form, the other questions should not be visible). 2.2.99 is reserved for any additional performance testing (sustainability related or otherwise) that is key for the product that a designer or specifier would want to search on (Please recall that GreenFormat is not designed for SKU-level data, and so information that is only relevant at that level should not be included here, unless a range provides helpful information).

3.0 PRODUCT LIFECYCLE This category describes the phases of a construction material's life cycle that a design professional may evaluate when selecting a sustainable product. It is not an attempt to collect all the information necessary to perform a life cycle analysis of a product, but only to identify sustainability questions that relate to each phase of a product's entire life cycle. However it is also noted in this category whether a product has gone through a comprehensive LCA. APPENDIX 1 – GLOSSARY The following is a partial list of terms and definitions used within GreenFormat, and other related terms and definitions to assist the user in understanding the sustainable concepts in GreenFormat.* Standards referenced in GreenFormat may include additional definitions within that standard.

Adhesive: Any substance that is used to bond one surface to another surface by attachment. Adhesives include adhesive bonding primers, adhesive primers, and any other primer.

Albedo: Synonymous with solar reflectance (see below).

Anti-Corrosive Paints: Coatings formulated and recommended for use in preventing the corrosion of ferrous metal substrates.

Bioaccumulation/biomagnification: A process where chemicals are retained in fatty body tissue and increase in concentration over time. Biomagnification is the increase of tissue accumulation in species higher in the natural food chain as contaminated food species are eaten.

Biodegradable: Capable of being decomposed by natural biological processes; the ability of a substance to be broken down physically and/or chemically by microorganisms. For example, many chemicals, food scraps, cotton, wool, and paper are bio-degradable; plastics and polyester generally are not.

Biomass: Plant material such as trees, grasses, and crops that can be converted to heat energy to produce electricity.

By-Product: Materials, other than the intended product, generated as a result of an industrial process.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2): The greenhouse gas whose concentration is being most affected directly by human activities. CO2 also serves as a reference to compare all other greenhouse gases. The major source of CO2 emissions is fossil fuel combustion. CO2 emissions are also a product of forest clearing, biomass burning, and non-energy production processes such as cement production. Atmospheric concentrations of CO2 have been increasing at a rate of about 0.5% per year and are now about 30% above preindustrial levels.

Carbon Sequestration: The uptake and storage of carbon. Trees and plants, for example, absorb carbon dioxide; release the oxygen, and store the carbon. Fossil fuels were at one time biomass and continue to store the carbon until burned.

Carbon Sinks: Carbon reservoirs and conditions that take in and store more carbon (carbon sequestration) than they release. Carbon sinks can serve to partially offset greenhouse gas emissions. Forests and oceans are common carbon sinks.

Chain-of-Custody (COC): A document that tracks the movement of a wood product from the forest to a vendor and is used to verify compliance with FSC guidelines. A "vendor" is defined as the company that supplies wood products to project contractors or subcontractors for on-site installation.

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs): Hydrocarbons used as refrigerants that deplete the stratospheric ozone layer.

Closed-Loop Recycling: 1) Reclaiming or reusing wastewater for non-potable purposes in an enclosed process. 2) Recycling in which products at the end of useful life are used as a resource to remanufacture the same product. (Source: University of York Science Education Group)

Composite Wood: A product consisting of wood or plant particles or fibers bonded together by a synthetic resin or binder (that is, plywood, particle-board, oriented strand board (OSB), medium density fiberboard (MDF), composite door cores.)

Compostable: Material which breaks down to CO2, water, inorganic compounds, and biomass at a rate consistent with other compostable materials and leaves no visible, distinguishable or toxic residue. (Source: ASTM D 6400-04)

Construction Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Management Plan: A document specific to a building project that outlines measures to minimize contamination in the building during construction, and to flush the building of contaminants prior to occupancy.

Construction Waste Management: Diversion of construction, demolition, and land-clearing debris from disposal in landfills and incinerators; to redirect recyclable recovered materials back to the manufacturing process.

Contaminant: An unwanted airborne constituent that may reduce acceptability of the air. (Source: ASHRAE 62.1-2004)

Daylighting: The controlled admission of natural light into space through glazing with the intent of reducing or eliminating electric lighting.

Deconstruction: The process of taking apart a structure with the primary goal of preserving the value of all useful building materials, so that they may be reused or recycled. (Source: California Integrated Waste Management Board)

Disposal: The discharge, deposit, injection, dumping, spilling, leaking, or placing of any solid waste or hazardous waste into the environment (land, surface water, ground water, and air).

Ecosystem: A basic unit of nature that includes a community of organisms and their non-living environment linked by biological, chemical and physical process.

Embodied Energy: Energy used during the entire life cycle of the product for manufacturing, transporting, and disposing of the product, as well as the inherent energy captured within the product itself.

Emission: The release or discharge of a substance into the environment. Generally refers to the release of gases or particulates into the air.

Emissivity: The ratio of the radiation emitted by a surface to the radiation emitted by a blackbody at the same temperature.

Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP): A United States federal-wide program (Executive Order 13101) that encourages and assists Executive agencies in the purchasing of Environmentally Preferable Products and Services.

Energy Conservation Measures: Installations of equipment or systems, or modifications of equipment or systems, for the purpose of reducing energy use and/or costs.

Graywater: Wastewater discharged from lavatories, bathtubs, showers, clothes washers, and laundry sinks. (Source: International Plumbing Code)

Greenhouse Gas (GHG): Gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and chloroflurocarbons (CFCs) that are relatively transparent to the higher-energy sunlight, but trap lower-energy infrared radiation.

Greenwash: Disinformation disseminated by an organization so as to present an environmentally responsible public image. (Source: Oxford English Dictionary)

Heat Island Effect: Effect that occurs when warmer temperatures are experienced in urban landscapes compared to adjacent rural areas as a result of solar energy retention on constructed surfaces.

Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC): Refrigerants that deplete stratospheric ozone layer.

Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC): Refrigerants that do not deplete stratospheric ozone layer, but do contribute to global warming are not environmentally benign.

Impervious Surfaces: Surfaces that promote runoff of precipitation volumes instead of infiltration into the subsurface.

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ): The nature of air inside the space that affects the health and well-being of building occupants.

Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Strategies: Strategies that include issues related to indoor air quality (IAQ) such as ventilation effectiveness and control of contaminants.

Industrial Waste: Unwanted materials produced in or eliminated from an industrial operation and categorized under a variety of headings, such as liquid wastes, sludge, solid wastes, and hazardous wastes.

Infrared or Thermal Emittance: A parameter between 0 and 1 (or 0% and 100%) that indicates the ability of a material to shed infrared radiation (heat). The wavelength range for this radiant energy is roughly 3 to 40 micrometers. Most building materials (including glass) are opaque in this part of the spectrum, and have an emittance of roughly 0.9.

LEED®: "Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design" Green Building Rating System®, a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance sustainable buildings, sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Life Cycle Analysis (LCA): An evaluation of the environmental effects of a product or activity holistically, by analyzing the entire life cycle of a particular material, process, product, technology, service, or activity.

Life Cycle Cost (LCC) Method: A technique of economic evaluation that sums over a given study period the costs of initial investment (less resale value), replacements, operations (including energy use), and maintenance and repair of an investment decision (expressed in present or annual value terms).

Life Cycle Inventory (LCI): An accounting of the energy and waste associated with the creation of a new product through use and disposal.

Light Pollution: Waste light from building sites that produces glare, is directed upward to the sky or is directed off the site.

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS): Printed material concerning a hazardous chemical, or extremely hazardous substance, including its physical properties; hazards to personnel; fire and explosion potential; safe handling recommendations; health effects; fire fighting techniques; reactivity, and proper disposal. Originally established for employee safety by OSHA.

Minimized or Minimization: Measures or techniques that reduce the amount of wastes generated during industrial production processes; this term also is applied to recycling and other efforts to reduce the volume of waste going into landfills. This term is interchangeable with waste reduction and waste minimization.

Off-gassing: The emission of volatile organic compounds from synthetic and natural products.

Paints: Liquid, liquefiable, or mastic compositions that are converted to a solid protective, decorative, or functional adherent film after application as a thin layer. These coatings are intended for on-site application to interior or exterior surfaces of residential, commercial, institutional, or industrial buildings.

Perviousness: The percent of the surface area of a paving material that is open and allows moisture to pass through the material and soak into the earth below the paving system.

Porous Sealant: A substance used as a sealant on porous materials. Porous materials have tiny openings, often microscopic, in which fluids may be absorbed or discharged. Such materials include, but are not limited to, wood, fabric, paper, corrugated paperboard, and plastic foam.

Post-Consumer Material: Waste material generated by households or by commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities in their role as end-users of the product, that can no longer be used for its intended purpose. This includes return of materials from the distribution chain. Examples include construction and demolition debris; materials collected through curbside and drop-off recycling programs; discarded products, and urban maintenance waste. (Source: ISO 14021)

Post-Consumer Recycled Content: Percentage of post-consumer material, by weight, incorporated into the product.

Pre-Consumer Material: Material diverted from the waste stream during the manufacturing process. Excluded is reutilization of materials such as rework, re-grind or scrap generated in a process and capable of being reclaimed within the same process that generated it. Examples include planer shavings, sawdust, chips, sunflower seed hulls, walnut shells, culls, trimmed materials, and obsolete inventories. (previously referred to as Post-Industrial). Pre-Consumer Recycled Content: Percentage of pre-consumer material, by weight, incorporated into the product.

Potable Water: Water suitable for drinking and supplied from wells or municipal water systems.

Rapidly Renewable Materials: Material considered to be an agricultural product, both fiber and animal, that takes ten years or less to grow or raise, and to harvest in an ongoing and sustainable fashion. Rapidly renewable materials include products made from bamboo, cotton, flax, jute, straw, sunflower seed hulls, vegetable oils, wheat, or wool.

Recycled Content: See Post-Consumer Recycled Content and Pre-Consumer Recycled Content.

Recycling: The collection, reprocessing, marketing, and use of materials that were diverted or recovered from the solid waste stream.

Reduce: A strategy to lessen or minimize material use or to use materials more efficiently.

Regionally Manufactured Materials: For purposes of this document, must be assembled as a finished product within a 500-mile radius of the project site. Assembly, as used for this definition, does not include on-site assembly, erection, or installation of finished components, as in structural steel, miscellaneous iron, or systems furniture.

Regionally Extracted, Harvested, or Recovered Materials: For purposes of this document, must have their source as a raw material from within a 500-mile radius of the project site.

Renewable Energy: Power derived from solar electric, wind, geothermal, biomass, or low-impact hydroelectric sources. See Center for Resource Solutions (CRS), Green-e (www.green-e.org) for a definition of renewable sources and product certification requirements.

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs): RECs are a representation of the environmental attributes of green power and are sold separately from the electrons that make up the electricity. RECs allow the purchase of green power even when the electrons are not purchased. Sometimes called "green tags" or "Tradable Renewable Certificates".

Reuse: A strategy to return materials to active use in the same or a related capacity.

Salvaged Materials: Construction materials recovered from existing buildings or construction sites and reused in other buildings. Common salvaged materials include structural beams and posts, flooring, doors, cabinetry, brick, and decorative items.

Sealant: Any material with adhesive properties that is formulated primarily to fill, seal, or waterproof gaps or joints between two surfaces. Sealants include sealant primers and caulks.

Solar Reflectance (Albedo): The ratio of the reflected solar energy to the incoming solar energy over wavelengths of approximately 0.3 to 2.5 micrometers. A reflectance of 100% means that all of the energy striking a reflecting surface is reflected back into the atmosphere and none of the energy is absorbed by the surface.

Solar Reflectance Index (SRI): A measure of a material's ability to reject solar heat, as shown by a small temperature rise. It is defined so that a standard black (reflectance 0.05, emittance 0.90) is 0 and a standard white (reflectance 0.80, emittance 0.90) is 100.

Stormwater Runoff: Water volumes that are created during precipitation events and flow over surfaces into sewer systems or receiving waters.

Sustainable Forestry: The practice of managing forest resources to meet the long-term forest product needs of humans while maintaining the biodiversity of forested landscapes. The primary goal is to restore, enhance, and sustain a full range of forest values, economic, social, and ecological.

Thermal Comfort: A condition of mind experienced by building occupants expressing satisfaction with the thermal environment.

Toxic Substance: A chemical or mixture that can cause illness, death, disease, or birth defects. The quantities and exposures necessary to cause these effects can vary widely. Many toxic substances are pollutants and contaminants in the environment.

Urea Formaldehyde: A combination of urea and formaldehyde that is used in some glues and may emit formaldehyde at room temperature.

Ventilation: The process of supplying air to or removing air from a space for the purpose of controlling air contaminant levels, humidity, or temperature within the space. (Source: ASHRAE 62.1-2004)

Visible Light Transmittance (Tvis): The ratio of total transmitted light to total incident light. In other words, it is the amount of visible spectrum (380 - 780 nanometers) light passing through a glazing surface divided by the amount of light striking the glazing surface. A higher Tvis value indicates that a greater amount of visible spectrum incident light is passing through the glazing.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Carbon compounds that participate in atmospheric photochemical reactions (excluding carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, metallic carbides and carbonates, and ammonium carbonate). The compounds vaporize (become a gas) at normal room temperatures.
