MINE NEWS with Steve Green

The Talison Lithium Expansion Project is progressing well with works continuing on piling.

The Mine Open Day provided an opportunity for members of our community to see the project first hand and to also view the mining machines and Chemical Grade Processing facility. See below for a current photo of the C3 pit.

The site bid a fond farewell to Bill Cornell in September. Bill has been a long time employee with 40 years of service to the Greenbushes Operations. We wish Bill and Bev all the best for the retirement and trust they will get out and enjoy some quality time and well earned recreation. Bill is pictured here at his farewell barbecue with Maintenance Coordinator-Infrastructure Matt Boyle.

We also extend a warm welcome to our new Manager Mining Matt Rowett who commenced his role in September.

Pat’s Patch...Cr Pat Scallan

The last of the meetings for this council has come and gone with a new council being

elected at the end of the month. Unfortunately there were no new hands put up for the North Ward so you will be stuck with me for another term. It will be good to get some new blood on council as fresh ideas and looking at things from a different perspective is always good. Have a think about putting your hand up next time around.

The Shire and a working party is very busy working through the sesquicentennial (150 years) celebration programme for Bridgetown next year so if you do have any ideas please let someone on the committee know or I can pass them through.

There has been a few issues with hoons in town lately and the only way for us as a town to get on top of it is to report them to the police. If you don’t want to get too involved please let me know the details and I am more than happy to follow up.

The police are very willing to do something about it but they can’t be here 24/7 so please let them know when something is happening or get me the details particularly the vehicle details and rego….. and driver if you can!

There are also a few motorbikes hooning up and down the town streets, some of the alley ways and also on some of the walk trails (some of which are signposted for walkers only) including the board walk at the pool.

The Greenie Pool has been developed by the locals in town and we don’t want it to be destroyed by irresponsible selfish individuals who expect the rest of the world to clean up and fix up after them!

Spring is here (occasionally) so its time again to think about your fire prevention and emergency plan…Is your property fire ready and are you and your family prepared to leave or fight the fire if one eventuates?

The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (previously Parks and Wildlife) is planning a prescribed burn of the bush block north of Greenbushes-Grimwade Road, east of the South Western Highway, south of DaRonch’s Road and west of North Greenbushes and the railway line this spring.

There are lots of activities happening in and around town over the next few months such as the Tour de Margaret River which finishes one of its stages in Greenbushes….we are supplying lunch for them and the support crew. Come and support by waving on the finishers…ring bells or just make a noise. There will be some Blues music at the finish, (which is at the hall), with market Stalls and food available. If you want to help please give me a call as volunteers are always needed.

Remembrance Day this year is going to be held on Friday 10

th November at 10:45am as we have the Tour de Margaret

River finishing their event on the 11th around that time.

GREENBUSHES PRIMARY SCHOOL

& COMMUNITY SHED Earlier this year the Greenbushes Primary School students, incorporated in their curriculum, the

design of a logo for our Greenbushes Community Shed. Students used their knowledge of logos, computer programs, art and design techniques to produce some very creative designs. Eventually, with some additional suggestions from our Shed Committee, the final design was decided upon. As a reward for their hard work the students were treated to an Inflatable Sports afternoon, sponsored by the CRC and a sausage sizzle, sponsored by the P & C. Students were able to experience inflatable hockey, twister and basket ball activities, all aimed at establishing team building, coordination and fitness, delivered in a safe environment for pri-mary school aged children. It has been a rewarding experience for the CRC to coordinate the development of these events, and watch the collabo-ration between groups in achieving a satisfying outcome for a new community group.

In 2015 The Greenbushes Community Resource Centre re-ceived grant funding through the South West Development Commission for the purpose of developing a software package to match seniors or those with disabilities, with local volun-teers, by helping them remain in their own homes for longer. By offering a low cost option for all the small jobs, which are often too difficult to complete without some form of help or assis-tance, our newly developed software package will help match those in need with those willing to contribute their time in help-ing with odd jobs. The software package is now complete, with both an on-line and off-line version, the system has been trialled, audited and is now ready to implement within our community. If you hold a senior or disability card and require help with small jobs around the home or garden, or if you are still active within our community and have time to volunteer, then please contact the CRC on 9764 3575 and your information will be added to our data base and skill sets matched with jobs which may need completing in the future. Volunteering is a satisfying and rewarding way of contributing to our society.

GROW GREENBUSHES NEWS

Leanne Green Chairperson Grow Greenbushes

Greg Duff, the Operations Manager at Auswest Timbers, gave this update to the September meeting of Grow Greenbushes: Consolidation of our operations onto the Greenbushes site has progressed well since the beginning of the year.

Greenbushes is our sole production site. We continue to also dispatch remaining product off our Pemberton and Manjimup sites.

Although domestic WA market conditions are challenging, we have been selling good volumes of timber into other states and overseas.

We have been working on noise management, and this has included design changes to some waste block conveyors and also walling in a part of our Greenmill.

Our current major project is the Large Log Line. This is essentially a second sawmill specifically designed to process bigger logs and produce high value big section products. Project construction is running on-time and to budget. Installation will be complete this month and commissioning will be occurring Sept/Oct.

We will ramp up capacity on this new line, and within several months our intent will be to transfer one of our existing shifts to the new line. This will mean dayshift only in the Greenmill (currently day and night shift Monday to Thursday).

As you might have seen in the local paper, we are seeking timber stackers and plant operators to help us fill current positions and those on the new line. If you have friends or family that are interested, please get them to come in and grab an application form! All applicants keen to work hard and be a reliable team member will be considered.

Greg has been invited to attend our November 2nd meeting in person to provide an update of the progress

of the Large Log Line commissioning.

Congratulations to the Tidy Town Com-mittee for being a finalist in the Environ-mental Sustainability category of the Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards.

To those people involved in the recent spate of vandalism around Greenbushes

A big thankyou to everyone who has contributed to keeping Greenbushes great!

Greenbushes Primary School hosted a fond farewell to long serving teacher Rose Fullston upon her retirement in September 2017. Rose spent many years teaching at Greenbushes and has inspired so many of our youngsters to think creatively and learn many skills which they will carry with them for life. The school community and other Greenbushes residents joined Rose for a farewell dinner at the Shamrock Hotel where people paid tribute to her dedication and commitment to Greenbushes and its future generations. Best wishes for your retirement Rose.

Our Spider workshop with Queensland honorary researcher and author Robert Whyte was a thrilling morning out for all ages. Robert is visiting the area as part of the Blooming Wild Festival to celebrate his newly released book 'A field

Guide to Spiders of Australia' with the CSIRO. The workshop was for all ages and Robert chatted to us about the making of his book, the important role of spiders in our ecosystems, common ones in our area, how to safely catch and identify spiders, and much more. Robert’s aim is to alleviate people’s fear of these fascinating creatures. The workshop was during school holidays on Wednesday October 4

th from 10am to 12pm

and attracted 35 participants. A small morning tea was provided and Robert’s book was for sale on the day.

We are organising a bus tour to Margaret River’s Fair Harvest property. Fair Harvest was established in 1995 and is a thriving permaculture farm. Their aim is to inspire and enable people to grow their own produce and be more sustainable. The Fair Harvest gardens have organic veggie gardens, fruit orchards, poultry, composting systems and more. Their café is only open for a few months of the year and we will be treated to a 2 course lunch with ingredients picked fresh from their garden, followed by a 1 hour guided tour of their property. The bus trip is planned for Thursday the 26

th

of October and will cost $30 per person for lunch. If you would like to come along please call Tracy asap to book your spot on the bus – 0400 976 434.

Coming up on November 4th is our 8

th Birthday

Celebrations. We’ll be having a family fun morning with birthday cake, seed bomb making, face painting, succulents in a pot workshop and more. Hope to see you there to help us celebrate. This is also the weekend our garden is participating in the Festival of Country Gardens Spring Open Garden Scheme.

We need your help. Our busy bees have become a little light on helpers. The garden is a wonderful new asset to our community and like all gardens it needs a certain level of maintenance to help it keep looking its best. If you’re happy to help out but can’t make it to the scheduled 3

GREENBUSHES BELLES NEWS

The Greenbushes Belles have been busy just lately. Several of our members attended the State Conference in July where we showed off our new Greenbushes Belles flag – proudly modelled by Didith. The conference was very rewarding and demonstrated the collective power of a group of women doing positive things for communities all over the state.

Our recent Chill ‘n’ Chat session on making kokedamas was very well attended and enjoyed by all. Stay tuned for more fun sessions coming up.

The Belles have some busy times coming up volunteering at the Bridgetown Blues and running cake stalls at Linga Longa and the Tour of Margaret River. Anyone who can help us out with providing ingredients, baking or assisting on the stalls would be very welcome. Please contact Ann on 0428 922 069. Donations of:

Flour – self raising or plain Sugar – white, brown or castor Eggs Butter Nuts and dried fruits Vanilla

will be put to very good use.

We are also having a “Girls Night In” for the Cancer Council on Friday 13

th October. Entry is by donation to the Cancer Council in

a sealed envelope. Contact Karen (0408 301 002) or see our Facebook page/posters for more information. Then a car boot sale fundraiser on November 4 – see the advertisement in this newsletter for more details. Stall holders are welcome, contact Ann on 0428 922 069. There will also be a sausage sizzle and $100 note fundraiser.

If you want to see more about what we are doing and the fun we have, follow our Facebook page – Greenbushes Belles CWA. Contact Karen Browne on 0408 301 002 if you would like to become a Belle.
