Greenbriar M.S. puts the spotlight on Asian Heritage

In December 2001, the Senate adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage

Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month.

Throughout May, students, staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities that

promote the understanding of the many contributions made by Asian Canadians.

Peel schools honour police officers during Police Appreciation Week

The Peel District School Board will pay tribute to police officers by holding Police Apprecia-

tion Week from May 10 to 16, 2015. Peel students and staff will show their appreciation for

the tremendous job being done by police to protect schools, homes and communities. Police

Appreciation Week coincides with National Police Week. National Police Week pays tribute

to the work of police officers across Canada.

"The Peel board appreciates the dedication and commitment of police officers who work to keep our schools and

communities safe," says Janet McDougald, Peel Board chair. "Police Appreciation Week is our way of thanking

officers who dedicate themselves to protecting our community. It's also a way to give these officers the special

recognition they deserve."

During this week, students, staff and parents in schools throughout Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will

honour the work of police officers and thank them for enhancing public safety and security.

NEPAL EARTHQUAKES

We are so thankful and

appreciative of your caring

attitude directed to the

children of Nepal.

are exposed to higher levels of ultraviolet (UV) rays. This exposure is a risk factor for developing skin cancer and cataracts later

in life. The UV index is the measure commonly used in Canada to assess the strength of the sun’s UV rays risk on a given day.

What is the UV Index? The index scale ranges from 0 to 10. The higher the value, the more intense ultraviolet rays. The UV

index is calculated daily by Environment Canada using ozone and weather information. It can vary from day to day with changes

in the ozone layer – the thinner the ozone layer, the higher the index reading.

How to protect your family from the sun? Wear a hat (preferably with a broad brim), sunglasses and protec-

tive clothing on sunny days. Use sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or greater whenever you're outdoors. Encourage your children to play in shady areas if they are outside for a long period of time. Remember that sunburn can occur

even on a cloudy day, as up to 80 per cent of UV rays can penetrate light clouds, and 40 per cent of UV rays can bounce back

from sand, water or concrete.

FROM THE LIBRARY

“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant, if we did not sometimes taste of adversity,

prosperity would not be so welcome.” Anne Bradstreet (1612-1672)

band performed at PMTA fest, a non-competitive music festival, and each group did a great

job. Congratulations on your performances!

Upcoming Events:

May 22 (Fri), 12:15pm Spirit Assembly: The Grade 6 Band will be performing!

June 10 (Wed), 7:00pm Coffee House: Come watch Greenbriar's talented stu-

dents sing, dance, play an instrument and more!

End of Year Reminder

If you rent from Cosmo Music, you should have received an email or a letter

giving you the renewal options. To keep your child's instrument over the summer break, you

must renew BEFORE June 21. Cosmo will be coming to pick up instruments on June 23.

If you have any questions about the renewal process please call Ms. Arbuthnot or Ms.

Kirschbaum.

Developing an understanding that reading is more than deciphering sound letter relationships, has been,

and will continue to be a focus of the Library program. Through the Red Maple and Silver Birch reading

program, students are being asked to re late and reflect upon their reading so as to develop a deeper

appreciation for the literary themes and issues.

We have just completed the Forest of Reading programme and voting. Our trip is planned for

May 21 at the Powerade Centre. It is encouraging that we have more students than ever both being able

to vote as well as wishing to go on the trip. Good job everyone! A special congratulations goes to the

students who completed all 10 books from either Fiction or Non Fiction. The final winning titles will be

broadcasted on that day.

Students and parents are reminded that the final due date for all library materials is Friday June 12th. All

students need to hand in their books and clear their accounts. If students have books checked out from

their previous Peel District School Board school, they are welcome to hand them in and they will be

couriered to the correct school. The costs for lost/damaged books are $10.00 for fiction and $20.00 for

non-fiction.

Keep your child safe around train tracks

Trains are often closer and are moving faster than most motorists and pedestrians perceive. That's why all

members of a family should be are aware of the importance of rail safety.

Safety steps for children

Playing on railway tracks and bridges is dangerous. Find safe, supervised and open areas

(e.g., neighbourhood parks) in which to have fun.

The only way to safely cross a rail track is to use designated railway crossings.

If you must cross railway tracks, for example on your way to and from school, stop, look and

listen before crossing.

It is against the law to trespass on railway property.

Safety steps for adults

Be prepared to stop at a highway/ railway crossing.

Listen for warning bells and whistles of an approaching train. Turn off, or turn down distracting

fans, heaters, music/radios.

Obey the signals. Never attempt to drive under a gate as it is closing or around a closed gate. If the

gate begins to close while you’re underneath, keep moving ahead until you clear the crossing.

If a police officer or a member of the train crew is directing traffic at the crossing, obey their

directions

If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, get out quickly and away from the vehicle and tracks.

Move in the direction that the train is approaching from to avoid being hit by debris. Your vehicle

will be swept forward by the momentum of the train.
