RecyclingConcrete tile roofs have such a long lifespan that

recycling is almost an added benefit. While other

roofing materials – particularly petroleum-based

and fossil-fuel dependent asphalt shingles – clog

landfills, our concrete tile’s longevity reduces the

need for reroofing. But when the time comes to

replace a tile roof, it’s helpful to remember that

concrete tiles are mineral-based, nontoxic, and

can be reused in manufacturing.

The Inherently Green Lifecycle of Tile

MonierLifetile uses naturally occurring raw materials

to manufacture our concrete roof tile – sand, cement

and water – to which pigment is added to provide a

rich palette of integral colors. In fact, concrete roof

tiles are comprised of more than 75 percent sand.

By comparison, other roofing products involve the

less environmentally friendly harvesting of trees or

the extraction of less abundant materials such as

slate, energy-intense metal, or fossil fuels for the

production of asphalt shingles.

Bulk raw materials used by MonierLifetile are

sourced close to our manufacturing plants in order

to minimize transportation emissions and pollutants,

as well as fuel consumption.

Concrete tile roofs utilize one of the simplest systems for

installation. Because each tile is individually attached, tile

is easy to repair or replace. Installation and maintenance

costs over time are lower than other roofing materials

because concrete tile is made to last for generations.

Our Energy Efficient Roof System greatly improves the

performance and energy savings for the life of the building

structure. Our ventilated, self-regulating system provides

the benefits of a cooler house in the summer and a warmer

house in the winter. As a result, energy costs are substantially

20 percent of the CO2 emitted during the manufacture of the

be recycled. By contrast, over 11 million tons of

asphalt shingle waste is generated annually in the

U.S. Reroofing jobs account for 10 million tons with

another 1 million from manufacturing scrap.***

construction projects.

• Concrete tiles produce less than half of the carbon

emissions of clay tiles and metal sheets.*

A 2007 survey of 250 builders estimated consumers are willing to pay 11–25 percent more for green built homes. Another study by McGraw Hill and NAHB found that 63 percent of consumers are motivated by lower operating and maintenance costs for green homes.

In San Jose, Pinn Brothers Fine Homes unveiled Orchard Heights, the first single-family subdivision to meet a new standard for green homes. Our tile finishes its lifecycle by returning to the Earth to be reused responsibly.
