Technological innovation by itself cannot produce the expected results while, when not correctly applied, can cause losses
arising on investments made by Farmers, thus decreasing the Economic Water Productivity Index and the overall
sustainability.
NEW TECHNOLOGIES ARE NOT A PANACEA

IRRINET is an Irrigation Scheduling expert system, developed by the CER implementing the results obtained in more than 50 years of research on plant/water relation and sustainable irrigation management.
The IRRINET project was supported and co-funded by the Emilia-Romagna Government with the aim to progressively reduce water use for irrigation.
IRRINET is among the tools provided to the farmers in the frame of Emilia-Romagna’s Rural Development Plan 2007-2013.
The IRRINET web service is freely available and provides irrigation advices for the main water demanding crops

IRRINET has evolved in IRRINET Plus which implement economic calculation of the benefit related to the next irrigation through a traffic light advisory system. Farmers are stimulated by the economic approach to maximise profit while reducing water overuse.
Irrinet results at a Glance
• Since 2009- More than 50 million m3 of blue water saved per year
• 2011- 2350 users registered to the service in addition to more than 9000 farmers served through the Water Reclamation Consortia, with a share of about 23% of the irrigated area in the Emilia-Romagna region
