Heavy overnight rain result- ed in a severe dip in temper- atures and when combined with a strong wind it came as no surprise that bites were much harder to come by than they had been in earlier prac- tise sessions. Not that this maered too much because the goal for every competitor on Satur- day was simply to win his or her section and claim a place in the final where £3,000 worth of Daiwa sponsored prizes will be on offer. In to- tal, the value of prizes and cash going up for grabs over the three matches is worth a staggering £5,500. Is there any wonder our Club Match Angler Championship gets more popular by the year? Tactically it was a sim- ple match and all the lead- ing weights fell to exactly the same technique, presenting a feeder at relatively close range. Most loaded their feeders with micro pellets and then it was down to hook bait choice. Maggot worked well but the better F1 carp tended to fall to banded hard pellets. Championship regular Steve Holberry led the way with a net of mostly F1 carp taken on 4mm pellet feed- ing micros through a scoop feeder fished at around 16 metres. Then Hill sent Houghton racing away but his lob was off target before Joker again went close twice, Conway having a fierce shot deflected wide and, from the corner, his flashing header was bril- liantly kept out by Brunt. AFP had improved this half but a key moment proved to be the introduc- tion of sub Chris Esberger. Within minutes of going on he was sent clear to slip the ball past Bailey to give AFP a 67th minute lead and in the next minute, he was on hand near the line to turn in Ben Thornton’s low cross. And it was 4-1 after Es- berger’s through ball sent in Ben Thornton on 75 minutes. An amazing dipping vol- ley from 35 yards from Andy Baersby - which would have been a goal of the Season con- tender at NYS - came back off the AFP bar before Conway was rewarded for his toil for Joker with a well-taken vol- ley from a Battersby free- kick. AFP: Brunt; Cuckson, Wes- ley, Jones, McDonald; Dark- er, Lund (Smith 64), Barnett; Thornton, Hopewell (Esberger 62), McDonnell (Williams 77). Unused: Hibbert, Flint. Joker: Bailey; Warren, Swailes. Clayton, Fawcus; Bat- tersby, Haigh, Hill; Houghton, Conway, Maxfield. Unused: Aus- tin, Forster. Referee: David Heap (Rotherham). nThe final was named the Bri- an Beeley Cup in memory of the late league president who was one of the league founders in 1966 and worked tirelessly for it. A silence was observed and the awards were present- ed by his daughter, Mrs Helen Richards. n The final of the league’s George Stainrod Trophy at the New York Stadium saw Pewter Pot beat Wilton Ath- letic 6-1. AFP ............. 4 Joker ........... 2 Serial winners AFP put their name back on the Rother- ham Sunday League Cup whilst holders Joker, serial runners-up this season, lost the grip they’d had on the trophy for three seasons. AFP’s win at the New York Stadium was their first in the competition since 2011 and added to their recently ac- quired Sunday League Pre- mier Division title which they won for a record sixth successive time. It was Joker’s third cup final defeat in a week at the stadium having lost to AFP in the Rotherham Associa- tion Cup Final and then to Mexborough’s Memories in the Rotherham Charity Cup. They also finished runners- up again in the league. But they were in front here until right on half-time and there was nothing be- tween them - and Joker had had the beer chances and probably shaded it - until two goals in a minute mid- way through the second half, turned it AFP’s way. Joker’s Dean Conway hit a post from a great chance in the third minute and they deserved their 20th minute lead, Conway’s low cross be- ing fired home at the far post by Adam Houghton. A fine save by AFP’s Ben Brunt prevented Lee Hill in- creasing the lead but AFP, despite a below par first half, showed their resilience by geing a 44th minute equal- iser through Steve McDon- nell after good work by Haydn Barne. Paul Mor- gan and Jenny Wilby won 21-16 in their first round tie but lost by the same score in the second round. Steve and Bev Shannon won 21-13, and then lost 21-11. Terry Hill and Sarah Fox met the same fate winning 21-16 then los- ing 21-12 albeit to t mixed pairs tournament winners Mel Evans and Lynn Pritcha. nRyan Clark appeared to be tak- ing all before him on the finals day of the Allens Green open singles competition in Radcliffe as he beat Manchester County players Jack Hargreaves 21-10 and Gareth Gwilliam 21-15, be- fore seeing off Poeries bowler Gary Owen 21-16 in his semi-fi- nal. Jimmy Derby reached the final even more easily, winning 21-10, 21-12 and 21-6, but Ryan looked in control at 17-12 only for Derby to post a nine break to win 21-17. n An extremely young South Yorkshire junior away team fail- ing to muster a single winning card against the strong War- wickshire outfit in the county championship in a 252-100 de- feat. The home side playing at Mosborough MW, performed admirably however, winning five of the 12 games and leading with the last three jacks on the green, only to eventually lose 216-186. The organ- iser asked the players if they wished to proceed and some- one said “We may have a beer chance of beating Gary Ellis with the green in this condition.” Well so much for that theory as wins of 21-4, 21-5 and 21-3 proved that the ‘Silver Fox can cob them as well as bowl them. Gareth Gwil- liam was the other qualifier on the night. Nick White from High Green won the Yorkshire Mer- it five years ago on the Elland green and revisited the site of his triumph last Sunday win- ning three games to make finals day. Nick beat Scott Tattersley 21-8 in the third round.
