A READING FROM THE BOOK OF CONCORD

APOLOGY OF THE AUGSBURG CONFESSIONARTICLE XIIA: REPENTANCESEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Condensed from CONCORDIA: THE LUTHERAN CONFESSIONS, copyright

2005,2006 by Concordia Publishing House. Used by permission. All rights reserved. Topurchase a copy of CONCORDIA, call 800-325-3040.

Faith is conceived and strengthened through Absolution, through the hearing of the Gospel, through the use of the Sac-raments, so that it may not give in to the terrors of sin and

death. This method of repentance is plain and clear. It in-

creases the worth of the Power of the Keys and of the Sacra-

ments. It illumines Christ's benefit and teaches us to make useof Christ as Mediator and the Atoning Sacrifice.

Christ says, "Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden,

and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28). Here there are two

parts. The "labor" and the burden signify the contrition, anxi-ety, and terrors of sin and death. To "come to" Christ is to be-

lieve that sins are forgiven for Christ's sake. When we believe,

our hearts are brought to life by the Holy Spirit throughChrist's Word. Here, therefore, are these two chief parts: con-trition and faith. In Mark 1:15, Christ says, "Repent and be-

lieve in the gospel." In the first clause He convicts of sins, and

in the second He comforts us and shows the forgiveness of sins. Believing the Gospel is in the proper sense is believingthat the forgiveness of sins has been granted for Christ's sake.

This is revealed in the Gospel. Here the two parts are joined:contrition when sins are rebuked; and faith when it is said,"Believe in the gospel." For this satisfies us, that contrition and

faith are named as the chief parts. (paragraphs 42-45)

can be given Him. But giving the glory to God means to believe

Him, to consider Him truthful, wise, just, merciful, omnipotent, in

short, to acknowledge Him to be the Author and giver of every-

thing good.”

Daily Prayers:

Sunday: For the 100 coaches who are already serving at congrega-tions holding their initial weekend consultations. The coaches also con-duct monthly coaching sessions with each congregation’s pastor andquarterly visits with the congregation’s leadership for at least one yearafter the initial consultation.

Monday:  For more candidates to serve in the coaching role to be re-vealed to districts and TCN, so that even more churches can be trans-formed through the ministry of TCN.

Tuesday:  For Rev. Dr. Terry Tieman, TCN’s executive director, ashe guides the Board of Directors in their efforts to transform LCMS

congregations. Terry became the full-time executive director in January2009.

Wednesday:  For the other leaders serving on TCN’s Board of Direc-tors: Rev. David Born, Darwin Melnyk, Rev. Dr. Bob Newton, andRev. Dr. Dwight Marable. Ask the Holy Spirit to grant them continuedpassion and wisdom in their leadership.

Thursday:  With thanksgiving for the 275 congregations that are cur-rently undergoing the revitalization process. These congregations areactively working, by the grace and power of God, to move from beinginwardly focused to outwardly focusing on how they can impact their

communities with the Gospel.

Friday:  For the lay leaders and other members of these congregationsin the revitalization process. May the Holy Spirit work in their hearts tobegin shifting their focus as a church towards those who do not yetknow Jesus as their Savior.

Saturday:  For the pastors in the congregations currently in the TCNprocess—that their monthly coaching sessions would be encouragingand insightful.
