Light up the green road towards sustainable futurePhilips Green Road lighting solutions
Sustainable developmentAir pollution, unpredictable weather and the increasing severity of natural disasters in recent
years, have led to an increased awareness on the importance of environmental protection
and sustainable development.
The primary task of administrators and representatives of city government is to create
beautiful and livable environments for residents. They need to create cities that are safe and
comfortable to live and work in, while being responsible towards the planet, and answerable
to future generations.
Innovation
Today, there are 1.3 billion people living in the cities of Asia. Every year there is 34% growth
in total population and 85% urbanization growth. Very soon, Asia will reach 2 billion city
inhabitants.
This unprecedented pace of development and human population density necessitates that
the development of cities in Asia do not fully trace the progression that developing cities
in the West have taken. Instead, Asian cities need to leap-frog ahead, to seek development
paths that are better suited to Asia, in order to establish fresh new cities that each have their
own strong sense of individuality. In the transformation towards modernism, innovations and
new ideas are essential catalysts.
How can we ensure the development of modern cities that are safe, comfortable,
stable, prosperous and yet sustainable? This current issue is one that is both complex
and challenging. Consolidated efforts are required alongside innovation, exploring
new paradigms and executed at a new pace. Philips strives to create a greener
future for our cities, using our advanced technology and environmental know-how.
As a global leader in the lighting industry, Philips strives to harness new technology and advanced
methodology, to create solutions for illuminating the streets of developing cities in a sustainable
manner. Our solutions can save up to 44% in terms of energy consumption, and reduce the carbon
dioxide emissions while ensuring that roads are safe and comfortably illuminated. Philips is firmly
focused on the future. By providing products that have an extended lifespan, we can help create
greener living environments in the cities, further enhancing the quality of life while safeguarding our
future through sustainable development.

Sustainable development means that we not only have to be responsible for our actions taken today, but that these actions should also take into account the impact on the future. By using advanced technology to ensure that lighting systems used on the roads are reliable and have an extended lifespan, this effectively cuts down maintenance time and expenditure, reducing the resource burden on society.
As the global leader in the lighting Industry, Philips is firmly focused on the future. With the increasing efficiency of LED technology, and the continuous decrease in production costs, the use of LEDs in street lighting could rival adoption rates seen in the mobile handset and computer hardware industries. How can we make use of what is being invested today, to secure benefits from future developments in LED technology? Philips has pioneered a modular design for their LED products so that future upgrades can be made easily, without the need to discard or replace the entire lighting system.
The amount of carbon dioxide emitted by present day coal power plants is 581g per kWh of electrical energy generated. To effectively reduce carbon dioxide emissions and minimise the greenhouse effect, we must look beyond alternative sources of green energy and address the issue from the standpoint of energy demand by increasing the efficiency of energy usage, and apply strategies that optimise energy usage.
At present, 19% of global energy resources are used by lighting applications. If the use of lighting equipment could be reduced globally, we could save on 1.0843 trillion kWh of electricity in one year (approximately 120 billion Euros in expenditure). Carbon dioxide emissions could also be reduced by 630 million tons (equivalent to one-fifth of China’s carbon dioxide emissions and one-ninth of US carbon dioxide emissions.)
Other important strategies to help protect the environment include reducing the use of hazardous substances such as lead, and mercury in the manufacture of lighting products. Increasing the lifespan and reducing physical size of products can also reduce the amount of waste and pollution generated.
Energy efficient, reduces emissions, and supports sustainable development.
The primary objective of road lighting is to ensure safe passage for vehicles and pedestrians. This is something that cannot be taken lightly. It is a basic necessity. Therefore, all countries have strict safety regulations that govern factors such as Luminance, uniformity, disability glare and so on. There are specific requirements governing each of these parameters. The primary responsibility of lighting systems is to ensure compliance with these requirements, and to be effective in minimizing traffic accidents.
Today, a quality urban street requires more than these basic safety norms, it demands the natural, bright, and comfortable street lighting to create an environment that is even more enchanting than it is in the daytime - a natural urban night scene mingled with city, people, light.
Safe and comfortable, enhancing quality of life.

LEDs have become an increasingly pervasive form of lighting today: from handsets, to computers and roads. The speed at which this development is occurring is unprecedented. Experts unanimously believe that the next generation of street lighting will inevitably be based on breakthroughs in LED technology. However, as a relatively new technology, there remains a lot of research that needs to be done, and many questions that need to be answered, in order to optimize its usage in lighting applications.
Question 1: How will innovations in LED technology lead to the “greening” of road lighting?Answer: The use of LED technology for road lighting has tremendous potential in terms of its efficacy, reliability, and ability to integrate into intelligent control systems. Compared to existing solutions for street lighting, LEDs are more energy eff icient, create less light pollution, and are better for the environment. Hence, road lighting solutions based on LED technology will become the “greenest” way to illuminate roads.
Question 2: What is the current state and limitations of using LED technology specifically for road lighting? Answer: Road lighting is a very niche application domain. Specialised know-how should be used in conjunction with LED technology to ensure complete success in deployment. Due to limitations in terms of luminosity and cost, there are currently bottlenecks when using LEDs in systems designed for road lighting. This means that some LED lights may not be able to fully comply with road safety regulatory standards or deliver satisfactory energy savings, and hence cannot be ubiquitously used road lighting applications.
Question 3: Which type of LED road lighting system are the most energy efficient? Are LEDs that have the highest luminous efficacy also the most energy efficient?Answer: Not necessarily. There are three steps in transforming electrical energy into the light that actually hits the surface of the roads.• Electrical energy used to light up individual LEDs (LED luminous efficiency).• The amount of light that comes out of luminaires is the system luminous efficiency.• The amount of light that comes out of luminaires distribute to certain space on the road (utilisation factor).
Therefore, in order to determine the energy efficiency of LEDs, all of the above factors need to be taken into consideration. Measuring the illumination on each unit of road surface (LPD) is the most reasonable method of evaluating the energy efficiency.

Illumination level of the road is too low, affecting visibility. Unable to comply with required safety standards.
The need for more LEDs results in higher energy usage
Illumination is uneven on the road surface. Does not comply with required safety standards.
In order to achieve surface uniformity that meet safety standards, an increased number of poles are needed, resulting in higher energy consumption.
Appropriate level of illumination that is even, with glare control. Completely complies with the required safety standards.
Using the least number of LED luminaire and poles to achieve the most impact in reducing energy consumption.
