Green Revolution:

The green revolution is the significantincrease in agricultural productivity

resulting from the introduction of high -

yield varieties of grains , use ofpesticides , and improved management

techniques.

In 1965 the present government of

Mrs . Indira Gandhi decided to take amajor step on present Agriculture

condition .

Thus "Green Revolution" was applied tothe period from 1967 to 1978 basically in

parts ofPunjab andHaryana .

At this stage the Green Revolution was

concern only with Wheat & Rice .

Dr.M S Swaminathanfrom India led theGreen Revolution asthe Project Director.

&Dr. Norman Borlaug

from Mexicosupported the GreenRevolution throughthe introduction ofhigh yielding varietyof wheat seeds.

The Green Revolution resulted in arecord grain output of 131 million tonsin 1978-79.

This established India as one of theworld's biggest agricultural producers.

No other country in the world, whichattempted the Green Revolutionrecorded such level of success.

The increase in irrigation createdneed of new dams to harnessmonsoon water.

This in turn boosted industrialgrowth, created jobs and improvedthe quality of life of the people

India paid back all loans taken fromthe World Bank for the purpose ofthe Green Revolution.

By the creation of lateral facilitiessuch as factories and hydro-electric

The Green Revolution, howsoever

impressive, but NOT succeeded inmaking India totally and

permanently self-sufficient in food.

In terms of crops, it remains largelyconfined to foodgrains only.

Only Punjab and Haryana statesshowed best results of GreenRevolution.

The new farming techniques, has given birthto the serious pollution of drinking water causing

cancer and other diseases.

A recent Punjabi University study found

a high rate of genetic damage amongfarmers, which was attributed topesticide use.

The new organic farmers cite, fertilizer,and pesticides, and chemical used areruining the soil.
