Case-StudyMO Cases -Suitcases made of vulcanised fibreCompany: MO Cases UG & Co. KG Website: www.mo-cases.com

In our mission to create a suitcase that lasts a lifetime, we uncovered a “new” material with old roots: Vulcanised Fibre (VF), a 150-year-old natural material. Composed only of cellulose and sourced from industry leftovers and wood, VF is both recyclable and compostable. It’s lighter than aluminium, tougher than most thermoplastics and ages beautifully. A new 3D-printing method allows us to shape the material in inventive ways. We believe that the implications of this innovative material extend far beyond our suitcase, and hopefully inspires the creation of many new, sustainable products in the years to come. Germany

Case StudySpray the cup - Cup-saving water dispenserDesigners: Soroush Vahidian Kamyar & Navid Vahidian Kamyar Website: http://www.coroflot.com/Vdesign

Disposable cups add up. Spray the cup enables multiple uses of the same cup. After someone uses a cup, they need simply return it to the dispenser. The next user presses the “spray” button to initiate a nano-coating process. The spray nozzles are directed at both the inside and outside of the cup, creating a 5-micron-thick layer of protection. This prevents the transfer of bacteria and germs from one user to the next. This cycle can be repeated up to 200 times, resulting in 15 times less plastic cup consumption.

ProductWooden ebike -Natural and sustainable wooden electrical bicycleCompany: aceteam Berlin Design/Designer: Matthias Broda Website:www.aceteam.de

The wooden ebike is an ambitious project from aceteam GmbH to create an electrical bicycle using environmentally-friendly manufacturing processes. In cooperation with faculty from the Wood Science and Technology department of Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE), they‘ve developed the first wooden ebike for production. In addition to being a natural material, wood also retains CO2, whereas metal production requires eight times more energy input, leading to increased CO2 emissions. As a result, the wooden ebike has a significantly lower carbon footprint than a standard bicycle. The wooden ebike‘s distinctive appearance is characterised by its wooden “fork” and eye-catching frame, which resembles the human eye. The first wooden ebike prototype debuted in 2014 to critical acclaim. It was nominated for the renowned iF product design award, among others, and was the recipient of this year’s Green Buddy Award for innovation. aceteam Berlin plans to introduce the wooden ebike to the marketplace in July 2015.

ProductCITRUS ConceptThree-wheel foldable kick-scooterProducer/Brand/Company: prototype (without licensee) Design/Designer: Peter Opsvik Website: www.opsvik.no

CITRUS is a three-wheel foldable kick-scooter that accompanies the user throughout the day, as it easily transforms from scooter to trolley cart. The product can be brought onto busses and trains, into shops or workplaces. It may also be fitted with a small motor. Challenged by the problems of urban transport and influenced by close interaction with public transportation, designer Peter Opsvik developed this smart, intermodal transport concept. CITRUS offers its user independence in navigating city traffic as a tri-scooter and transforms into a compact trolley cart via a one-grip movement. An electric drive works in combination with kick scooter functionality, offering a handy means of transportation that can be used by anyone, anywhere. As a trolley cart, CITRUS is allowed in indoor environments and therefore facilitates “Room-To-Room“ mobility. Since it can be brought into offices, restaurants, trains and other spaces, the user need not worry about parking or theft.

ProductArtichair -Biodegradable dining chair made of cardoon thistle and seedsCompany: Schaffenburg Design: Spyros Kizis Website: http://www.spyroskizis.com/

The cardoon, also known as the artichoke thistle, is a thistle-like plant native to the western and central Mediterranean region, where it was domesticated in ancient times. With this project, we‘ve developed a new, 100%-biodegradable eco-material and explored possible applications for it within product design. A lounge chair and dining chair were designed to demonstrate the potential of the material for use within the furniture industry. Since the material biodegrades upon disposal, and cardoon seeds compose part of its makeup, it‘s possible that a new cardoon plant will one day grow wherever the products are buried at the end of their useful life.
