Finding Green Products
I work in an office;
there are no
green products
that I can buy
The products we’ve
always used
work just fine!
Why change?
Our focus is our mission.
Buying green is just not a priority
Why Buy Green?
• It is required by law!
• Helps Fort Buchanan reach its goals
• Uses products that are healthier for the workforce
• Saves energy and natural resources
• Promotes recycling programs and US agriculture
• Reduces disposal costs and hazards
• Saves money
“Fort Buchanan is committed to
the prevention of pollution and
greenhouse gas reduction,
promoting resource conservation
through waste stream reduction,
recycling, hazardous materials
substitution, water and energy
conservation.”

Fort Buchanan Objective and Targets –
Hazardous Material Management
Environmental Management
Action Plan #6:
Objective: Reduce purchase,
usage, and disposal of Hazardous
Materials (HMs)
Target 1: Increase number of
“Green Products” that replace HMs
Target 2: Reduce purchases of HMs
To reduce purchases of Hazardous Materials
REVIEW THE SAFETY DATA SHEET (SDS)
BEFORE BUYING ANY PRODUCT TO
IDENTIFY ANY HAZARDS
• SDS is a widely used system for cataloging
information on chemicals, chemical
compounds, and chemical mixtures.
• Includes instructions for the safe use and
potential hazards associated with a particular
material or product.
• These data sheets can be found anywhere
where chemicals are being used, and should
be provided with any delivery of chemical
product
What is My Role at Fort Buchanan?
Take GP training annually Determine if the products I request/purchase have been designated for preferred procurementLook for “green indicators” in stores or on-line, and purchase those productsDocument when I don’t (or can’t) buy recycled or biobased products, when above the micropurchase thresholdReview Safety Data Sheets for hazardous properties

products available to me?
USDA’s BioPreferred Program
Biobased products use biological products or renewable domestic agricultural (plant, animal, and marine) or forestry materials
The Farm Bill (May 2002) made Federal agency purchase of biobased products mandatory
Examples of biobased products: Plant fiber compostable cafeteria containers
Corn-based plastic cutlery
Citrus-based laundry detergent
Soy polyurethane floor stripper
Carpet made of sea grass/jute/hemp
Benefits of Biobased Products
Provide renewable raw materials for a broad range of nonfood and nonfeed products
Provide new and expanded markets for agricultural feedstocks
Reduce U.S. dependence on petroleum and other imports
Introduce products that are friendlier to the environment than their petroleum-based counterparts
Foster rural and sustainable development
Soybean powered Agricultural
Research Service tour bus
Examples of Designated Items under the BioPreferred Program
Lip care products
Hydraulic fluids
Biodegradable cutlery
Glass cleaners
Greases
Dust suppressants
Carpets
Carpet and upholstery cleaners
Parts wash solutions

Adhesive and mastic removers
Hand cleaners/sanitizers
Biodegradable containers
Fertilizers
Sorbents
Graffiti and grease removers
Laundry products
Bathroom and spa cleaners
De-icers
Do you know?Which of these is an example of a biobased product?
a. Soy-based roof coating
b. Non-ozone-depleting aerosol
c. 50% post-consumer recycled paper
d. Chlorine-free industrial wipes
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing
EPP is the procurement of products or services having a lesser effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services
Examples: products that are less toxic (contain less of things like cadmium, lead and mercury), are durable or repairable, or contain less packaging
Low VOC paint
Environmentally
preferable products
are available in the
supply system!
Cleaners
Sorbents
Degreasers
Paints
Energy Efficient Products
Purchase devices with minimal standby power –at or below one watt where availableSelect ENERGY STAR® and other energy efficient products when purchasing or contracting for energy-consuming products
ReviewWhich of the following is NOT an element of Green Procurement?
Environmentally Preferable
Biobased
Recovered Materials
Double-sided copying
Energy Efficient
Which have designated products?
Green Products in the Office
Copy Paper – Recycled Content
Fax Machine – Energy Star
File Folders – Recycled Content
Plastic Binders – Recycled Content
Fire extinguisher – SNAP (ozone alternatives)
Carpet – Recycled Content or Biobased
Light fixtures – Energy Star
Trash cans – Recycled Content
Green Products in the Shop
Greases – Biobased
Fuels – Biobased
Tires – Retreads (Recycled)
Fuel Additives – Biobased
Engine Coolant – Reclaimed (Recycled)
Hydraulic Fluid – Recycled or Biobased
Lubricating Oils – Re-refined or Biobased
Engine Parts – Rebuilt (Recycled)
Where Can Green Products Be Found?
Government Supply Sources
General Services Administration (GSA)
Defense Logistics Agency (DLA)
Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS)
Your Onpost Supply Store
JWOD (Javits-Wagner-O’Day Act)/AbilityOne
Off-Post Commercial Vendors

How do I know a product is Green?
• Icons/Symbols

products are
identified
with the
green leaf
Look For Specifics “Contains 50% Post-Consumer fiber” has more
meaning than “made with recycled products”
Trust Certifications that are Reputable EcoLogo, Chlorine Free Products Association (CFPA),
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Green Guard, Green Seal, Design for the Environment
Beware of Advertising Ploys – they might say “Green” but read the label “Environmentally friendly” “Green” Symbols depicting the earth or trees Unexplained recycling logos
What’s On The Label?
Why Should I Care –Is Anyone Tracking This?
Army/DOD reports green purchases annually from:
• Contract Action Report (CAR)
• Federal supply sources
EPA/States conduct compliance inspections and may issue violations
Fort Buchanan has EMS goals and tracks progress
The Army conducts internal and external compliance audits that cover GP
Army IG inspections are authorized to cover GP
Our supply sergeant is buying
some biobased lubricants
and cleaners for the shop. They
work just as well as the old stuff.
We now use 30% recycled
content paper and it works
great! We found lots of other
recycled items in the catalog
We’ve switched to a
water-based parts cleaner.
Now I don’t worry as much
about health effects.
Final Review
Which is NOT a symbol used to identify a green product?
a. Green leaf
b. Green check mark
c. Green hornet
d. Green tree
GSA
DLA
Green Seal
What Should You Do?
Keep the lists of CPG and BioPreferred items handy – refer to them when you buy www.epa.gov/cpg www.biopreferred.gov
Maximize your purchases of green products Look for “green indicators” at store or online Request them from your vendors Review Safety Data Sheets for hazard information
Document when you can’t buy recycled or biobased products -- for reasons of Price, Performance, or Availability(when the purchase is above the micropurchase amount)
