TIME OR MONEY?

Time:If You Answered Time, ask yourself two morequestions. First, what is my time budget? What amount oftime do I have to give per week, and per day. I have _____ hours per week. The best days for me to volunteer are ______. The best times for me to volunteer are ______. Mark on your calendar the days that are best foryou. Those are the days to fill up first. Mark "The Last Weekend," November 3-4, onyour calendar. That weekend is critical for"Getting Out the Vote" (GOTV). Studies showthat personal outreach in the last four daysbefore an election are the most effective inturning out voters. So keep that weekend free.

Now look at your calendar to see what eventsyou already have scheduled that lendthemselves well to political activism. Forexample, coffee with my friend Jessica (alsovery politically motivated) becomes canvassing.(With a stroller!) Now look at your regular calendar to find thosehidden bits of time that you normally can't findmuch to fill. You know what I mean - theminutes you sit in your car in school pickup line,the empty space during the kiddo's practice orgame, or even while you're getting your hairdone. For me, it's waiting for my son to befinished with an appointment that becomesprime time to write. You get the drift. Okay, now that you know what time you haveto work with, ask the second question...

Turnout Challenge: Studies have shown thatthe most effective way to get people to vote issocial pressure. When people know theirneighbors will find out if they voted, turnoutincreases by around 8%. I'm not encouraging you to tell your neighborsthat you will be checking into whether theyvoted. (Although you could). What I am encouraging you to do is to use thepopup groups that you're part of to ensureDemocratic turnout from the groups you belongto is 100%. How do you do that? By telling yourmembers that you're taking the TurnoutChallenge and you're aiming for 100% turnout inyour group. Let them - and all members - knowthat you'll be checking voting records after theelection (which only shows whether you'vevoted - not what candidates you vote for) andyou'll be noting who didn't vote. Do the same forany Democratic organizations that you're partof. Let's make sure OUR base gets out there.

Friend/Contact Mapping: Canvassing - goingdoor to door to tell people about candidates orissues - is very effective. But reaching out toyour own friends/contacts is even more so. Right now, take 10-15 minutes to make a list offriends and people that you know who might notbe planning to vote. (I'd encourage you to reachout to as many women in your networks aspossible.) Who do you send holiday cards to?Who do you talk to at the dog park? What familymembers "space out" and sometimes forget tovote? Who in your network is most impacted byhealthcare, or income inequality - or any otherissue that's on this year's ballot? Write theirnames down! Now, contact them by phone, e-mail or text. Don't just "encourage them to vote." First, askthem specific questions that help them thinkthrough their own voting plan. Questions like"are you going to vote before or after work? Isyour polling place closer to your house or youroffice? Is there parking or are you taking publictransportation?" require people to think throughthe process of voting, and are shown to bemuch more effective than simply askingsomeone the yes-or-no question of "are yougoing to vote?"

A Chipotle? Did you know that a five dollar donation isenough to buy TWO yard signs? Think of howmany people see those signs, and what kind ofan impact your $5 is making in ensuring peopleknow about that nominee. Every single dollarmatters, so never ever feel like yourcontribution isn't enough. Write down what you plan to spend. "I have_____ to contribute to campaigns andorganizations in the next 30 days."

Plan to contribute anything you're going tocontribute to a candidate as soon aspossible- campaigns need to know themoney is there before they can spend it, sogive them time to use your donation!
